  • Tigers' Casey Mize: Ruled out through road trip

Mize (hamstring) has been ruled out through the Tigers' upcoming road trip which ends July 25, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Mize has been sidelined for all of July with a strained left hamstring. Manager A.J. Hinch said recently that the hope is the hurler will be ready to throw off a mound soon, and the skipper also indicated Mize will need to make at least one rehab start before being activated. The Tigers play 12 straight games coming out of the All-Star break before a day off July 31, so the team will need to add a fifth starter soon, with Matt Manning being the most likely candidate to fill in for Mize.

  • Tigers' Kerry Carpenter: Hopes to begin rehab stint soon

Carpenter (back) is aiming to begin a rehab assignment before the end of July, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Carpenter had a setback with his lumbar spine stress fracture in late June but resumed workouts earlier this month. He's been sidelined since late May and is without a timetable for his return, but it's looking like he won't be an option for the Tigers until at least mid-August.

  • Tigers' Jack Penney: Going to Detroit

The Tigers have selected Penney with the 147th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A lefty-hitting third baseman from Notre Dame, Penney didn't have a great junior season (.269 average, nine homers in 52 games) and his college production actually peaked as a freshman, when he hit .288 with a .996 OPS in 39 games. He doesn't have loud tools or a high ceiling for fantasy.

  • Tigers' Michael Massey: Selected by Detroit

The Tigers have selected Massey with the 114th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Massey has shifted between a rotation and relief role during his collegiate career at Tulane and Wake Forest. He has a power fastball-slider combination that plays well in relief, but less so as a starter. Massey will likely settle into a bullpen role as a pro, but the Tigers could give him an initial look in longer stints.

  • Tigers' Josh Randall: Headed to Motown

The Tigers have selected Randall with the 85th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A high school catcher, Randall converting to pitching at the University of Arizona before transferring to San Diego, where he emerged at the Friday night starter. The right-hander can pound the strike zone with a heavy sinker and above-average slider, and while his profile does suggest a future as a high-leverage reliever, Detroit will likely give him every chance to develop as a starter.

  • Tigers' Kenta Maeda: Delivers scoreless appearance

Maeda came out of the bullpen and threw 3.2 shutout frames during Detroit's walk-off win over the Dodgers. He allowed one hit and struck out five batters.

For the first time this season, Maeda worked a bulk-relief role and the results looked great. He threw 34 of 55 pitches for strikes and generated 11 whiffs. He was crushed for 15 runs in just 6.1 innings over his previous two outings. Maeda will enter the second half without a clear role in Detroit. He's registered an unsightly 6.88 ERA and 55:23 K:BB through 69.1 frames.

  • Tigers' Ethan Schiefelbein: Scooped by Detroit

The Tigers have selected Schiefelbein with the 72nd overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A prep southpaw from California, Schiefelbein has a deep pitch mix for a high schooler, with his low-90s fastball and above-average slider leading the way. He already shows a good feel for his changeup and throws plenty of strikes despite a high-effort operation.

  • Tigers' Owen Hall: Headed to Detroit

The Tigers have selected Hall with the 49th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Hall is a 6-foot-3 righty who went to high school in Oklahoma. He has a projectable frame (185 pounds) and could add even more velocity to his low-90s fastball in the coming years. His slider is his best secondary pitch, and his curveball is pretty good too.

  • Tigers' Bryce Rainer: Snagged by Tigers

The Tigers have selected Rainer with the 11th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Once seen by some as a better prospect on the mound, Rainer showed up to his senior season for Harvard-Westlake with more strength and athleticism en route to solidifying his standing as one of the best prep position players in the class. The 6-foot-3 lefty-hitting shortstop showcased plus all-fields power potential and borderline plus speed. He should stick at shortstop for the foreseeable future, but if he does need to move to third base, his plus arm would allow him to handle the hot corner with ease. Scouts praise Rainer's hitting ability, and while he is generally considered to be power-over-hit, the expectation is that he'll hit for plus power with a decent average.

  • Tigers' Alex Faedo: Retires one batter to earn win

Faedo (4-1) walked a batter and retired one via strikeout to earn the win in Sunday's 4-3 victory over the Dodgers.

Faedo needed 12 pitches to close out the top of the ninth inning, then scooped up the win when the Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the frame. The righty finished a solid first half of the season in which he posted a 3.50 ERA and 38 strikeouts across 43.2 innings of relief. Faedo will remain a bullpen option for the Tigers after the All-Star break, and he can give the team multiple innings when needed.

  • Tigers' Zach McKinstry: Triples, steals base Sunday

McKinstry went 1-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Dodgers. He also stole a base.

McKinstry showed off his speed in the last game of the first half, as he recorded his third triple of the season and seventh stolen base. The utility player got the start at shortstop with Javier Baez (back) held out, though Baez is not expected to need a stint on the injured list. McKinstry will slot into a reserve role after the All-Star break if Baez is healthy, which limits the former's fantasy upside.

  • Tigers' Javier Baez: Could avoid IL stint

Baez (back) is not currently slated to be placed on the injured list, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Baez isn't starting Sunday against the Dodgers after being removed early from Saturday's contest due to a lower-back injury. He's available only in an emergency situation Sunday, per Jason Beck of MLB.com. However, manager A.J. Hinch described Baez's outlook as "encouraging" and said that the veteran infielder is in better spirits, and it appears that he may be good to go when play resumes Friday following the All-Star break.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Getting break Sunday

Malloy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers.

Malloy will get a breather in the Tigers' final game before the All-Star break after he had started in each of the team's last five contests while going 5-for-18 with a home run, a triple, two walks, three runs and two RBI. Riley Greene will get a day out of the outfield and will serve as Detroit's designated hitter while Malloy takes a seat.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: On bench in series finale

Rogers is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers.

Rogers is on the bench for the third time in four games to close out of the All-Star break. Carson Kelly will get the nod behind the plate once again Sunday, but the Tigers' catching situation remains fluid. Manager A.J. Hinch will likely ride the hotter bat of the two, and right now, Kelly looks to be the favored option. Kelly will head into Sunday's contest with a seven-game hitting streak.
