Player Outlook
Mark Vientos earned a promotion to the big club in mid-May following a monster start to the season at Triple-A Syracuse. He struggled to replicate the success with the Mets, as he banged out nine home runs over 233 plate appearances but also posted a .620 OPS while striking out at a 30.5 percent clip. Vientos has fanned at a 27 percent rate during his time at Double- and Triple-A, so we probably can't count on much of an improvement with his strikeout rate in 2024. He did also draw walks at a 10.1 percent rate during those stops in the minors, so the 4.3 percent rate he had with the Mets could tick up. Ultimately, Vientos is likely to go as far as his power will take him, and he did collect a robust 51 percent hard-hit rate and 10.7 percent barrel rate. The 24-year-old could only have designated hitter eligibility initially in your fantasy league, and that spot might be his clearest path to playing time with the Mets.

  • Mets' Mark Vientos: Goes deep Sunday

Vientos went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Padres. Vientos took Jason Adam deep to center in the seventh inning for one of two extra-base hits the Mets had all afternoon. It's the third time in his last five games with multiple hits and he's now tied for fourth among all third basemen with 21 homers despite having just 332 plate appearances. Vientos has seen himself batting from the two-hole the last 10 games, and while he owns a .977 OPS over that span, he's also striking out 44.9 percent of the time compared to 24.7 percent before the lineup change. The 24-year-old is enjoying a breakout campaign, slashing .277/.334/.551 with 41 extra-base hits, 55 RBI, 44 runs and a 25:92 BB:K.

  • Mets' Mark Vientos: Two hits, three RBI in win

Vientos went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI in Thursday's win over the Padres. Vientos doubled home the Mets' first run of the game in the opening frame and later added a two-run single in the top of the ninth to extend his team's lead to four runs. It marked the second consecutive multi-hit effort for the third baseman and the fourth in his last eight games. Vientos also extended his hitting streak to 10 games with Thursday's performance, and he's now driven in at least one run in three straight.

  • Mets' Mark Vientos: Homers twice Thursday

Vientos went 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three total RBI in Thursday's 7-6 loss to the A's. Batting out of the two-hole for the first time this year, Vientos certainly made a case to stay at the top of the order -- the third baseman launched a two-run homer off Mitch Spence in the third inning before adding a solo shot off Michel Otanez in the fourth. Vientos had cooled off a bit after a hot start to his season. Thursday's performance was his first multi-hit game since July 26 -- he'd gone 10-for-50 (.200) in the following 15 contests heading into Thursday. Still, it's been an impressive campaign overall for Vientos, who's established himself as a regular in the Mets' lineup. He's now slashing .275/.333/.557 through 288 plate appearances with 19 homers, 48 RBI and 38 runs scored.

  • Mets' Mark Vientos: Sitting again Tuesday

Vientos (ankle) is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Athletics, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. The 24-year-old was a late scratch from Sunday's lineup against the Mariners due to left ankle soreness, and he'll sit for a second consecutive game Tuesday. According to Laura Albanese of Newsday, Vientos is expected to be available off the bench and should rejoin the lineup Wednesday. Jose Iglesias will receive a start at third base and bat seventh.

  • Mets' Mark Vientos: Out with ankle soreness

Vientos was scratched from the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners due to left ankle soreness, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The ankle issue has apparently been bothering Vientos since late July and cost him a start Aug. 5 against the Cardinals, but he had been part of the lineup in four of the Mets' subsequent five contests. Assuming Vientos isn't dealing with any sort of major setback with the ankle, he should have a good chance at returning to the lineup for Tuesday's series opener versus the Athletics following Monday's team off day.

Vientos (undisclosed) was scratched from Sunday's lineup against the Mariners, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Vientos was originally set to start at third base and bat eighth Sunday, but he's been scratched for an undisclosed reason. More information on his status will likely come in the near future, but in the meantime, Jose Iglesias will slide over to the hot corner while Ben Gamel enters the lineup in right field after some lineup shuffling.

  • Mets' Mark Vientos: Launches 17th homer

Vientos went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Thursday's win over the Rockies. The young third baseman took advantage of the thin air at Coors Field by taking Peter Lambert deep to left-center field in the fifth inning for his 17th long ball of the season. Vientos hasn't had a multi-hit performance since July 26, but he's been able to stay somewhat productive during that time, collecting three doubles, three homers and six RBI in 10 games despite a .184 batting average (7-for-38) and 2:12 BB:K.

The infielder is batting .294 (20-for-68) with three homers and 10 RBI over 18 contests in July as he continues to hold down a starting role at third base. For the year, he's slashing .290/.345/.545 with 13 homers, 35 RBI, 30 runs scored, 12 doubles and no stolen bases over 220 plate appearances.

Vientos gave New York a 3-0 lead with his two-run shot in the fourth inning, though Washington rallied late to claim victory. The long ball was Vientos' fifth over his past nine games, and he's also tallied 10 RBI during that span. The third baseman has taken hold of the primary hot corner role for the Mets with a strong stat line that includes a .297/.352/.579 slash, 11 home runs, 29 RBI and 26 runs over 159 plate appearances.

  • Mets' Mark Vientos: Goes yard twice against Yanks

Vientos went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in Tuesday's 9-7 win over the Yankees. The 24-year-old third baseman wasn't intimidated by the atmosphere in the Subway Series, or by the prospect of facing Gerrit Cole -- Vientos took the 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner deep in the second and fourth innings to help the Mets build an early 6-0 lead. He's homered four times in the last five games, and through 19 games in June, Vientos has compiled a .275/.329/.565 slash line with six long balls, 12 RBI and 14 runs.

  • Mets' Mark Vientos: Homers in loss

Vientos went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in a 10-5 loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Vientos hit a solo homer off Slade Cecconi in the fifth inning then singled and scored a run in the ninth. After posting three hits Friday, Vientos followed it up with another multi-hit effort that included his third home run in his past eight games. With Brett Baty being optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, it appears Vientos will have a chance to stake his claim at third base for the Mets. On the season, Vientos now has 10 home runs and 39 RBI in 190 plate appearances between Triple-A and the majors.

  • Mets' Mark Vientos: Looks like everyday third baseman

Vientos is expected to serve as the Mets' everyday third baseman after the club optioned Brett Baty to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Baty had started at third base in four of the Mets' previous five matchups versus right-handed pitchers, but the 24-year-old was unable to break out of his extended slump at the plate. He ends his time on the Mets' 26-man active roster having hit just .132 over his last 15 games, leaving Vientos as the big club's top option at the hot corner against both right- and left-handed pitching. Though he's an inferior defender compared to Baty, Vientos has been the far more effective hitter of the two at the big-league level this season, posting a .945 OPS over 48 plate appearances for the Mets. With Baty at least temporarily removed from the mix and a path to regular at-bats having been cleared up, Vientos makes for a worthy pickup for fantasy managers seeking an infusion of power.
