  • Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly: On track to face hitters soon

Kelly (shoulder) is expected to throw two more bullpen sessions before facing hitters, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Kelly is slated to throw off the bump Saturday and is expected to require one additional bullpen session before being cleared to face hitters. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Friday that the right-hander is "feeling really, really good." Kelly is been limited to just four starts this season with a right shoulder strain and will need plenty of more time to ramp things back up, but the recent reports on his progress have been positive.

  • Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: On track to return early next week

Montgomery (knee) is on track to rejoin the Diamondbacks' rotation early next week in Kansas City after completing a three-inning, 56-pitch simulated game Thursday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Montgomery has been shelved since late June with right knee inflammation, but a return is right around the corner. He will skip a rehab assignment, with the Diamondbacks deeming a trio of simulated games enough to get the veteran left-hander ramped back up. Montgomery holds a disappointing 6.44 ERA in 13 starts for Arizona this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Joc Pederson: Absent versus left-hander

Pederson is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs.

The Cubs are sending southpaw Justin Steele to the hill, so the left-handed hitting Pederson will begin the first game of the second half on the bench. Randal Grichuk will handle designated hitter duties.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Set to start opener versus Cubs

Nelson will start Arizona's series opener on the road against the Cubs on Friday, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Nelson will get the ball first as the Diamondbacks come out of the All-Star break, carrying a 4.98 ERA and 6.1 K/9 over 86.2 innings in 17 appearances, including 15 starts, this season. With Jordan Montgomery (knee) returning to the rotation this week and Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder) and Merrill Kelly (shoulder) on the horizon, Nelson may need to impress in his next few starts to solidify his spot in the team's starting rotation.

  • Diamondbacks' Connor Foley: Scooped by Snakes

The Diamondbacks have selected Foley with the 164th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Foley is a 6-foot-5 righty from Indiana who has touched 99 mph in the past. He sits around 93-95 mph with his fastball as a starter while mixing in average secondary pitches in his slider and changeup. Foley struggles to throw strikes, which could lead to him being moved to the bullpen eventually.

  • Diamondbacks' Tytus Cissell: Falls to Snakes in fourth round

The Diamondbacks have selected Cissell with the 132nd overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Cissell is a 6-foot-2 switch-hitting prep shortstop, but he shows a much more comfortable swing from the left side at this stage of his development. He already exhibits solid bat speed and still has the ability to add more strength to his frame, offering hope that he could emerge as an above-average power hitter down the road. Cissell is committed to Missouri, but Arizona may look to lure him away by signing him to an above-slot deal.

  • Diamondbacks' Daniel Eagen: Headed to desert

The Diamondbacks have selected Eagen with the 102nd overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Eagen had a slow start to his collegiate career but returned from elbow and shoulder issues to be the Big South Conference Pitcher of the Year with Presbyterian in 2024. The key to his success was a jump in velocity, and his fastball now sits at 93-94 mph. Eagen's best offering is his curveball, and he also finds the strike zone consistently, giving him a safe floor as a reliever even if he can't stick in a pro rotation.

  • Diamondbacks' Ivan Luciano: Potential money-saving pick

The Diamondbacks have selected Luciano with the 64th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

The Diamondbacks had already landed three high-upside position players who could command above-slot bonuses, and with Luciano being ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 220 prospect in the class, this could end up being a money-saving pick. The Puerto Rican catcher is a glove-first prospect with minimal power potential.

  • Diamondbacks' JD Dix: Snagged by Snakes

The Diamondbacks have selected Dix with the 35th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Dix is a switch-hitting prep shortstop from Wisconsin who had shoulder surgery in the fall. The ailing shoulder impacted his play last summer on the showcase circuit, but at his best, Dix shows 20-homer upside with a chance for an above-average hit tool and above-average speed. It's not a strong class for toolsy position players who can hit, and as Dix fills out his 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame, he could be one of the better power/speed threats from this draft. The fact he projects to stick at shortstop is a big mark in his favor.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryan Waldschmidt: Headed to Arizona

The Diamondbacks have selected Waldschmidt with the 31st overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Waldschmidt has dealt with inopportune injuries as an amateur that led to him being lightly recruited in high school and playing only four games in the Cape Cod League last summer before tearing his left ACL. He made up for it this spring for Kentucky, showcasing all the tools that matter for fantasy, including plus power, a great combination of contact ability and strong swing decisions, and improving speed that has a chance to be another plus tool. Waldschmidt slashed .333/.469/.610 with 14 home runs, 25 steals and a 16.5 percent strikeout rate in 59 games as a junior. The big knock is that he's a below-average defensive outfielder with a below-average arm. Perhaps he could be fine eventually in left field thanks to his foot speed, but he will need to provide significant offensive value to play.

  • Diamondbacks' Slade Caldwell: Slips to Snakes

The Diamondbacks have selected Caldwell with the 29th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Caldwell has a chance to impact the game on both sides of the ball thanks to plus-plus speed on the bases and in the field to go with premium bat speed at the dish. Despite a compact 5-foot-9, 180-pound frame, Caldwell takes big hacks and takes advantage of his smaller strike zone. The lefty-hitting prep center fielder out of Arkansas has drawn some comparisons to Mets prospect Jett Williams, although Williams was an even more prolific performer in high school than Caldwell. His fringe arm is his weakest tool, but he could still end up covering enough ground to be a plus defender up the middle.

  • Diamondbacks' Blake Walston: Trending toward August return

Walston (elbow) isn't expected to return from the 15-day injured list until sometime in August, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

After turning in a 2.84 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 11:9 K:BB in 12.2 innings through his first three big-league outings (two starts), Walston was placed on the 15-day injured list June 6. His injury was initially classified as left elbow inflammation, but the Diamondbacks have since listed him with a left elbow strain, according to MLB.com. While Walston has resumed throwing off flat ground from 60 to 100 feet, the Diamondbacks haven't yet indicated that he's been cleared for bullpen sessions, so he still looks to be several weeks away from being stretched back out for a starter's workload. All of Jordan Montgomery (knee), Eduardo Rodriguez (lat) and Merrill Kelly (shoulder) are further along in their throwing progressions and appear poised to beat Walston back from the injured list, so the 22-year-old southpaw will most likely be optioned to Triple-A Reno once he's activated.
