Player Outlook
Terence Mann told us in Field of Dreams that the one constant through all the years is baseball. He was wrong; the one constant is Rafael Devers continues to rake in Boston whether they are in a boom year contending for a title or a bust year beginning another refresh cycle as the club was in 2023. Devers finished just inside the top 30 overall fantasy players in 2023 despite the lineup issues around him with the early injury to Duvall and the ups and downs of the the youngsters Casas and Duran. Devers continued his Saberhagenmetric cycle of 30 homer & 100+ RBI seasons in odd-numbered seasons but may have fallen into the trap of the new shifting rules. Devers had his highest pull percentage in five seasons and hit for his lowest full-season batting average since 2018. His StatCast measures are still extremely red, in a good way, nearly across the board as he enters the prime years for power hitters.

Devers (shoulder) is batting cleanup as the designated hitter Friday against the Tigers, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Soreness in both shoulders kept Devers out of the lineup for the past three games, but he's back in action for Friday's series opener, although without defensive responsibilities. • Red Sox's Rafael Devers: Return planned for Friday

Devers (shoulders) is expected to return to the lineup Friday, MLB.com reports. "Raffy should DH [Friday], DH [on] Saturday and play the field on Sunday," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Thursday. Devers had been playing through discomfort in both shoulders before sitting out the last three games. It's been a recurring issue since he first tweaked his left shoulder while swinging in a game during spring training. He also hurt his right shoulder in July while diving for a grounder during a game in Colorado. It hasn't impacted his performance at the plate though, and through 517 plate appearances he's posted a career-high .940 OPS with 28 homers and 80 RBI.

  • Red Sox's Rafael Devers: Will rest shoulder over break

Devers will skip next week's All-Star Game in order to rest a nagging left shoulder injury, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Devers missed a few games back in April after injuring the shoulder and it's evidently still caused discomfort at times. The third baseman's production has gotten better every month this season, so the injury doesn't seem to be affecting him much. He has started every game since June 11, including Tuesday's versus the Athletics. Still, Devers and the Red Sox felt it was best for him to rest up over the All-Star break. A replacement for Devers on the American League roster will be announced in the coming days.
