Player Outlook
Kyle Hendricks got a delayed start to his 2023 campaign due to a shoulder strain he sustained in July of the previous season. The veteran debuted in May and ended up tossing 137 innings across 24 starts. He ultimately posted a 3.74 ERA, which was a step down from his 3.48 career mark but a step forward from the 4.80 ERA he recorded in 2022. Per usual, Hendricks continued to pitch to contact, as he recorded only 93 strikeouts across those 137 innings. The righty has now posted a K/9 below 8.0 in each of the last seven seasons. While Hendricks can make that work to some degree in real life, it does limit his fantasy upside. Heading into his age-34 season, Hendricks should once again be a key cog in Chicago's rotation, likely slotting in behind Justin Steele and possibly Jameson Taillon. Hendricks figures to be fairly consistent if he stays healthy and can provide some value to fantasy managers in the right matchups, though keep expectations in check due to his advancing age and low strikeout totals.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Starting Tuesday

Hendricks will start Tuesday's game against the Pirates, Kyle Williams of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Hendricks looked to be destined to head to the bullpen due to the return of Jordan Wicks. However, Justin Steele was scratched due to elbow soreness, pushing Hendricks into spot start duty Tuesday. He served up six earned runs across only 1.2 innings in a start Wednesday against Pittsburgh, though he had been more effective in immediately preceding outings.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Roughed up in no-decision

Hendricks escaped with a no-decision in Wednesday's win against the Pirates, allowing six earned runs on eight hits and three walks in 1.2 innings. He struck out two. Hendricks never found his footing in this one, surrendering a solo home run to Bryan Reynolds in the opening frame before completely unraveling in the second, yielding five additional runs on three extra-base hits before mercifully being pulled with two runners on and two out in the inning. Fortunately for Hendricks, those two runners were stranded and the Cubs rallied to a 14-10 victory, keeping Hendricks' record at 3-10. The 34-year-old veteran has been a shell of his former self this season, registering an ugly 6.75 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 6.0 K/9 in 102.2 innings. Hendricks' next start is slated to be a rematch with Pittsburgh early next week.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Fans five in loss

Hendricks (3-10) took the loss Monday against Minnesota, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out five. Despite reaching double-digit losses for the third time in his 11-year career, the veteran right-hander posted his third quality start of the season in this 93-pitch outing. Hendricks handcuffed the Twins lineup and tallied five or more punchouts for the fourth time in 2024. Overall, the 34-year-old has pitched to a 6.60 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 65:27 K:BB across 91.1 innings. His next time on the mound is scheduled to be in Cleveland.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Pitches well but takes 10th loss

Hendricks (3-10) allowed two runs on five hits across six innings to take the loss Monday against the Twins. He walked one and struck out five. Hendricks pitched well for the second straight start, but rookie David Festa and four Minnesota relievers shut the Cubs down in a 3-0 win. For Hendricks, the five strikeouts are his second most in an outing this year, and he's allowed only five runs across 11 innings in his last two appearances. It's a step in the right direction for the veteran, who still has a rough 6.60 ERA overall. Hendricks will look to keep building momentum in his next scheduled start, which is penciled in for next Monday against the Guardians.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Grabs third win

Hendricks (3-9) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings to earn the win over the Reds on Wednesday. Aside from a three-run home run by Jake Fraley in the fifth inning, Hendricks had a strong start. He didn't allow a baserunner the first time through the order and got through his five frames on 73 pitches (44 strikes). Hendricks ended July with a 5.25 ERA over 24 innings, winning two of his five starts and allowing a total of four homers. For the season, he has a 6.86 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 60:26 K:BB through 20 appearances (15 starts). He is projected to make his next start at home versus the Twins.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Tagged with six runs

Hendricks (2-9) allowed six runs on eight hits over five innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Royals. Hendricks worked through four scoreless frames before things unraveled in the fifth inning as Kansas City racked up six runs, capped off by Salvador Perez's three-run shot. Hendricks has gone 1-5 with a 6.07 ERA over his last six outings, but that stretch has actually lowered his season ERA to 6.95 across 80.1 innings. He's currently in line to start in Cincinnati next week.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Stymies Cardinals in win

