Player Outlook
Expectations shouldn't be too lofty for Sutton even after his 2023 season when he scored 10 touchdowns. That's because Sutton failed to average even six targets per game in Denver's conservative offense and figures to be limited again in his opportunities in 2024. It doesn't help that Sutton missed offseason workouts over a contract dispute, nor is it a positive that he'll catch passes from a rookie -- even one that comes with a lot of collegiate experience like Bo Nix. Here's the reality: Sutton hasn't popped for over 12 PPR points per game since 2019, and even then it was 13.9. Unless Sutton's situation changes, think of him as a low-end No. 3 Fantasy receiver at best worth grabbing in the middle rounds.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Significant role on tap in 2024

Sutton is set to be the Broncos' unquestioned No. 1 wide receiver for the 2024 campaign and has made improvements to his game this offseason, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports. Entering the 2024 season, Sutton is on track to operate as Denver's top receiver while serving as a reliable target for rookie quarterback Bo Nix. According to Kosmider, the veteran pass catcher often "looked like Nix's security blanket at times during training camp." A developing connection between Sutton and Nix would serve the 28-year-old wideout well for fantasy purposes, as his elevated role in the offense should lead to consistent opportunities. Head coach Sean Payton understands Sutton's impact on the Broncos' success, stating "I would say he is important, and I think he knows that." While becoming more comfortable in Payton's system, the 6-foot-4, 216-pounder has worked to fine-tune his technique as a receiver, stating "I feel like this year, so far, I have been seeing so much more of an improvement in my route detail and my route technique." Based on his skill development and comfort within the scheme, Sutton figures to be a key piece of Denver's passing attack this season.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Links up with Nix for 23-yard catch

Sutton caught his only target for 23 yards in Sunday's 27-2 preseason win over the Packers. Sutton's lone contribution came on the team's second drive, as rookie quarterback Bo Nix connected with the veteran wide receiver to get down to the four-yard line. Nix threw a touchdown pass to Tim Patrick two plays later. Sutton's set to operate as the top target for whomever plays under center for the Broncos come the regular season, and he's unlikely to get significant playing time in next Sunday's preseason finale against the Cardinals. While Nix has yet to be officially named the starter for Week 1, all signs seem to be pointing that way given how well the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has played in the preseason.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Catches passes from two QBs

Sutton caught two of three passes for 35 yards in Sunday's 34-30 preseason win over the Colts. Sutton caught one pass apiece from Jarrett Stidham and Bo Nix, as both quarterbacks got a chance to work with Denver's first-team offense. The Broncos' wide receiver depth chart is unsettled behind Sutton, but the five-time 700-yard receiver is poised to operate as the team's top option in the passing game after hashing out a contract dispute earlier in the offseason. Nix is expected to start the next preseason game against the Packers, and Sutton will likely play with the rookie first-round pick as they look to build chemistry prior to the regular season.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Set to play in preseason opener

Sutton is warming up to play with the first-team offense ahead of Sunday's preseason opener against the Colts, Ryan McFadden of The Denver Post reports. Most of the Broncos' starters are slated to play in the team's first preseason contest, though they're unlikely to see more than a series or two. Sutton is looking to build a rapport with a new QB this season, as Russell Wilson has headed off to Pittsburgh. Jarrett Stidham is making the start behind center Sunday, while rookie Bo Nix is lined up to start next Sunday versus Green Bay. It's not yet clear which of the two signal-callers will start Week 1 of the regular season, so Sutton will look to establish chemistry with both as the exhibition slate progresses.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Gets contract restructure

Sutton and the Broncos agreed Thursday to restructure his contract, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Sutton previously was scheduled for $13.6 million and $14 million in the final two years of his contract. There was talk of a training camp holdout, but it never seemed especially likely and the Broncos have now placated their No. 1 receiver by adding $1.5 million in incentives for the upcoming season, per Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette. While TD regression is highly likely after Sutton scored on 10 of his 90 targets last year, he can make up for it with added volume in other areas of the field. The Broncos had a highly unusual offensive distribution last year, ranking 27th in pass attempts (513) but first in RB targets (153).

