Some saw Ha-seong Kim having a good year for a loaded San Diego lineup but we are not aware of anyone who projected him to be the third-best fantasy batter on the team over the course of the full season. Kim set a professional career-best with his 38 steals and also surfaced the power and run-scoring abilities the marketplace hoped for from him in 2022. He has increased his ability to accept walks in each of his three seasons with San Diego and his batting average has improved in kind. His batting average has room for improvement, and it must come from him improving his outputs against righties as he has been a below-average producer against righties (95 wRC+ last season) while excelling against southpaws (148 wRC+ last season.) The triple position eligibility is going to further push up his draft day price for fantasy managers whereas he was one of the more incredible fantasy bargains this time last year.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Not yet throwing across diamond

Kim (shoulder) is taking live at-bats at San Diego's spring-training complex in Arizona and has also been playing catch, taking grounders and swinging in the batting cage; however, he's not yet throwing across the diamond, per MLB.com. Kim landed on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation Aug. 20 and is already eligible to be activated. While his ability to engage in a variety of baseball activities is promising, the fact that the Padres have thus far kept Kim from making throws to first base suggests that he still has a major hurdle to clear. Mason McCoy has been getting the majority of the starts at shortstop for San Diego while Kim has been sidelined.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Joining team on road this week

Padres manager Mike Shildt said Monday on 97.3 The Fan that Kim (shoulder) is slated to join the club in St. Louis on Tuesday. Shildt noted that Kim was scheduled to have his injured right shoulder examined again Monday, and presuming everything looks OK, the infielder would then rejoin the club on the road. It's not clear what the next step would be, but it would likely include the resumption of baseball activities. Kim is first eligible to return from the 10-day injured list Thursday, but it's uncertain whether he might have a shot to be back by that date.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Goes on injured list

The Padres placed Kim on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with right shoulder inflammation. Kim received somewhat favorable MRI results after he jammed his shoulder during Sunday's game against Colorado, but the team ultimately decided to put him on the shelf after further evaluation. Tyler Wade will presumably take over as the Padres' primary shortstop while Kim is out, and Matthew Batten will come up from Triple-A to provide additional depth in the infield.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Remaining on bench Tuesday

Kim (shoulder) is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Twins, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The 28-year-old jammed his right shoulder during Sunday's contest and received somewhat favorable MRI results Monday, but he'll sit Tuesday for the second consecutive. It remains to be seen if Kim will require a trip to the injured list as he continues to be evaluated. Tyler Wade is receiving another start at shortstop Tuesday for the Friars.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Absent from Monday's lineup

Kim (shoulder) is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Twins, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Kim had to depart Sunday's game versus the Rockies with a jammed right shoulder and was set to undergo an MRI. The results of those tests are not yet known, but he will miss at least one start and possibly more. Tyler Wade is subbing in at shortstop for the series opener against the Twins.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Diagnosed with jammed shoulder

Kim exited Sunday's game against the Rockies due to a jammed right shoulder. Kim suffered the injury while diving back into first base in the third inning and immediately left the game. It doesn't sound as if the injury is serious, though the Padres have not given a timeline for Kim's return.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Swipes 22nd bag

Kim went 2-for-3 with a stolen base in a 2-1 win against Pittsburgh on Monday. It was a quiet game offensively for both sides, and Kim was the only Padre with multiple hits. The knocks didn't directly produce any runs, but the shortstop did add to his fantasy line with a stolen base in the eighth inning. Kim is up to 22 thefts on the campaign, giving him a realistic chance of reaching 30 steals for the second straight season.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Out again Wednesday

Kim (triceps) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Pittsburgh, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Kim will miss a second straight start while dealing with soreness in his right triceps. The Padres are considering the infielder day-to-day. Tyler Wade will garner another start at shortstop Wednesday in Kim's stead.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Picks up 19th steal

Kim went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Guardians. Kim reached on a single in the second inning, and he went on to steal a base and score on a Kyle Higashioka double. Kim now has 19 steals this season, and his 57 swipes since the start of 2023 are tied with Nico Hoerner for the seventh most in MLB in that span. Kim has started all but three games at shortstop for the Padres this season. The 28-year-old is just 9-for-45 over his last 14 games but has solid counting stats for the season with 10 homers, 40 RBI and 51 runs scored over 100 games.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Breaks slump Friday

Kim went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk and three total runs scored in Friday's 10-3 win over the Diamondbacks. Kim went 0-for-10 with two walks over the previous three games before breaking out Friday. The homer was his eighth of the year but just his second over the last 18 contests. The shortstop has a .223/.332/.393 slash line with 29 RBI, 34 runs scored and 13 stolen bases through 66 games. While his ratios are a bit adrift compared to his last two seasons, Kim continues to hold down a starting role and is delivering solid production in the counting stats.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Two hits, three RBI in win

Kim went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, three RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 7-3 win over the Royals. Kim led off the third inning with a triple before coming around to score on a Luis Arraez sacrifice fly. He'd then provide what proved to be the game-deciding hit in the fourth, driving in three runs with a base-clearing double to put the Padres ahead 5-3. Kim's now 4-for-10 with three extra-base hits in his last three games. After a slow start to the year, he's gotten his slash line up to .222/.332/.384 with seven homers, 31 runs scored, 27 RBI and 13 steals across 60 contests.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Produces team's lone run Wednesday

Kim went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a loss to Miami on Wednesday. Kim's third-inning solo shot was the only run San Diego managed against Braxton Garrett and four Marlins relievers. The long ball was Kim's seventh through 231 plate appearances this season, putting him on pace to surpass last year's career-best total of 17 homers. The shortstop has added 13 stolen bases but has otherwise struggled with a .214/.326/.367 slash line.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Swipes two bags

Kim went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two stolen bases in Thursday's 6-4 extra-inning win over the Reds. Kim seemingly has a green light to run right now -- he's logged five steals over his last five games, going 5-for-15 with five walks in that span. The shortstop is up to 13 thefts on 14 attempts this season, putting him roughly on pace to match his total of 38 steals in 2023. Kim has a .216/.335/.369 slash line with six home runs, 22 RBI, 25 runs scored, four doubles and two triples over 52 games, but his recent hitting suggests he may be turning things around. Kim still figures to hit in the bottom half of the order most of the time.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Getting breather Wednesday

Kim is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds. Though double-play partner Xander Bogaerts will be in store for a long-term absence after he was diagnosed Wednesday with a fractured shoulder, Kim's absence from the lineup appears to be little more than a maintenance day. Tyler Wade will cover shortstop in Kim's stead.

The shortstop then added a triple in the fourth before coming around to score a second time as the Padres jumped back out to a two-run lead. Kim is still batting just .182 in April following the two-hit performance, though he's now hit safely in three of his last four contests. It also marked his second triple in his last three games.
