Player Outlook
Noelvi Marte's outlook changed completely in March when he was suspended 80 games for PEDs. He remains prospect-eligible after logging just 114 at-bats last season, and in that time he showed off his exciting combination of power (115.6-mph maxEV, 46.1 HardHit%), aggressiveness on the bases (6-for-8 on SB attempts) and ability to put the ball in play (77.5 Contact%). His 52.8 GB% was uncharacteristically high (45.8 GB% at Double-A, 41.6 GB% at Triple-A), and if that normalizes, he could eventually hit 25 homers in his first full season. Marte's home park, strikeout rate and stolen-base output give him a rare combination of a high floor and a high ceiling long term. Scouts were lukewarm on his defense at the hot corner while he was in the minors and that was the weakest part of his game in his big-league debut. He can make highlight plays, but it's possible he eventually moves to left field, although that probably wouldn't happen in 2024.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Absent from Cincinnati lineup

Marte is not in the lineup for Monday's contest against the Astros. He's fallen into a bit of a timeshare at third base with Santiago Espinal, who will start at the hot corner Monday. Marte had started each of the previous three games while Espinal was banged up, but Espinal was in the lineup for the three contests prior to that.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Resting Thursday

Marte isn't in the Reds' lineup for Thursday's game against the Athletics. Marte will sit down for a second consecutive game after going 7-for-21 with a homer and two RBI across his last six contests. While he rests, Santiago Espinal will start at third base with Will Benson manning right field.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Taking seat Wednesday

Marte is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics. Marte has struggled mightily at the plate overall since completing his 80-game suspension to begin the season and joining the Reds in late June, though his bat has been starting to come around lately. Over his last six contests, Marte has gone 7-for-21 with a home run and two stolen bases, bringing his batting average back to the Mendoza Line (.200) on the season. Despite the recent surge, Marte will cede his spot at third base to the even hotter-hitting Santiago Espinal, who has pushed his way into an everyday role for the Reds while seeing action at a number of different positions.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Absent from lineup

Marte is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against Pittsburgh. For the month of August, Marte is slashing .230/.242/.377 with seven runs scored, two home runs, five RBI and a 32.3 percent strikeout rate over 62 plate appearances. Santiago Espinal is starting at third base and batting eighth.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Returns to lineup Tuesday

Marte started at third base and went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Tuesday's 10-3 loss to Toronto. Marte tied the game in the second inning after the Blue Jays jumped to an early lead. The third baseman returned to the lineup after sitting out the previous two games. The drop in playing time is the direct result of his struggles at the plate -- Marte entered the game batting .181 over 40 games -- but Jeimer Candelario's placement on the injured list with a toe injury seems likely to keep Marte in the regular lineup for the time being.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: On bench Monday

Marte is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays. After starting in 13 of the Reds' previous 14 games, Marte is absent from the lineup for a second straight game. Santiago Espinal will bat ninth and play the hot corner Monday. Marte has two hits and eight strikeouts in his last 20 at-bats.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Goes yard in win

Marte went 1-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Monday's 10-3 win over the Marlins. Marte swatted a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give the Reds a 6-0 lead. It was his third home run of the season and first in 10 games. Marte, who entered the game with a .168 average, batted ninth for the second time in three games and has gradually moved down the order from the fifth spot when he first returned from an 80-game suspension in late June.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Back in starting lineup

Marte started at third base and went 0-for-3 in Saturday's 6-4 win over San Francisco. Marte, who was held out of the starting lineup the last two games, returned to action Saturday, but the bat remained problematic. He has just two hits over the last 19 at-bats and is batting .172 for the season.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Not in Friday's lineup

Marte is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Giants. It's the second straight game on the bench for Marte, who has a .177/.231/.281 slash line and 30.8 percent strikeout rate in 104 plate appearances since returning from his 80-game PED suspension in late June. Santiago Espinal will receive another start at third base Friday and could continue to cut into Marte's playing time after finishing July with a 1.184 OPS in 16 games.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Moving to bench Wednesday

Marte is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs. Now more than a month removed from returning to the Cincinnati lineup June 27 after completing his 80-game suspension to begin the season, Marte still has yet to get going at the plate. He enters Wednesday's contest with a .177/.223/.281 slash line and a 31.1 percent strikeout rate over 103 plate appearances. The Reds still seem committed to Marte as their everyday third baseman, but with the 22-year-old hitting the bench for the second time in the last four games, his leash may be getting shorter.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Not in Sunday's lineup

Marte is out of the lineup for Sunday's game at Tampa Bay. Marte started Cincinnati's first seven games of the second half but will sit Sunday after hitting .192 with a .592 OPS during that span. Santiago Espinal will receive a start at the hot corner in the series finale versus the Rays.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Plates two in win

Marte went 1-for-5 with a double and two RBI in Wednesday's 9-4 win over Atlanta. Marte joined the Reds' party with a two-run double in the fourth inning. The struggling third baseman, who is batting .181 since he completed his 80-game PED suspension, has hit safely in four straight games (4-for-17).