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Slated to participate in camp

Coach Sean Payton noted Tuesday that Sutton will "be here and ready to go" for training camp Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette reports. There had been some speculation that Sutton's contract status could impact his training camp participation, but it appears as though Denver's top wide receiver will join his teammates once practices commence. With Jerry Jeudy in Cleveland, Sutton could be in line for bigger volume in the Broncos' passing game given the lack of reliable, established options behind him on the depth chart.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: May still consider holdout

Sutton is still unhappy with his contract and suggested Tuesday that he might consider holding out from training camp, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports. It would be unusual for a player to report to June minicamp (the first mandatory team activities of the year) and then hold out for the start of training camp. Sutton revealed earlier this week that he had minor ankle surgery in the offseason and was away from the team during OTAs as a result, but it sounds like displeasure with his contract may also have been a factor. While most of his Tuesday comments reflected optimism about eventually reaching an agreement, Sutton also said negotiations "are at a stalemate in a sense." He has two years remaining on his contract, scheduled for $13.6 million in compensation this season ($2 million) and $14 million next year (none guaranteed). Sutton's comments suggest he wants a contract extension, but it won't be shocking if he ultimately settles for an adjustment that adds guaranteed money without adding years. Meanwhile, there's no indication of his ankle still being a problem.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: To attend minicamp

Sutton said Thursday he will attend Denver's mandatory minicamp after having skipped voluntary OTAs, Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post reports. Sutton trained privately and away from the team during OTAs, but he'll be present for the start of mandatory offseason activities next week. The wideout still appears to desire a new contract, as only $2 million is guaranteed of the roughly $27.6 million remaining on his current deal, which ties him with the Broncos for the next two season. Following the trade of Jerry Jeudy to the Browns earlier this offseason, Sutton is positioned as the clear top target for whoever starts at QB this season, making him an especially key factor for Denver's offense. Behind Sutton on the depth chart are Josh Reynolds, Marvin Mims, Tim Patrick (Achilles) and Troy Franklin.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Not at voluntary OTAs

Sutton (ankle) wants a new contract and hasn't reported to voluntary OTAs, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Sutton has two seasons remaining on a four-year, $60 million extension, scheduled for a $13 million base salary in 2024 ($2 million guaranteed) and then $13.5 million in 2025 (no guarantees). He scored a career-high 10 touchdowns in 16 games last season, though 90 targets were his fewest since 2020 -- the year he suffered an ACL tear Week 1 -- and he still hasn't come close to matching his career-high 1,112 yards from 2019. The 28-year-old won't necessarily hold out from mandatory team activities later this spring, but the situation is at least worth keeping an eye on until he gets an extension or contract adjustment, or otherwise reports to the Broncos. There's been no indication of his Week 18 ankle injury lingering into the offseason, with the main concern at this point being the lack of a starting-caliber QB on Denver's roster. The team also appears thin at wide receiver, where the starting job across from Sutton could end up going to any of Josh Reynolds, Marvin Mims, Tim Patrick (Achilles) or Brandon Johnson.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Catches one pass in loss

Sutton played 28 snaps on offense and caught one of four targets for two yards in Sunday's 27-14 loss to the Raiders before departing with an ankle injury. Though the ankle injury spelled an early end to his final appearance of the season, the veteran wideout will presumably be fully healthy for Denver's offseason program. Sutton finished the 2023 campaign with team highs in both catches (59) and receiving yards (772) while also scoring a career-high 10 touchdowns in 16 appearances. The 28-year-old operated as the team's No. 1 receiver and a focal point of their passing game, leading Denver with 90 targets and 48.3 receiving yards per game. Sutton's fantasy outlook heading into 2024 will hinge on how Denver elects to address the quarterback position, as the team is expected to part ways with Russell Wilson in the offseason.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Injures ankle Sunday

