Terrible news from the Tour of Austria today, where Norwegian cyclist André Drege, 25, was involved in a fatal crash descending in stage four, the queen stage of the race.

The race organizers posted, “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we have to announce the passing of André Drege. On Saturday 6th July following a very serious crash during the descent of the Großglockner at stage 4 of the Tour of Austria, André crashed and sustained severe injuries.”

Drege’s team posted, “Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with André’s family and loved ones and his team Coop-Repsol, during this incredibly difficult time.”

Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) won the stage but podiums and presentations were canceled due to the crash.

Drege had enjoyed a successful start to the season on the road, having already won seven races. He was part of the UCI Continental team Team Coop–Repsol, and was in the works to ride for WorldTour team Jayco-Alula next year.

This year the young rider had ​​taken the overall win at the Visit South Aegean Islands race, and won stages 1 and 2 there. He also took the overall win at the International Tour of Rhodes.

The cycling world has already started paying tribute to the up and coming star. Lidl-Trek posted to social media, “Heartbreaking news from Tour of Austria today. We are sending all our love and strength to the friends, family and @TeamCoopRepsol teammates of André Drege.”

Movistar posted, “Keeping everybody within @TeamCoopRepsol and André Drege’s loved ones in our thoughts after a horrible tragedy at the Tour of Austria today. Big hugs from everyone here. Stay strong.

EF Education-EasyPost said, “A loss felt in the entire cycling community. Our thoughts are with the friends, family and teammates of André Drege. Rest in peace, André.”

And Belgian team Intermarché–Wanty posted, “We are heartbroken to learn the passing of our fellow colleague cyclist André Drege, who had a wonderful career ahead of him. We send our sincere condolences to his family and his team.”

The race officials have yet to announce whether or not the final stage will take place on Sunday.
