Tylor Megill technically didn't make the Mets' Opening Day roster in 2023, but he was immediately needed as an injury fill-in for Justin Verlander and wound up making 25 starts by the end of the season. The results were underwhelming, with Megill holding a 4.70 ERA and watching his strikeout rate plummet to 18.5 percent and walk rate rise to 10.2 percent. While he has above-average velocity, Megill's fastball was by far his most-used (55.7 percent) and least-effective (48.6 percent hard-hit rate, .408 xWOBA) pitch last season. There should be a little positive regression there in 2024, but Megill has yet to show the ability to be both healthy and effective over long periods of time. He'll probably have to compete in spring training for a spot in the Mets' rotation.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Fans six in third win

Megill (3-5) picked up the win in Friday's 5-1 win over the White Sox, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out six. Making his first big-league start since July 31, Megill got the softest possible opponent in the White Sox, but he took advantage to record his first MLB win since June 16. With Paul Blackburn (hand) sidelined into September and Christian Scott (elbow) just beginning to ramp back up, Megill figures to get at least one more start for the Mets as they try to stay in the wild-card race. The right-hander will take a 4.82 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 61:23 K:BB through 52.1 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Red Sox.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Officially called up for start

The Mets recalled Megill from Triple-A Syracuse to start Friday's game against the White Sox. As expected, Megill will fill the rotation spot vacated by Paul Blackburn (hand) and face off against the White Sox. In his last three starts for Syracuse, Megill has a 4.15 ERA with a 21:5 K:BB across 17.1 innings. He's logged a 5.17 ERA in 10 appearances (nine starts) with the Mets in 2024.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Named Friday's starter

Megill will be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to start Friday's game against the White Sox, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. With Paul Blackburn set to miss some time due to a hand injury, Megill is now set to come up from the minors to fill the open spot in New York's rotation. The 29-year-old righty owns a 5.17 ERA and 1.43 WHIP through 47 innings in the big leagues, though he will have the benefit of facing the White Sox in his first outing back, the team with the worst scoring offense in the majors.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Done in by long ball

Megill (2-5) took the loss Saturday as the Mets fell 4-0 to Atlanta, giving up four runs on five hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over six-plus innings. He struck out four. Making his first big-league start since June 29, Megill looked like he was headed for a pitchers' duel with rookie Spencer Schwellenbach until Marcell Ozuna and Matt Olson clubbed back-to-back solo shots in the fourth inning. Eddie Rosario would then help chase Megill from the game with a third solo blast to lead off the seventh. With Kodai Senga (calf) lost for the season and Christian Scott (elbow) lacking a clear return date, Megill will likely get an extended run in the rotation unless the Mets bring in help at the trade deadline. The right-hander hasn't made a strong case for the job however, posting a 5.20 ERA and 1.40 WHIP through nine MLB starts this season.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Recalled ahead of start

The Mets recalled Megill from Triple-A Syracuse ahead of his start Saturday versus Atlanta. With Christian Scott set to miss some time due to an elbow injury, Megill will now return to the majors in order to fill the opening in New York's rotation. The 28-year-old allowed 12 earned runs in 13.1 innings across his last three starts in the big leagues, but he has improved since moving to Triple-A (4.05 ERA in 13.1 IP) and will match up with an Atlanta offense that ranks 21st in MLB with 428 runs scored on the year. Kodai Senga (calf) was placed on the 15-day injured list.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Heading to Triple-A after rough start

The Mets are expected to option Megill to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Megill started Saturday's 9-6 loss to Houston, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts across 5.1 innings in a no-decision. As the Mets maneuver around Edwin Diaz's 10-game suspension, they're expected to call up a reliever to fill Megill's spot and eat innings in the coming days before having Christian Scott fill Megill's regular rotation slot. By rule, Megill will have to stay at Triple-A for 15 days, which means he likely won't be back on the active roster until after the All-Star break.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Picks up second win

Megill (2-3) pitched five innings to get the win Sunday vs the Padres. He gave up two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five. Megill worked around jams in the first and fifth innings to pick up his second win in his last three starts. The 28-year-old righty has struggled getting deep into games, as he's pitched more than five innings in only one of his six starts this season. Despite this, he's been a steadying presence in the Mets' rotation with a 3.52 ERA and 1.30 WHIP.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Fans eight in Tuesday's loss

Megill (1-3) took the loss Tuesday as the Mets were downed 4-2 by the Marlins, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out eight. The right-hander was dominant early, fanning eight of the first 14 batters he faced, but Megill faded in the fifth inning and got the hook after 87 pitches (57 strikes). He's been impressive in four starts since returning from a shoulder strain, posting a 3.32 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB through 21.2 innings. Megill will try to give the Mets a little more length in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Padres.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Notches first win

Megill (1-2) picked up the win Monday against Washington, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks. He struck out four in five innings of work. Megill made his third start since returning from a shoulder injury on May 20, notching his first win. The right-hander gave up his first home run of the season, a two-run shot by Joey Gallo in the fourth inning. Despite earning the win, the 28-year-old yielded four earned runs and recorded just four strikeouts, both season-worsts. Megill has now compiled a 3.00 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP and a 24:9 K:BB across 21 innings. He will look to improve in his next start, tentatively scheduled for next Tuesday versus Miami.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Returning to rotation Monday

Megill (shoulder) is scheduled to return from the 15-day injured list to start Monday's series opener versus the Guardians in Cleveland, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. After exiting in his season debut March 31 with a right shoulder strain and landing on the IL, Megill is finally ready to make his second start with the Mets nearly seven weeks later. According to Puma, Megill said the injury was caused by the lower arm slot he used on his curveball, but the right-hander reported no issues with throwing his breaking pitches during his four-start minor-league rehab assignment. Megill most recently tossed 5.1 shutout innings and 74 pitches in his final rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on May 12, so he's not expected to be under any major workload restrictions as he steps back into the big-league rotation.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Sharp again Sunday in rehab start