Hendricks (2-7) earned the win Friday against St. Louis, allowing five hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings. He struck out three. The right-handed veteran was masterful in this 90-pitch outing, not allowing a runner to reach second base. Hendricks has schooled the Cardinals throughout his career, as he is now 14-4 with a 2.52 ERA and 1.04 WHIP across 179 innings against them. With the scoreless effort, he lowered his ERA from 7.53 to 6.78 over 70.1 innings this season.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Takes hard-luck loss

Hendricks (1-5) allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four over seven innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Giants. Hendricks has faced the Giants in each of his two starts since returning to the rotation. He's limited them to three runs over 12.2 innings with a 12:2 K:BB, but he's gone 1-1 in those outings. It's still a positive sign after his awful start to the campaign landed him a demotion to the bullpen, where he surrendered five runs over 14.1 innings across five appearances. He's now at a 6.87 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 43:17 K:BB over 57.2 innings through 14 appearances (nine starts) this year. Hendricks is tentatively projected to make his next start at home in a tough matchup against the Phillies.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Earns win in return to rotation

Hendricks (1-4) allowed one run on two hits across 5.2 innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Giants. He walked one and struck out eight. Making his first start since May 17, Hendricks looked sharp, particularly with the season-high eight strikeouts. Since that last start and his shift to the bullpen, the veteran has pitched much better than earlier in the season. Hendricks now has a 2.70 ERA over his last 20 innings pitched, including Wednesday's start. He figures to stick in the rotation for now, and his next appearance is tentatively set for Tuesday against the Giants again, this time on the road.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Likely moving into rotation

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said after Friday's loss to the Cardinals that Hendricks is likely to take Jordan Wicks' (oblique) spot in the rotation, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. Hendricks came on in relief for the injured Wicks in the second inning Friday and tossed 4.1 scoreless frames. The veteran right-hander has been disastrous on the whole this season with an 8.20 ERA, but he hasn't been scored upon over his last 8.2 innings out of the bullpen. Hendricks would tentatively be lined up to start Wednesday at home versus the Giants.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Looks sharp Friday

Hendricks tossed 4.1 scoreless innings of relief in Friday's 3-0 loss to the Cardinals. He allowed two hits and struck out one. Chicago starter Jordan Hicks departed after just 1.2 innings due to an oblique injury, which pushed Hendricks into action. The veteran responded well and had perhaps his best outing of the season, giving the Cubs some much-needed length out of the bullpen. While Hendricks still has an ugly 8.20 ERA overall, he's been better lately with 8.2 scoreless innings over his last three appearances. The veteran is the most likely candidate to move into the rotation with Wicks expected to land on the IL.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Looks better Sunday

Hendricks tossed three scoreless innings of relief in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Reds. He allowed three hits and two walks while striking out three. While it wasn't the cleanest outing, it was a step in the right direction for Hendricks. In his first two appearances since getting moved to the bullpen at the end of May, the veteran had allowed five earned runs across 5.2 innings. Hendricks still has an ugly 9.38 ERA overall, and his fantasy value has mostly vanished in this long-relief role, but he could push to rejoin the rotation at some point if he strings together some effective performances.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Ineffective in first relief outing

Hendricks allowed two runs on four hits across two innings of relief in Thursday's 3-0 loss to Atlanta. He walked one and struck out one. After allowing eight runs (seven earned) across 4.2 innings in his last start to push his ERA up to 10.57, Hendricks got bumped to the bullpen. The veteran made his first relief appearance of the season Thursday, and while he actually lowered his ERA to 10.47, it wasn't a particularly inspiring effort. Hendricks has never been a big strikeout pitcher, relying instead on sharp control to fuel his success, but he's fallen off in a big way so far this year. The righty has limited fantasy appeal in his current role.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Sent to bullpen

