Player Outlook
For the second straight season, Jordan Montgomery began the year pitching for a team with playoff aspirations but was traded at the deadline to a team a team still in contention. Of course, last season ended with Montgomery celebrating a World Series win with the Rangers. Montgomery began the season recording a 3.42 ERA and 1.25 WHIP for the Cardinals, fanning 108 in 121 frames. After joining Texas, Montgomery posted a 2.79 ERA and 1.09 WHIP punching out 58 in 67.2 innings. His 21.4 percent strikeout rate is below average, but the southpaw is frugal with free passes and does a good job keeping the ball in the yard. Montgomery is durable, with his 94 starts over the past three seasons tied for sixth most in MLB. A low strikeout rate hurts Montgomery's fantasy appeal, but it also keeps his cost of acquisition affordable. There is always risk a pitcher of this ilk experiences some misfortune, but he has displayed the ability to buffer ratios in a rotisserie league format.

Montgomery (lower leg) was diagnosed with a contusion after leaving Monday's game against the Dodgers, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Exits appearance with injury

Montgomery was removed from Monday's appearance versus the Dodgers in the seventh inning after being hit in the lower right leg with a comebacker, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports. Montgomery immediately developed a sizable welt on his leg after being hit with a Teoscar Hernandez comebacker. He was making his second relief appearance since being demoted to the bullpen and was charged with three runs over 2.2 innings. The Diamondbacks should have more on Montgomery's condition after the game.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Headed to bullpen

The Diamondbacks plan to move Montgomery to the bullpen beginning with this weekend's series in Boston, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM reports. Montgomery has never got on track after signing late in spring training with Arizona and not making his season debut until late April. The left-hander has posted an ugly 6.44 ERA and 67:36 K:BB over 95 innings covering 19 starts, and with Ryne Nelson thriving of late, Nelson will retain his spot in the rotation while Montgomery moves to a long-relief role.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Serves up six runs against Marlins

Montgomery allowed six runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out four batters over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against Miami on Wednesday. Most of the damage against Montgomery came in the fourth inning, when the Marlins pounded out four runs on five hits, including three extra-base knocks. The southpaw at least managed to hang around nearly two additional frames to reduce the burden on Arizona's bullpen, but the 10 total hits he allowed tied a season-worst mark. Montgomery has been prone to blow-ups this season, yielding at least six earned runs on six different occasions. That's a big reason why his ERA sits at an unsightly 6.44 through 95 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Racks up eight Ks in win

Montgomery (8-6) picked up the win Wednesday against Colorado, allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight in six innings. Montgomery had one of his best starts of the season Wednesday, notching his first quality start since June 21 while registering a season-high eight punchouts. The 31-year-old still need sto clean up his control to become more consistent -- Montgomery has now issued multiple free passes in four consecutive starts and his 3.5 BB/9 this season is a far cry from his career mark of 2.6. The southpaw owns an ugly 6.25 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 63:35 K:BB across 89.1 innings (18 starts) this season. Montgomery will look to build momentum in his next scheduled start, a favorable matchup in Miami early next week.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Falls apart late

Montgomery (7-6) took the loss against the Phillies on Thursday, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out four. Montgomery allowed at least one hit in each of the first five innings but managed to keep the Phillies off the board while pitching his way out of multiple jams. However, the veteran lefty's luck would run out in the sixth after he hit Nick Castellanos with a pitch, as he then failed to retire three of the next four batters before being relieved by Dylan Floro with two outs. Three of the four runs charged to Montgomery came across after he left the contest. He's failed to make it through six innings in five consecutive starts, and Montgomery has also issued multiple walks in each of his last three outings while posting only eight strikeouts over that stretch.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Looks good in rain-shortened start

Montgomery did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Pirates, allowing one run on one hit and two walks over three innings. He struck out three. The veteran southpaw was looking sharp until rain created a 68-minute delay in the middle of the fourth inning, ending Montgomery's day prematurely. While the delay was out of his control, he hasn't been able to give Arizona much length even under ideal conditions -- Montgomery's completed six innings only once in his last nine trips to the mound, posting a brutal 8.20 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 27:17 K:BB through 37.1 innings over that stretch. He'll try to build on Saturday's performance in his next start, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Phillies.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Stumbles early Monday

Montgomery allowed six runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out one over four innings in a no-decision versus the Nationals. Montgomery put Arizona in a 5-0 hole before the team's offense had an at-bat. He was able to stretch out to 78 pitches (49 strikes) in his second start back from knee inflammation, but this was a discouraging performance. He was spared the loss when the Diamondbacks completed their comeback in the ninth inning. The veteran southpaw has a 6.51 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 48:27 K:BB through 15 starts this season. He's projected for a road start at Pittsburgh this weekend.

