Player Outlook
Jackson Holliday had one of the most impressive full-season debuts any teenage prospect has had in modern memory, and the scary thing is he may just be scratching the surface. He still has a babyface and room to add 20 pounds of muscle in the coming years, but that didn't stop him from logging a .323/.442/.499 slash line with 12 home runs, 24 steals, a 17.4 BB% and a 20.3 K% while being between two and seven years younger than the average player in the leagues he was in while climbing from Single-A to Triple-A as a 19-year-old. His exit velocities aren't as intense as the other hitters in the top five of prospect rankings, but the expectation is that he will hit the ball harder as his body matures. Holliday is a plus runner who hits left-handed, which is important given how his future home park plays (much better for lefty power than righty power). His defense is behind his offense, but it's really hard to nitpick that aspect of his game when most premier teenage shortstop prospects haven't played a game in the upper levels of the minors and he played 36 games at Double-A and 18 games at Triple-A. It's possible Holliday comes to camp 15 pounds stronger and looks ready on both sides of the ball in spring training and forces the issue. However, there's little incentive for Baltimore to expedite Holliday's ascent to the majors if they think he could benefit from a couple months at Triple-A.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Swipes another bag

Holliday went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Rockies. Holliday has three steals this season, all of which have come over the last five games. The 20-year-old hadn't used his speed much earlier in the campaign, though that was partly due to rarely getting on base in his first stint in the majors. Holliday now has a .180/.235/.331 slash line with five home runs, 20 RBI, 24 runs scored, two doubles and two triples over his first 40 big-league games. The Orioles' laundry list of injuries will help Holliday stay in the lineup, but he'll likely remain at the bottom of the order unless his bat gets hot.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Flashes wheels in win

Holliday went 1-for-3 with a walk, a triple, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Friday's 5-3 win over the Rockies. In his first game at Coors Field, the place where his father Matt played the first five seasons of his career, Holliday made a big impression with his legs as he hit his second triple and stole his second bag in 38 MLB contests. The 20-year-old is still struggling to get comfortable in the majors -- Holliday hasn't had a multi-hit performance in 13 straight games, slashing just .122/.200/.195 over that stretch with a 3:15 BB:K. His ceiling remains sky high, but he's a risky fantasy option for the rest of 2024.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Logs first career steal

Holliday went 0-for-4 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Dodgers. Holliday reached on a fielder's choice and stole second in the fourth inning, earning his first major-league steal. Speed has been a small part of his game during his rapid ascent through the minors -- he swiped 36 bags over 218 minor-league contests, including eight thefts in 73 games at Triple-A Norfolk this year. A more pressing concern is his current slump at the plate, which has seen him go just 3-for-34 (.088) over 11 contests since a four-hit game Aug. 16. He's maintained a starting role at second base despite the slump, as the Orioles don't have much proven infield depth. Livan Soto or Emmanuel Rivera are the team's infield options, though Coby Mayo could also re-enter the mix when rosters expand Sept. 1. Jordan Westburg (hand) is not expected back until mid-September at the earliest.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Hits game-winning double

Holliday went 1-for-1 with a three-run double in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Astros. Holliday pinch hit for Emmanuel Rivera with the bases loaded in the sixth inning and cleared the bases on the first pitch he saw. It was much needed, as he was mired in a 1-for-23 slump after a four-hit game Aug. 16. While his season slash is still a miserable .175/.230/.342, the rookie has five home runs, 18 RBI and 14 runs scored across 86 plate appearances since being recalled July 31.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Resting Saturday

Holliday isn't in Baltimore's lineup Saturday versus the Astros. After going 0-for-19 at the plate over his last six games, Holliday will receive a day off Saturday to collect himself. Ramon Urias will shift to second base as a result, allowing Emmanuel Rivera to start at the hot corner and bat seventh.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Notches first four-hit game

Holliday went 4-for-5 with a triple, three runs scored and an RBI in Friday's 12-10 loss to the Red Sox. The Baltimore rookie collected his first career four-hit performance that included his first major-league triple, and he scored a career-high three runs. Since being recalled July 31, Holliday has batted .286 (16-for-35) with five homers, 13 runs scored and 14 RBI across 15 games. The 20-year-old should continue to play every day at second base for the Orioles as the team marches to the postseason and could move up in a potent batting order if he remains hot -- Holliday has yet to hit higher than sixth in the majors.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Goes yard again

Holliday went 2-for-4 with a solo home run during Sunday's 9-5 win over the Guardians. Holliday lifted his second home run of the season -- both of which have come in the last five days -- tagging Gavin Williams for a solo shot in the fifth frame. Holliday has logged multiple hits in three consecutive contests and has scored in all five games since being called up July 31.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Starting to play defense

Holliday (elbow) will begin playing partial games at second base for Triple-A Norfolk as part of his rehab progression, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports Friday. Holliday has exclusively played DH since being reinstated from the 7-day injured list June 25 after experiencing right elbow inflammation earlier that month, so this is a good sign he's nearly 100 percent healthy. The Orioles' top prospect, Holliday has a .898 OPS at Norfolk through 312 plate appearances.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Coming off IL

