The last two British Open winners were atop the Open Championship leaderboard entering the weekend, which could spell positive news for 2024 Open Championship leader Shane Lowry. Already with an Open win on his resume (2019), Lowry (-7) has shot over par on just two of 36 holes so far and owns a two-stroke lead over Daniel Brown and Justin Rose. Sitting five shots back are three golfers, including World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, while major winners Xander Schauffele and Jason Day are six back at 1-under-par entering Round 3 of The Open 2024.

Lowry is the +185 favorite in the latest 2024 Open Championship odds entering the weekend. Scheffler, who held at least a share of the lead entering the weekend in both of his Masters wins, is +330. Other contenders to utilize in 2024 British Open bets could include Rose (+650) and Schauffele (+1000), while longshots consist of Collin Morikawa (+3000) and Jon Rahm (+3000). Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 13 majors entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters, its third Masters in a row, and this year's PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Top 2024 Open Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Open Championship over the weekend: Shane Lowry (+185), the favorite and current leader, stumbles and fails to hold on for the victory. Despite his play thus far, and winning the 2019 British Open, this tournament has actually been where Lowry has struggled the most amongst the four majors. He has more missed cuts at The Open than any other major, despite competing in it the second-fewest times. He missed the cut at last year's Open Championship, while Royal Troon got the best of him in his last appearance here, also missing the cut in 2016.

The Irishman also hasn't recently proven that he can hold on for a tournament win as that 2019 Open win remains his last individual event win on the PGA Tour. He's a phenomenal ball-striker, but a golfer is only as good as his putter, and that has frequently let Lowry down. He ranks outside the top 100 on tour in strokes gained: putting, total putting and overall putting average. Those deficiencies are bound to catch up to him at some point, and the model sees this weekend as when they will do so. See who else to fade here.

Another surprise: Collin Morikawa, a +3000 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has already made strong runs at major titles this season as he's one of just three golfers with top 15s in each of the year's first three majors. Morikawa has also proven his mettle at the British Open as he won the event in his debut here in 2021. Additionally, if it wasn't for the historic run that Scheffler's been on, then Morikawa would be getting more attention with his recent play. He entered this tournament with nine straight finishes in the top 16 in individual events, including six of those being top 10s.

Over his last 12 weekend rounds of golf -- a span which includes two majors -- Morikawa has shot par or better in 11 of those rounds. He's as complete a golfer as there is, with top-10 rankings on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: total, driving accuracy percentage, putting average and birdie average. After shooting 3-under-par over his last eight holes before leaving Royal Troon on Friday, Morikawa should enter the weekend with confidence and has a realistic shot to rise up the leaderboard. See who else to back here.

The model is also targeting four other golfers with odds of 30-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here.
