  • Astros' Luis Garcia: Will resume mound work soon

Astros general manager Dana Brown said in an interview Thursday on "The Sean Salisbury Show" that Garcia (elbow) will resume throwing off the mound in a couple days, Michael Schwab of The Juice Box Journal reports.

Garcia was pulled off his rehab assignment after not responding well during his most recent rehab start July 4, but he was never shut down from throwing and is almost ready to get back on the bump. The right-hander is making his way back from Tommy John surgery, and once he's cleared to resume his rehab assignment, he'll likely need multiple starts in the minors before becoming an option for the Astros rotation.

  • Astros' Kyle Tucker: Still no timetable for return

Astros general manager Dana Brown said in an interview Thursday on "The Sean Salisbury Show" that Tucker (shin) remains without a timeline for a return from the 10-day injured list, Michael Schwab of The Juice Box Journal reports.

Brown added that Tucker is doing some light on-field baseball activities and will require a rehab assignment before being activated. Tucker has been sidelined since early June with a right shin contusion.

  • Astros' Chris Gittens: Returns from IL

Gittens (knee) has gone 5-for-14 with a walk, an RBI and a run in four games for Triple-A Sugar Land since being reinstated the 7-day injured list last Thursday.

Gittens had been sidelined all season at Triple-A after suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee early in spring training and requiring surgery. The 30-year-old doesn't possess a spot on Houston's 40-man roster and will face an uphill battle to make it back to the majors, where he last appeared in 2021 as a member of the Yankees.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Shifts back to bullpen

Dubin has made his last three appearances out of the Houston bullpen, striking out three while allowing one earned run on four hits and one walk across 2.2 innings.

Dubin made 3.1- and 2.2-inning starts on June 30 and July 5, respectively, but he was moved back to the bullpen after the Astros got Jake Bloss back from the injured list shortly before the All-Star break to fill out the final spot in their rotation. Though he notched a three-inning save May 16, Dubin has otherwise operated in a low-leverage role out of the bullpen this season, as he hasn't recorded any holds over his 17 relief appearances.

  • Astros' Luis Garcia: Pulled off rehab assignment

The Astros pulled Garcia (elbow) off his minor-league rehab assignment this week, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Making his way back from May 2023 Tommy John surgery, Garcia made his first rehab start June 28 in the rookie-level Florida Complex League and his second July 4 with Double-A Corpus Christi. He didn't bounce back well from his start with Corpus Christi and hadn't throw a bullpen session since the outing, with the Astros having limited him to playing catch. While Garcia doesn't seem to be dealing with a major setback, he'll have to restart a 30-day rehab window once the team feels he's ready for game action. Clearly, a return from the 60-day injured list won't be in the forecast anytime soon for Garcia.

  • Astros' Victor Caratini: Starting rehab assignment

The Astros sent Caratini (hip) to the rookie-level Florida Complex League on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment.

Caratini has been shelved since late June with a left hip flexor strain but has been cleared for rehab games. The veteran catcher shouldn't need an extended rehab assignment before being activated from the 10-day injured list, with a return early on in the second half a likely outcome.

  • Astros' Cole Hertzler: Drafted in fifth round

The Astros have selected Hertzler with the 163rd overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Hertzler is a big-bodied 6-foot-4 righty who moved into the rotation this year for Liberty after scrapping his two-way play. There may be some untapped potential that would lead the Astros to try him as a starter, but his above-average changeup is currently his best pitch.

  • Astros' Parker Smith: Selected in fourth round

The Astros have selected Smith with the 131st overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A 6-foot-4, 230-pound righty out of Rice, Smith pounds the zone and can handle a starter's workload. He has a low-90s fastball and relies on commanding his three-pitch mix to turn lineups over. If it all works out, he could be a back-of-the-rotation starter in a few years.

  • Astros' Ryan Forcucci: Goes to Houston in third round

The Astros have selected Forcucci with the 101st overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander was deployed as both a starter and reliever at UC-San Diego, and durability questions could have him ticketed for a relief role with the Astros. Forcucci does have a projectable frame though and could add some velocity to a fastball that already touches 97 mph with good movement, and he has the makings of a starter's arsenal with a slider, slow curve and changeup.

  • Astros' Ronel Blanco: Takes tough-luck loss

Blanco (9-4) took the loss Sunday against the Rangers, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks with five strikeouts across six innings.

All the damage against Blanco came in the first inning, when Josh Smith launched a two-run home run. However, the Astros managed to score only one run until the ninth inning, sticking Blanco with the loss despite logging a quality start. The 30-year-old has been outstanding this season, owning a 2.56 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP over 109.0 innings at the All-Star break. Before 2024, Blanco had a career 4.78 ERA in 58.1 innings and had primarily been utilized out of the bullpen, making him one of baseball's biggest breakouts so far.

  • Astros' Jake Meyers: Goes yard in loss

Meyers went 2-for-4 with a solo home run during Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Rangers.

Meyers' third-inning solo home run off Max Scherzer was the Astros' only run until the ninth inning. Sunday's performance marked Meyers' first multi-hit game since June 29. The 28-year-old will take a .242/.312/.424 slash line, 10 homers and seven stolen bases into the All-Star break.

  • Astros' Walker Janek: Drafted 28th overall

The Astros have selected Janek with the 28th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A mid-major catching prospect who's had success with a wood bat, Janek should be able to stick behind the plate, even though he doesn't project to be a plus defender. Janek slashed .281/.364/.474 with five home runs, seven steals and an 18.5 percent strikeout rate in 30 Cape Cod League games last summer and had an 1.185 OPS with 17 home runs, a 14.8 percent walk rate and a 16.6 percent strikeout rate in 58 games as a junior for Sam Houston State. He doesn't have premium bat speed or foot speed, but he is strong and is an opportunistic base stealer. There's not a high fantasy ceiling here, but Janek should have a big-league career.

  • Astros' Justin Verlander: Completes bullpen session

Verlander (neck) threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session Sunday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Verlander used his entire arsenal in the session and finished the bullpen without incident, per McTaggart. He had originally been expected to toss 10-to-15 pitches, so all signs are that he's trending in a positive direction. A timeframe for Verlander's return isn't yet clear, but it is possible that he could rejoin Houston's rotation before the end of July.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Delivers quality start Saturday

Arrighetti came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Rangers, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out seven.

The rookie right-hander needed 85 pitches (53 strikes) to produce his third quality start of the season as he got locked in a pitchers' duel with Nathan Eovaldi. Arrighetti has had his moments, but he's been very erratic this season, and since the beginning of June he has only one win in eight outings with a 5.20 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 42:21 K:BB through 36.1 innings. Those numbers are good enough to keep him in the rotation coming out of the All-Star break, but Arrighetti could eventually lose his spot if Houston adds significant reinforcements to its staff, either from the injured list or at the trade deadline.