Manager Craig Counsell said Tuesday that Hendricks will pitch out of the bullpen moving forward, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. The veteran right-hander enjoyed a resurgent 2023 with a 3.74 ERA in 24 outings, but this season has been a disaster with a 10.57 ERA across 30.2 innings. A return to the rotation could be in store if Hendricks is able to get on track out of the bullpen. He has just one non-playoff relief appearance during his 11-year MLB career.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Falls to Pittsburgh

Hendricks (0-4) took the loss Friday against the Pirates, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out four. Hendricks started the day well, allowing just one hit through two scoreless innings. However, Jared Triolo would snap a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the third before the Pirates tacked on three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. It's been a brutal start to the year for the veteran right-hander -- Hendricks has now allowed five or more runs in five of his first seven outings. His ERA is up to 10.57 with a 1.99 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB across 30.2 innings. Things won't get any easier for him in his next start -- he's currently set for a tough home matchup with Atlanta.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Looks like himself

Hendricks didn't factor into the decision Sunday against Pittsburgh, allowing one run on two hits and four walks across five innings. He struck out five. Hendricks was placed on the IL on April 23 with a lower back strain, a move that followed an extremely uncharacteristic start to the season. Prior to the injury, Hendricks stumbled to a 12.00 ERA and a 2.10 WHIP with eight homers allowed across 21.0 innings. Considering Hendricks had allowed 28 combined home runs over 221.1 innings the past two seasons and owned a 3.54 career ERA before 2024, Sunday's start was much more in line with Hendricks' averages. While one solid start doesn't mean fantasy managers should expect the Hendricks of old moving forward, it's a positive sign amid a not-so-positive season for Hendricks. He's lined up for a rematch with the Pirates on Friday.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Making return from IL on Sunday

The Cubs reinstated Hendricks (back) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Sunday in Pittsburgh, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The Cubs initially planned to have Hendricks make the third start of his rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Sunday, but he'll end up returning from the IL earlier than expected after rotation mate Jameson Taillon (back) wasn't available to start this weekend. Hendricks struck out 13 and allowed just three walks while giving up three runs over 9.1 innings between his two rehab outings, but he struggled mightily over his first five starts with the Cubs before landing on the shelf (0-3 record, 12.00 ERA, 2.10 WHIP in 21 innings).

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Starting Sunday in Pittsburgh

Hendricks (back) will return from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday in Pittsburgh, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Hendricks had been slated to make one more rehab start, but Jameson Taillon (back) isn't quite ready to start Sunday, so Hendricks will take the ball that day for the big club instead. The veteran hurler has been sidelined for the last three weeks with a lower-back strain but pitched well in two rehab outings, allowing three runs with a 13:3 K:BB in 9.1 frames. Hendricks held a woeful 12.00 ERA in five starts before getting injured, so fantasy mangers certainly need to see something positive before putting their trust in the right-hander.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Responds well to latest rehab start

Hendricks (back) struck out six and allowed one earned run on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings in his second rehab start Tuesday with Triple-A Iowa. Hendricks tossed 85 pitches in the outing and said Wednesday that he "felt great" during his time on the mound, per Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. The right-hander's pitch count and own comments about his health suggests that he'll be ready to make his next start with the Cubs, perhaps as soon as Sunday in Pittsburgh. Once Hendricks is activated from the 15-day injured list, he'll likely be taking over Hayden Wesneski's spot in the rotation.

  • Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Being reevaluated after rehab start

Hendricks (back) is back in Chicago to be reevaluated after making a rehab start with Double-A Tennessee on Thursday, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports. Hendricks' line at Tennessee was promising, as he struck out seven and didn't walk anyone while allowing two runs over five innings. Whether he showed enough to be immediately re-inserted into the Cubs' rotation seemingly will be decided after he meets with the team. Hendricks had put up an ugly 12.00 ERA and 2.10 WHIP over five outings before going on the injured list, so it wouldn't be a surprise if the team asks him to make additional rehab starts before being activated.