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Three hits, two runs in loss

Marte went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in Wednesday's 6-5 loss to the Rockies. This was Marte's first multi-hit effort since his season debut June 27. The infielder is batting just .176 with one home run, six RBI, eight runs scored, two doubles and two stolen bases over 54 plate appearances. Marte is likely still working some things out on the fly after opening the year with an 80-game suspension, but he continues to see consistent playing time at third base amid his struggles.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Reinstated from suspension

The Reds activated Marte from the suspended list Thursday. Marte has completed his 80-game PED suspension and the Reds will return him to their active roster on the first day he's eligible. The 22-year-old struggled mightily while on his rehab assignment, slashing just .151/.151/.170 with no home runs and a 15:0 K:BB over 53 plate appearances. Fantasy managers might be wise to keep Marte out of their lineups for now while he knocks some rust off, but the infielder should be rostered virtually everywhere. He should operate as the Reds' primary third baseman.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Struggling on rehab assignment

The Reds haven't yet committed to activating Marte (suspension) when he's first eligible to return to the big club June 27, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Reds manager David Bell professes not to be paying attention to Marte's numbers during his rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville as he continues the ramp-up process. Through the first 10 games of his assignment, Marte is hitting .156/.156/.178 with no walks and 13 strikeouts. If Marte can get back up to speed, the Reds could really use him both offensively and defensively at third base.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Set to begin rehab assignment

Reds manager David Bell said Monday that Marte (suspension) is scheduled to begin his rehab assignment June 11, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Marte is nearing the end of his 80-game suspension due to violating MLB's joint drug prevention and treatment program. After ramping up his activity in the Dominican Republic, Marte will travel to the United States and will likely begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville, per Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. Bell noted that Marte will mostly play third base in his assignment, but the 22-year-old will also get some reps at shortstop and second base. Marte is eligible to return from his suspension June 27.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Ramping up in Dominican Republic

Marte (suspension) recently reported to the Reds' facility in the Dominican Republic to continue participating in exhibition games before the start of the Dominican Summer League, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Marte is continuing to serve the 80-game suspension he was handed down in March for violating MLB's joint drug prevention and treatment program, but he's been able to stay in playing shape of late by appearing in extended spring training games in Arizona and now in the Dominican Republic. According to team president Nick Krall, the Reds plan to have Marte participate in games in the Dominican Republic for about a week to 10 days before he returns to the United States to begin an official rehab assignment in the minors. Marte, who hit .316 with three home runs and six stolen bases in 35 games for the Reds in 2023 following his late-season promotion to the big leagues, is eligible to make his 2024 debut for the big club June 27 in St. Louis.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Getting live at-bats in Arizona

Marte has been able to play in exhibition games in Arizona during his suspension, per Reds Daily. The Reds Daily X account posted a video of Marte grounding out in an at-bat against Dodgers minor leaguers at a spring training complex in Arizona. Marte won't be playing in any official minor-league games with tracked statistics, but he has still been able to work on maintaining his timing at the dish. He is eligible to return from his suspension June 19, which is also around the time Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist) is expected to return from the injured list.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Makes spring debut

Marte started at third base and went 1-for-2 in Saturday's spring game against the Rockies. Marte made his spring debut after coping with a hamstring injury that delayed his participation in game action. He hit a couple of balls hard and told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com that he felt comfortable before he was removed in the fourth inning. "It was good to have Marte back, he looked good," manager David Bell said. "We didn't want to do anything crazy on the bases, but he was 100 percent. He's completely freed up to play his normal game next time out." Marte should have enough time to build up for Opening Day and is projected to be the Reds' primary third baseman.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Cleared for spring debut Saturday

Marte (hamstring) will make his Cactus League debut Saturday against the Rockies, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Marte has been brought along methodically this spring after suffering a Grade 2 hamstring strain in late November while playing in the Dominican Winter League. There is still time for the 22-year-old to ramp up before Opening Day, but the delayed start to his spring won't help his chances of nailing down a regular role at third base.
