Player Outlook
Luis Gil underwent Tommy John surgery in May of 2022 and made it back for two appearances at Triple-A in September of 2023. His mid-to-upper-90s fastball velocity was back, averaging 96 mph while touching 99 mph. His devastating high-spin slider was also at its pre-surgery 85-86 mph velocity. This is his last season with a minor-league option, so the 25-year-old righty may move back and forth between Triple-A and the majors, particularly if the Yankees want to keep developing him as a starter. While Gil's repertoire is pretty shallow -- he'll flash a decent changeup but it is rarely used -- the biggest swing skill for him will be his command, as his fastball and slider are good enough pitches to turn a lineup over twice if he's locating them. He's had a walk rate north of 14 percent during four of his six assignments since 2021, and the hope is that his control will be passable as he gets further removed from surgery. If he does get moved to the bullpen, Gil has the stuff to pitch in high-leverage situations.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Poised to return this weekend

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that there's a "very good chance" Gil (back) will rejoin the rotation this weekend against the Cubs, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. Gil made what's expected to be his lone rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, getting charged with three runs while striking out six over 3.2 frames. He threw 80 pitches in the outing, so the righty should be sufficiently stretched out for a pretty typical workload versus the Cubs. Clarke Schmidt (lat) is also expected back in the rotation this weekend, so the Yankees appear poised to operate with a six-man setup for now. Eventually, one or both of them could be shifted to relief ahead of the postseason.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Beginning rehab stint Sunday

Gil (back) will make a minor-league rehab start Sunday, MLB.com reports. Gil exited his Aug. 20 start against Cleveland after three-plus innings due to lower-back discomfort, and he subsequently landed on the 15-day injured list. The right-hander has since been able to toss a live batting practice session of around 65 pitches, and he may not require more than one rehab appearance before rejoining the Yankees rotation. Gil is eligible to return from the IL on Sept. 6, which would be five days after Sunday's rehab start.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Rehab start early next week

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Gil (back) will likely make a rehab start in five days, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Gil got through a live batting practice session Tuesday with no issues and should be in line for a rehab start Monday or Tuesday. Given that he's been on the shelf for a brief period of time with a lower-back strain, Gil shouldn't need more than one rehab start before being activated from the 15-day injured list, potentially as soon as next weekend. The New York rotation is fluid right now with Clarke Schmidt (lat) also nearing a return and likely to beat Gil back from the IL. The plan is for both Gil and Schmidt to return as starters, but one or both of them could eventually shift to relief later on in September.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Faces hitters

Gil (back) threw live batting practice with Double-A Somerset on Tuesday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. After Gil threw a bullpen session Sunday, manager Aaron Boone indicated that Gil would either throw live BP or begin a rehab assignment next. While Gil is with the Yankees' Double-A affiliate, he hasn't yet began to pitch in games. There's optimism that the 26-year-old could be ready to be activated once he becomes eligible Sept. 6, so a rehab start could be the next step for Gil.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Throws bullpen session

Gil (back) threw a bullpen session Sunday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that the team is still determining whether Gil's next time on the mound will be a live batting practice session or a rehab start. The right-hander will be eligible for activation from the 15-day injured list on Sept. 6 and Boone added that it's possible Gil is ready by that date. The hurler is recovering from a lower-back strain.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Back injury believed to be minor

Manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Gil's lower-back strain is considered minor, and the Yankees are hopeful that he can return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible Sept. 5, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Gil tweaked his back during his start Tuesday against the Guardians and landed on the IL a day later. Boone is optimistic that Gil will be able to continue throwing throughout his stint on the IL, which would improve the right-hander's odds of making it back in the minimum 15 days. Boone added that he foresees Gil returning as a member of the rotation rather than the bullpen.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Sent to IL with back strain

The Yankees placed Gil on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a lower-back strain. Gil missed most of the past two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he had enjoyed good health thus far in 2024 until he was lifted from his start Tuesday against the Guardians due to the back issue. Will Warren was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre in a corresponding move and could step in as the Yankees' new No. 5 starter in place of Gil, who may be a drop candidate in redraft leagues since he won't be eligible to return from the IL until Sept. 5. The Yankees and fantasy managers alike have already gotten far more than they likely expected from Gil, who had generated a 3.30 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 144 strikeouts over 124.2 innings through his first 24 starts of the season.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Exits with trainer

Gil was removed from Tuesday's game against the Guardians due to back tightness. The 26-year-old righty needed 78 pitches to get through three-plus innings before leaving the game, during which he gave up three runs on three hits and six walks while striking out three batters. He'll presumably undergo imaging to determine the severity of his injury, and his status for his next start -- tentatively scheduled to come against the Rockies over the weekend -- is uncertain.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Suffers sixth loss

Gil (12-6) took the loss Monday against the White Sox, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out three. The New York rookie failed to collect his third consecutive win against a feeble Chicago lineup that laced seven hits, the most Gil has allowed since giving up eight to Baltimore on June 20. The 26-year-old stumbled out the gate at Guarantee Rate Field, walking Nicky Lopez to open the game and giving up two run-scoring doubles in the first inning. Overall, Gil has now pitched to a 3.25 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 141:60 K:BB across 121.2 innings this season. He is currently scheduled to make his next start at home against Cleveland next week.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Grabs win in Game 1 of twin bill