Sutton exited Sunday's game against the Raiders due to an ankle injury, Ryan McFadden of The Denver Post reports. Prior to being forced out of the contest, Sutton had caught one of his four targets for two yards. While he is sidelined, Jerry Jeudy, Marvin Mims, Brandon Johnson and Lil'Jordan Humphrey are available to handle the Broncos' Week 18 wideout duties.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Practices fully Thursday

Sutton (concussion) was a full participant in practice Thursday. Sutton sat out the Broncos' Week 17 win over the Chargers after suffering a concussion in a Week 16 loss to New England, but he appears to be working toward a return to action for this Sunday's season finale in Las Vegas. After practicing in limited fashion Wednesday, Sutton demonstrated progress by taking every rep Thursday, indicating that he's been cleared for contact. Before getting the green light to play Sunday, Sutton will still need to get clearance from an independent neurologist prior to being removed from the five-step concussion protocol, something that could happen Friday or Saturday.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Returns to limited practice

Sutton (concussion) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports. Sutton didn't practice at all last week before being ruled out ahead of Broncos' Week 17 win over the Chargers. The wideout's return to a limited session Wednesday has him trending in the right direction ahead of Sunday's season finale against the Raiders, but with Denver eliminated from playoff contention, the team has little incentive to play Sutton this weekend if there's any doubt about his status as game day approaches.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Ruled out for Week 17

Coach Sean Payton said Friday that Sutton (concussion) won't play Sunday against the Chargers, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports. Sutton departed in the first half of this past Sunday's loss to the Patriots and eventually was diagnosed with a concussion. He proceeded to miss practice both Wednesday and Thursday before the Broncos made a decision on his availability for Week 17. With Sutton sitting out Sunday, the Broncos' receiving corps should be paced by Jerry Jeudy, with Brandon Johnson, Lil'Jordan Humphrey and potentially Marvin Mims (hamstring) mixing in behind him.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Misses another practice

Sutton (concussion) remained sidelined at practice Thursday, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports. Sutton thus has one more chance to practice ahead of Sunday's game against the Chargers. If he's unable to gain clearance to play this weekend, Jerry Jeudy, Marvin Mims (hamstring), Brandon Johnson and Lil'Jordan Humphrey would profile as quarterback Jarrett Stidham's top targets at receiver in Week 17.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Not able to practice

Sutton (concussion) didn't practice Wednesday, Ryan McFadden of The Denver Post reports. Sutton's absence was to be expected less than 72 hours after he suffered a concussion in the first half of Sunday's 26-23 loss to the Patriots. If he clears the five-step concussion protocol ahead of this weekend's game against the Chargers, Sutton will be on the receiving end of passes from Jarrett Stidham rather than Russell Wilson, who has been moved to the bench for Denver's final two games of the season.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Enters concussion protocol

Head coach Sean Payton confirmed after Sunday's 26-23 loss to the Patriots that Sutton is in concussion protocol, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports. Sutton was forced out early in the first half and didn't return, finishing the contest with zero catches on one target over just nine snaps. The wideout will now have six days to potentially clear the five-step protocol ahead of the Broncos' Week 17 game Dec. 31 versus the Chargers.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Undergoing concussion check

Sutton is being evaluated for a possible head injury, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports. No further details were immediately available, but it remains to be seen if Sutton will return to Sunday's contest. His status will be updated again when more details are available.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: Records 71 yards

Sutton recorded five receptions on six targets for 71 yards in Saturday's 42-17 loss to the Lions. Sutton has been productive primarily by reaching the end zone this season. While he failed to do so Saturday, he led the team in receptions and tallied four catches that went for double-digit gains. Sutton's performance marked the fourth time he's topped 70 yards this season but for only the second time in six games since Denver's Week 9 bye.

  • Broncos' Courtland Sutton: WRs to Start

Sutton got back in the end zone in Week 13 at Houston after failing to score a touchdown in Week 12 against Cleveland, and he's now scored a touchdown in six of his past seven games, with nine touchdowns on the year. He should have the chance to score again in Week 14 at the Chargers, who are No. 3 in most Fantasy points allowed to opposing receivers. Russell Wilson should continue to lean on Sutton in this matchup, and he has top-15 upside in the majority of leagues.