Triple-A Norfolk reinstated Holliday (elbow) from its 7-day injured list Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. As part of his recovery, Holliday will serve exclusively as a designated hitter for multiple weeks and refrain from throwing. The 20-year-old hasn't seen any big-league action since April and is slashing .259/.424/.455 with seven home runs and five steals over 245 plate appearances with Norfolk.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Benched against lefty

Holliday is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels. The lefty-hitting Holliday will take a seat for the second time in three days while the Angels bring another southpaw (Tyler Anderson) to the hill for the series finale. Jorge Mateo will check in at second base in place of Holliday, who is off to a 2-for-34 start to his big-league career since receiving a promotion from Triple-A Norfolk on April 10.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Sits against lefty

Holliday is out of the lineup Saturday against the Brewers. In his first game against a lefty (DL Hall), Holliday finds himself on the bench to begin the game. Jorge Mateo gets the start at second base, hitting ninth.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Will play second base this spring

Orioles general manager Mike Elias said in an interview on 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore on Tuesday that Holliday will play "a lot" of second base during spring training, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. The vast majority of Holliday's starts in the minors have come at shortstop, and that position is still likely to be the top prospect's long-term home. However, Holliday has also played some second and third base and there could be some starts available at the keystone. At the moment, Jordan Westburg looks to be at the top of Baltimore's depth chart at second base.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Will get opportunity to make roster

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Tuesday that Holliday will be given "every opportunity" to make the team's Opening Day roster, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. The statement echoes what general manager Mike Elias said earlier this offseason. Holliday, who just turned 20 this week, began the 2023 season at Low-A Delmarva and finished it at Triple-A Norfolk, slashing .323/.442/.499 with 12 homers over 125 games covering four stops. Baltimore has other options at shortstop, but they won't stand in Holliday's way if the youngster shows he's ready. The new CBA rules incentivizing carrying top prospects on the Opening Day roster could also help Holliday's chances.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Possible waiver wire pickups

The Diamondbacks gave Jordan Lawlar 16 games at Triple-A Reno before bringing him up to the big leagues, presumably just to make sure he didn't hit a brick wall at that last stop. Will Triple-A Norfolk likewise be just a layover for Jackson Holliday, the No. 1 pick in the draft last year and consensus No. 1 overall prospect now? Promoting him would be an aggressive move, but Holliday isn't a typical 19-year-old, being the son of seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday, and has experienced no letup in production at any of his previous three stops this year. Gunnar Henderson, who the Orioles aggressively promoted as a 21-year-old last September, is their only quality hitter on the left side of the infield. Filling that hole with Holliday as the team closes in on its first division title in a decade makes some sense. So does stashing him ahead of time if you can spare the roster spot.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Out several days with illness

Holliday will be sidelined several days at Double-A Bowie due to an illness, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Holliday has yet to be challenged at any level, including Bowie, where he's posted a .924 OPS in his first 10 games. He'll need a little breather to get well, though, before trying to finish strong in what is his first full pro season.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Moving up to Double-A

The Orioles promoted Holliday from High-A Aberdeen to Double-A Bowie on Sunday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. Baltimore is using the final day before the All-Star break to move several youngsters up a rung on the minor-league ladder, and no promotion is more significant than that of Holliday, the top prospect in the system and perhaps all of baseball. The 19-year-old is on the move for the second time this season, as he showed no signs of slowing down after making the jump to Aberdeen following a 14-game stint with Single-A Delmarva to begin the campaign. Despite being one of the younger hitters in the South Atlantic League, Holliday turned in a .314/.452/.502 slash line while walking at a 19.5 percent clip and striking out in 20.8 percent of his 259 plate appearances. The young shortstop was also a menace on the basepaths, notching 17 steals in 24 attempts.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Handling High-A

Holliday is slashing .359/.488/.612 with four home runs, nine steals, a 20.2 percent strikeout rate and a 19.4 percent walk rate in 29 games for High-A Aberdeen. Holliday wasted no time this season throwing his hat into the ring for best prospect in baseball, as he has now dominated Single-A (230 wRC+) and High-A (195 wRC+) and won't turn 20 until December. The most notable skill development for Holliday relative to preseason scouting reports is that he has been clocked as a plus-plus runner this year. He has stolen 12 bases on 17 attempts in 43 games and projects as a five-category superstar in the majors.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Getting first taste of A ball

Holliday has hit .194/.342/.226 through his first eight games for Single-A Delmarva. He played eight games in rookie ball before that and outclassed the competition, hitting .409/.576/.591 with a homer, three steals and a 10:2 BB:K. Although Single-A has been a greater challenge so far, it's obviously a small sample, and it helps that Holliday has continued to show impressive plate discipline (7:8 BB:K). The 2022 draft's first overall pick has as much upside as anyone in the minors.