Gil (12-5) earned the win over the Angels in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader, allowing two hits and issuing five walks while striking out six batters over five scoreless innings. Gil's control was shaky in the outing, as he walked five batters, his second-highest total this season. However, the right-hander was nearly unhittable, giving up just a pair of harmless singles. The free passes ran Gil's pitch count up to 107, so he was unable to work long enough to register a quality start, but he did notch his third victory across his past four outings. That stretch has come following a four-game losing streak during which Gil posted a 9.37 ERA, so he appears to be back on track. On the season, Gil has shined with a 3.06 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 138:58 K:BB over 117.2 frames.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Angels-Yankees game postponed

Gil and the Yankees will not play Tuesday after their game versus the Angels was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a traditional doubleheader Wednesday. Scheduled starters Gil and Davis Daniel will be pushed back a day.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Gets lots of run support in victory

Gil (11-5) earned the win over Philadelphia on Monday, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight batters over 5.1 innings. Gil was given a 3-0 lead after two frames, and despite allowing a run in each of the third and fourth innings, he cruised to his 11th victory of the season as the Yankees offense piled on 14 runs by the end of the contest. The right-hander tallied 14 swinging strikes en route to eight punchouts and gave up just one extra-base hit (a solo homer). Gil's three-game streak of allowing just one run came to an end, but he did pick up his second with over his past three starts.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Fans six in no-decision

Gil came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Mets, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out six. After a rough stretch in late June and early July, Gil has turned things around and given up just one run in each of his last three outings while delivering a 22:2 K:BB over 17.2 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander's stumble came after he topped 100 pitches for the first time June 14 against the Red Sox, so expect the Yankees to keep a close eye on his workload the rest of the way. Gil lines up to make his next start on the road early next week in Philadelphia.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Strikes out seven for 10th win

Gil (10-5) earned the win against the Orioles on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over six innings. Gil allowed a run in the fourth but was otherwise fantastic, finishing with two perfect innings and departing with a 6-1 lead. The righty generated 15 swinging strikes and will head into the All-Star break with some momentum after yielding just two runs over his past two outings. On the season, he owns a 3.17 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 118:49 K:BB across 102.1 innings

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Strong start spoiled

Gil (9-5) took the loss Sunday against the Red Sox, allowing one run on four hits and no walks while striking out nine over 6.2 innings. Gil was locked into a scoreless pitcher's duel with Kutter Crawford until the former gave up an opposite-field solo home run to Rafael Devers in the seventh. He retired one more batter after Devers and then exited the game and wound up with the loss after the Yankees ended up getting shut out. It was an encouraging showing for Gil nonetheless after he had surrendered 16 runs and posted a 6:9 K:BB in 9.2 innings over his prior three starts. Sunday was also the first time the 26-year-old managed to not walk a batter all year and the first time he reached six innings since June 4. Gil will look to generate one more strong start before the All-Star break and currently lines up to face the Orioles in Baltimore over the weekend.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Keeps tumbling

Gil (9-4) took the loss Tuesday against Cincinnati, allowing four runs on two hits and three walks across four-plus innings. He struck out three. Gil surrendered at least four runs for a third straight start, something he'd done just once in his first 13 outings, continuing an unexpected freefall after an outstanding start to 2024. He was pulled after hitting a pair of batters and allowing a two-run home run to Will Benson in the fifth inning without recording an out. While Gil still owns a 3.41 ERA and a 102:48 K:BB across 89.2 innings, fantasy managers should proceed with caution, especially with a matchup against the Red Sox on the docket for Sunday.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Struggles again Wednesday

Gil (9-3) took the loss against the Mets on Wednesday, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks while striking out two batters over 4.1 innings. Gil was stung by both hard hits and walks -- three of the four knocks he allowed went for extra bases, and he also surrendered four free passes. His final two walks were particularly detrimental, as both runners came around to score following his departure. Gil has now put forward two straight poor outings, giving up 12 runs over 5.2 innings across his past two starts. He had a 2.02 ERA and was being mentioned in discussions about AL Cy Young Award contenders after a June 14 win against Boston, but his subsequent struggles have increased is ERA by over a run to 3.15.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Lit up for seven runs

Gil (9-2) was hit with the loss against the Orioles on Thursday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out one over 1.1 innings. Gil struggled out of the gate, surrendering a leadoff double to open the contest before eventually allowing one run in the first. However, things would get much worse for the right-hander in the following frame, as he failed to retire nine of the next 10 batters he faced, leading to his shortest outing of the campaign. Gil gave up a season-high seven runs on the afternoon and failed to make it through six innings for the third consecutive start. It also marked his first loss since April 15 against Toronto.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Back in win column

Gil (9-1) picked up the win Friday over the Red Sox, allowing one run on four hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out four. Gil struggled with his command, but he managed to limit Boston to a lone fourth-inning run. The 26-year-old right-hander allowed three runs in his last outing against the Dodgers, but he's held opponents to one run or fewer in eight of his last nine starts. Gil's ERA is down to 2.03 with a 0.98 WHIP and 96:39 K:BB across 80 innings this year. He's currently slated for a road matchup with the Orioles in his next outing.

  • Yankees' Luis Gil: Allows three runs Sunday

Gil did not factor into the decision in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five in 5.2 innings. Gil held the Dodgers in check through the first four innings, but they broke through in the fifth on a two-run double from Mookie Betts. Teoscar Hernandez would add to that with a solo home run in the sixth, leading to Gil's exit. Sunday was the first time Gil had given up more than one run in a start since he allowed five against the Brewers on April 26. The Yankees are now 11-2 in games started by Gil, and he'll carry a magnificent 2.04 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 90:35 K:BB (75 innings) into a showdown versus the Red Sox over the weekend.
