Padres' Yu Darvish: Confirmed for Wednesday start
Darvish (elbow) will be reinstated from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday against the Tigers, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Darvish has been sidelined since May 29 but threw 66 pitches in a sim game against minor leaguers Friday. He followed that up with a bullpen session Monday, leaving him in line to return versus Detroit. Darvish hasn't seen game action since a rehab appearance June 19, and it's unclear what type of workload restrictions he may have imposed on him.

Padres' Yu Darvish: Tracking toward return Wednesday
Darvish (elbow) is expected to rejoin the Padres' rotation Wednesday against the Tigers, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Darvish threw 66 pitches in a simulated game against minor leaguers last Friday and followed that up with a bullpen session Monday. The Padres have not yet confirmed that Darvish is in line to return Wednesday, but things appear to be pointing in that direction. Darvish hasn't made a start for the Padres since late May and his one rehab start came back on June 19, so it would not be a surprise if there's some rust Wednesday.

Padres' Yu Darvish: Hurls 66 pitches vs. minor leaguers
Darvish (personal/elbow) threw 66 pitches over four innings Friday in a controlled game against Cincinnati minor leaguers, Bernie Wilson of the Associated Press reports.
Darvish continues to ramp up as he looks to return from an absence of over three months, initially due to an elbow injury and then because of a personal matter. The veteran right-hander threw on his own for a period while he was away from the team, and he's since tossed a bullpen and a sim game in addition to Friday's outing against minor leaguers, so he's not as far off as a starting pitcher might typically be after such a long absence. Per Wilson, Darvish felt fine following Friday's controlled game, but Darvish's next steps are yet to be determined.

Padres' Yu Darvish: Throws simulated game
Padres manager Mike Shildt said Monday on 97.3 The Fan that Darvish (elbow) threw a simulated game Sunday which included three "up and downs."
Shildt added that Darvish recovered well from the session and the next step will either be another simulated game or perhaps a rehab start. Darvish was recently shifted from the restricted list back to the 15-day injured list, but he's considered healthy and it's all about rebuilding his stamina at this point. There should be more clarity on a potential timetable later this week.

Padres' Yu Darvish: Throws bullpen, feeling healthy
Darvish (elbow) threw a 27-pitch bullpen Friday and said he's feeling healthy, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Darvish was activated from the restricted list Friday after dealing with a personal matter back home, and he was shifted to the 15-day injured list once he rejoined the Padres in San Diego. He continued to throw while he was away from the team and was able to build up to 27 pitches Friday. Darvish also said Friday that he's feeling good and his placement on the IL was just "a matter of ramping up." San Diego has a hole to fill in its rotation after optioning Matt Waldron to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday, but Darvish won't be able to step into that role until September.

Darvish (personal/elbow) was reinstated from the restricted list and returned to the 15-day injured list Friday.
While Darvish will rejoin the Padres in San Diego on Friday, he'll still have some hurdles to clear before rejoining the active roster. The right-hander hasn't pitched since May 29 after sustaining a left groin strain. He's had his recovery delayed twice, experiencing elbow inflammation right before his expected activation in late June and then going on the restricted list July 6 as he dealt with a personal matter. The 37-year-old has been throwing on his own and even threw a live batting practice session at a San Diego-area high school Aug. 12, but it's unclear how close he might be to coming off the IL.

Padres' Yu Darvish: Throwing on own, could return
Darvish (personal) has yet to rejoin the Padres since landing on the restricted list July 6, but he has been working out and throwing on his own and most recently tossed a live batting practice session at a San Diego-area high school Sunday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Darvish hasn't pitched for the Padres since May 29, as he first landed on the injured list with a left groin strain, then made a rehab start June 17 with High-A Fort Wayne before experiencing minor elbow inflammation. He had resumed his throwing program before he stepped away from the team in early July to tend to the personal matter, and neither injury is believed to be a concern at this point. While the veteran righty hasn't informed the Padres whether he plans to return to the team in 2024, the fact that he's been ramping up his throwing would seem to suggest that he intends to come back this season. The Padres are likely to remain mum on Darvish's situation until he formally rejoins the club, but his potential late-season return would provide a significant boost to a surging squad that now finds itself within striking distance of the Dodgers for the division lead. Over his first 11 starts this season before going on the IL and then the restricted list, Darvish went 4-3 with a 3.20 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 53:15 K:BB in 56.1 innings.
