Player Outlook
After being selected first overall in the 2021 MLB Draft, Henry Davis was limited to only 59 games in 2022 by a wrist injury. That appeared to set back his timeline to reach the majors, though he ripped through work at Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis to reach Pittsburgh by mid-June of 2023. Davis' opening sample in the majors wasn't all that inspiring, as he managed only a .653 OPS, .287 wOBA and 76 wRC+. That was driven primarily by a strikeout rate that spiked to 27 percent after sitting consistently in the high teens and low 20s throughout his minor-league stints. Considering he also played through a right hand injury, there were some positive underlying signs from his time in the majors despite the poor surface stats, highlighted by a 7.0 percent barrel rate and 88.6 average exit velocity - both of which were almost exactly league-average. In addition to proving he can stay healthy, the biggest question for Davis is where he'll play defensively. After playing primarily behind the plate in the minors, upon reaching the majors, he started exclusively in right field or at DH. He'll enter the 2024 season without catcher eligibility as a result, though general manager Ben Cherington stated early in the offseason that the team still views him as an option behind the dish. If he gets enough playing time to regain eligibility, he'll instantly be back on fantasy radars, but he's far less appealing as an outfielder and potentially first baseman.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: First start since being recalled

Davis went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts Tuesday against the Cubs. Davis was recalled to the majors Monday to replace Joey Bart (hamstring) on the roster. Davis drew his first start one day later, serving as the catcher while hitting ninth. He should get some opportunity for at-bats as long as Bart is sidelined, though it's unclear how playing time will be allocated between Davis and Yasmani Grandal.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Recalled from Triple-A, as expected

The Pirates recalled Davis from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday. Davis will receive another opportunity as a result of Joey Bart (hamstring) landing on the 10-day injured list. The 24-year-old has managed a .503 OPS in 29 games in the majors this season but had been hitting well of late with Indianapolis with a .939 OPS and a couple of home runs over his last 12 contests. Davis should share catching responsibilities with Yasmani Grandal while Bart is sidelined.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Set to join major-league roster

Davis is expected to be called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Davis will return to the major-league roster for the first time since mid-June after producing a .301 average with six home runs, 26 RBI, 25 runs scored and seven stolen bases since his demotion. • Pirates' Henry Davis: Activated and optioned

The Pirates reinstated Davis (concussion) from the 7-day injured list Sunday and optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis. Davis had made the last three of his five rehab appearances at Indianapolis, so he'll stick around with the affiliate since the Pirates didn't have a spot for him on the 26-man active roster. Joey Bart will continue to serve as the top backup to No. 1 catcher Yasmani Grandal, though with Grandal on an expiring contract and having mustered a lowly .511 OPS over 128 plate appearances on the season, it wouldn't be surprising if he was eventually designated for assignment to make room for Davis at some point after the All-Star break.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Resuming rehab assignment

Davis (concussion) will resume a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Davis was pulled off a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona this past weekend after he experienced recurring concussion symptoms. However, he's evidently passed the necessary protocols and will resume things in Indianapolis. Davis could be ready for activation soon if he can avoid another setback, but he's not guaranteed to return to the big-league roster at that time.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Rehab assignment put on pause

Davis had his rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona put on hold over the weekend after he experienced recurring concussion symptoms, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Initially placed on the 7-day injured list June 15 after experiencing concussion-like symptoms a day earlier in the Pirates' win over the Rockies, Davis was cleared to begin his rehab assignment last Wednesday. However, after appearing in two games with Altoona, Davis suffered an apparent setback and is now without a clear timeline to resume the assignment. With Joey Bart beating Davis back from the 10-day IL on Sunday, the Pirates may not have room for Davis on the big-league roster once his concussion symptoms subside and he's cleared to return from the 7-day IL.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Beginning assignment Wednesday

Davis (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on Wednesday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Davis has been on the 7-day concussion IL since June 15, and Wednesday will be the first time he's played in any sort of game since then. The Pirates haven't indicated how long the 24-year-old's assignment might last, though it's possible he remains in the minors upon being activated after slashing just .153/.267/.235 across 101 major-league plate appearances this season.

Davis went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Wednesday in a 4-2 loss to the Cardinals. Davis gave Pittsburgh its second run of the contest with a solo shot to center field in the eighth inning. The long ball was his first in what has been a very disappointing season, as he's slashing a meager .157/.273/.241 through 99 plate appearances. With Joey Bart (thumb) on the injured list, Davis has been splitting time behind the plate with veteran Yasmani Grandal.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Back in majors, will start Tuesday

The Pirates recalled Davis from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Manager Derek Shelton confirmed that Davis will draw the start at catcher Tuesday against the Dodgers in the 24-year-old's return to the big leagues. He should ultimately split starts behind the dish with veteran Yasmani Grandal. Davis was optioned in early May after a dreadful start to the season, but he rebounded at Indianapolis by slashing .296/.436/.642 with seven home runs in 23 contests.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Returning to big leagues

Davis is expected to be called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, Corey Crisan of DK Pittsburgh Sports reports. Davis was sent down May 3 after a disappointing start to the season with the Pirates, but he's slashed .282 with seven home runs, 17 RBI, 18 runs scored and a stolen base over 22 contests at Triple-A. He opened the season as Pittsburgh's primary option at catcher, and he'll likely split time with Yasmani Grandal at backstop once back in the big leagues. Grant Koch stands out as the most likely option to be sent down to Indianapolis in a corresponding move, but nothing is official yet.

  • Pirates' Henry Davis: Late addition to lineup

Davis will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Mets. The Pirates' initial lineup released earlier Wednesday didn't include Davis, but he'll end up making a third straight start behind the dish to close out the series in Queens. • Pirates' Henry Davis: Taking seat Monday

Davis is absent from the lineup for Monday's tilt versus the Tigers. Joey Bart will do the catching for Mitch Keller, marking Bart's second start in the last three games. • Pirates' Henry Davis: Slow start to season

Davis went 0-for-2 with an RBI on Sunday against the Orioles. Davis is hitless in five straight games spanning 16 plate appearances. He's also struck out 43.8 percent of the time in that span, though he had a brief bright spot on Sunday when he drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. With Yasmani Grandal (foot) and Jason Delay (knee) both out, Davis faces diminished competition for plate appearances. However, Joey Bart made quite an impression in his debut with the Pirates and could start to see his playing time tick up.