Megill (shoulder) struck out six while giving up seven hits and no walks over 5.1 scoreless innings in his rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday. In what could be the right-hander's final rehab start, Megill built up to 74 pitches (55 strikes) as he dominated Lehigh Valley. Over four rehab appearances, Megill has an eye-popping 23:1 K:BB over 14 innings while allowing just one run. There's no clear vacancy in the big-league rotation at the moment with Christian Scott getting promoted from Triple-A earlier this month, but the Mets could go with a six-man rotation in the short term, as they don't get a day off until May 23. If he stays on turn, Megill would get activated from the 15-day injured list Friday for a road start against the Marlins.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Pitches well in rehab start

Megill (shoulder) struck out seven over four scoreless, no-hit innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday. Megill issued one walk and threw 62 pitches over his four frames. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza had indicated previously that Tuesday could represent Megill's final rehab start, and he certainly looks to have passed the test. However, whether he'll go back into the Mets rotation or remain at Syracuse hasn't yet been determined. The Mets could use a six-man rotation for a while, or Megill could replace Jose Butto, who is starting Tuesday for the big club.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Builds up to 51 pitches

Megill (shoulder) threw 2.2 innings in a rehab start for Double-A Binghamton on Thursday, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out four without walking a batter. While the outing seems short, Megill threw 51 pitches in his second rehab appearance after firing two perfect innings for Binghamton on April 27. The Mets are moving to a six-man rotation in the short term by bringing up top prospect Christian Scott on Saturday, but Megill's current schedule has him in sync with Jose Butto rather than struggling fifth starter Adrian Houser. Megill will make at least one more rehab start, and his 10:0 K:BB through 4.2 innings against Double-A hitters suggests he's already 100 percent stuff-wise, but New York may not be in a rush to activate the 28-year-old righty if there's no obvious vacancy for him in the rotation.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Hits IL with shoulder strain

The Mets placed Megill on the 15-day injured list Monday with a right shoulder strain. Megill was diagnosed with the injury after he was forced out following four innings in his first start of the season in Sunday's loss to the Brewers. A precise timeline for Megill's return hasn't yet been established, but given that his injury is being labeled as a strain rather than soreness, he appears likely to miss more than the minimum 15 days. The Mets recalled Reed Garrett from Triple-A Syracuse to give the team a fresh relief arm in the short term, but the team will need to find a replacement when Megill's next turn through the rotation comes up this weekend in Cincinnati.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Nursing shoulder issue

Megill (0-1), who took the loss Sunday against the Brewers, was removed after four innings due to "tenderness" in his right shoulder and will undergo an MRI, Steve Gelbs of SNY reports. The right-hander struck out four and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks. The 28-year-old was in and out of trouble all afternoon as he threw just 44 of his 78 pitches for strikes, but he was able to limit the damage before the shoulder injury prompted his exit. The Mets are already shorthanded for starting pitching with Kodai Senga (shoulder) on the injured list, and Megill's availability for his next turn through the rotation is now up in the air.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Keeps building up Monday

Megill allowed one run on three hits over four innings in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. He struck out two without walking a batter. Aside from a second-inning solo shot by Tim Anderson, Megill looked sharp once again as he built up to 61 pitches (36 strikes). With Kodai Senga (shoulder) beginning the season on the IL, Megill appears ticketed for an Opening Day rotation spot, and he's earned it with an impressive 15:2 K:BB over 12 spring innings.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Solid spring debut

Megill gave up a run on two hits and struck out three over two innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. After a shaky first inning that saw him plunk Brendan Donovan to lead off the game before uncorking a wild pitch, Megill breezed through a 1-2-3 second frame. The right-hander came into camp looking to win the Mets' No. 5 starter role, but Kodai Senga's shoulder strain has opened up a second spot in the Opening Day rotation. Megill endured a rough 2023, but he worked on adding a splitter to his arsenal in the offseason and could offer more strikeout upside than the likes of Joey Lucchesi and Jose Butto, his main competition in the rotation battle.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Notches ninth win

Megill (9-8) picked up the win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Phillies, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over 7.1 innings. He struck out seven. The right-hander saved his best performance of the season for last, as he hadn't worked more than six innings in any start this season. The quality start was Megill's sixth of 2023, but half of them have come in his last six outings -- a stretch in which he posted a 2.55 ERA and 31:12 K:BB through 35.1 innings. The impressive finish to the campaign should make the 28-year-old a favorite to secure an Opening Day rotation spot with the Mets in 2024, provided the team doesn't engage in another winter spending spree.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Punches out six in no-decision

Megill did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out six. Megill was cruising through five scoreless innings before running out of steam in the sixth, and his potential scoreless outing was undone by a J.T. Realmuto three-run homer. The 28-year-old righty has struggled to the tune of a 4.92 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 98:56 K:BB over 119 innings this season. Megill, who has gone at least five innings in five straight starts but has just one win in that span to show for it, is currently scheduled to make his last start of the year against the Phillies at home.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Tosses five scoreless frames

Megill allowed two hits and four walks over five shutout innings in Sunday's win over the Twins. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. Megill faced some issues with his command but was able to work around a couple of threats to turn in five clean frames. He was locked into a duel with Minnesota's Pablo Lopez, and the Mets weren't able to break the scoreless tie until the ninth inning. Megill has allowed three or fewer runs in five straight outings, posting a 3.12 ERA during that span and lowering his season mark to 5.03. His next start is currently projected to be at home against the Reds.
