In May, unemployment rates were lower in 4 states, higher in 3 states, and stable in 43 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 7 states and the District and was essentially unchanged in 43 states.

May jobless rates up over the year in 269 of 389 metro areas; payroll jobs up in 44

Jobless rates were higher in May than a year earlier in 269 of the 389 metropolitan areas, lower in 83, and unchanged in 37. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 44 metropolitan areas, decreased in 1, and was essentially unchanged in 344.

In 2023, annual average unemployment rates decreased in 6 states, increased in 2, and were little changed in 42 states and the District of Columbia. Employment-population ratios increased in 10 states and were little changed in 40 states and the District.