Montgomery (7-5) earned the win Tuesday over the Royals, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings. Montgomery missed nearly a month with right knee inflammation, but he was able to skip a rehab assignment. The southpaw threw 67 pitches (39 strikes) Tuesday and may need to build up over his next couple of starts to get back to a regular workload. In terms of performance, this was one of his best outings of the season and something to build upon in the second half. He's at a 6.11 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 47:24 K:BB through 70.2 innings over 14 starts this season. Montgomery is lined up for a home start versus the Nationals his next time out.

The Diamondbacks reinstated Montgomery (knee) from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday against the Royals, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. The veteran left-hander has been on the shelf nearly a month due to right knee inflammation and is returning to Arizona's rotation without a minor-league rehab assignment. Montgomery threw 56 pitches in a simulated game Thursday and will likely face some minor workload limitations in his first couple starts back with the Diamondbacks.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: On track to return early next week

Montgomery (knee) is on track to rejoin the Diamondbacks' rotation early next week in Kansas City after completing a three-inning, 56-pitch simulated game Thursday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Montgomery has been shelved since late June with right knee inflammation, but a return is right around the corner. He will skip a rehab assignment, with the Diamondbacks deeming a trio of simulated games enough to get the veteran left-hander ramped back up. Montgomery holds a disappointing 6.44 ERA in 13 starts for Arizona this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Should be back after All-Star break

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Sunday that he feels good about Montgomery's (knee) chances of returning from the 15-day injured list for the first turn through the rotation coming out of the All-Star break, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Montgomery threw a two-inning, 40-pitch simulated bullpen session Friday and apparently responded favorably. Though he won't have the opportunity to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment during the upcoming week due to the All-Star break, the southpaw should be able to push up his pitch count with another simulated game in Arizona. Lovullo didn't specify whether Montgomery was likely to start in the Diamondbacks' first series of the second half next weekend in Arizona or the following series in Kansas City, but the club already opened up a spot in the rotation for the 31-year-old when they optioned Slade Cecconi to Triple-A Reno on Thursday.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Thursday that Montgomery (knee) could be ready for Arizona's road trip immediately following the All-Star break, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Montgomery is set for a bullpen session Friday, which follows his return to mound work Tuesday after briefly being shut down with knee inflammation. Lovullo didn't give a specific target date for Montgomery's return, though it seems that the left-hander will be able to forego a rehab assignment.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Throws bullpen session

Montgomery (knee) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Montgomery exited the throwing session "feeling good" according to manager Torey Lovullo, as the left-hander works his way back from right knee inflammation. Montgomery has an outside chance of returning from the 15-day injured list Sunday at home versus the Blue Jays, though it seems more likely the team will wait until after the All-Star break to activate him.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Cleared for mound work

Montgomery (knee) will throw a 20-to-25 pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Montgomery resumed flat-ground work over the weekend and has now been cleared to try things from the bump. The veteran left-hander is eligible to return from his right knee injury on Sunday, and it would appear possible that he'll be ready by that time. However, the Diamondbacks could also elect to push Montgomery's return until after the All-Star break in order to allow him extra time to heal.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Slated for flat-ground throwing

Manager Torey Lovullo said Friday that Montgomery (knee) will begin throwing off flat ground Saturday, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports. Lovullo noted that Montgomery is still dealing with a bit of inflammation in his right knee, but the team believes he'll be in good enough condition to throw. Assuming all goes well Saturday, the 31-year-old southpaw will likely be given the green light to begin throwing off a mound within the next several days.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Lands on injured list

The Diamondbacks placed Montgomery on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to June 29, due to right knee inflammation. Montgomery was tagged for eight runs (four earned) during his start Thursday against the Twins, though it's unclear if the injury played a role in those results. The veteran left-hander will be eligible to be reinstated for the final game before the All-Star break July 14 versus the Blue Jays, but a return after the Midsummer Classic likely more realistic.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Roughed up in loss

Montgomery (6-5) was saddled with the loss Thursday, allowing eight runs (four earned) on nine hits and one walk over 2.2 innings against the Twins. He struck out one. Montgomery's line could have been a lot worse if not for a catcher's interference call and a throwing error accounting for half of the eight total runs he allowed. Among the nine hits allowed were three infield singles, no homers and two extra-base hits for Montgomery, suggesting that this performance was marred by a bit of bad luck. After struggling to 14 earned runs allowed over six innings during consecutive starts on May 31 and June 5, Montgomery had righted the ship over the next three outings prior to Thursday, allowing just five earned runs over 16.2 innings and collecting the win in each. His next start won't get any easier as he's presently slated to face the Dodgers in Los Angeles during a mid-week series.
