  • Phillies' Carter Mathison: Goes in fifth round

The Phillies have selected Mathison with the 162nd overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A lefty-hitting outfielder from Indiana, Mathison is a plus runner with a chance to be an above-average defensive outfielder. He is power-over-hit, but neither tool projects to be better than average. He hasn't put his speed to use much on the bases, stealing just 16 on 20 attempts during his Big Ten career.

  • Phillies' Carson DeMartini: Selected by Phils

The Phillies have selected DeMartini with the 130th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

DeMartini's leading skill is his power, though he cut down on his strikeout rate in his first two years at Virginia Tech. A torn labrum caused him to miss most of the 2023 season, and when he returned in 2024 his whiff rate also jumped. DeMartini's potential success as a pro will come down to managing his strikeout rate, as he has enough power to be in the lineup at any position on the diamond.

  • Phillies' John Spikerman: Philly bound at pick No. 100

The Phillies have selected Spikerman with the 100th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Few prospects in the 2024 class bring as much speed to the table as Spikerman, who was a pest on the basepaths during his collegiate career at Oklahoma while also displaying plenty of range in center field. The switch hitter showed improvement with his contact rate this spring, but he likely has too much swing and miss in his game to profile as a top-of-the-order bat.

  • Phillies' Michael Mercado: Allows six runs in bulk relief

Mercado (1-2) took the loss Sunday, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks over four innings against Oakland. He struck out two.

Mercado tossed a couple of scoreless innings to start his outing, but things began to unravel in the fourth. Mercado allowed three two-run homers in total -- a fourth-inning blast by Brent Rooker, a fifth-inning long ball by Lawrence Butler, then a second dinger by Rooker in the sixth that ended Mercado's day. Following a promising beginning to his career that saw Mercado allow one run in five innings against the Cubs during his first career start, things have gone downhill, with the rookie right-hander having allowed 11 earned runs over his last two appearances spanning 5.2 innings.

  • Phillies' Griffin Burkholder: Drafted 63rd overall

The Phillies have selected Burkholder with the 63rd overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Burkholder is a prep outfielder from Virginia with plus-plus speed and a chance to hit enough to play every day. He has a strong, 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame and already has plus raw power. Burkholder could stick in center field if he maintains his current speed, but there's a chance he'll slow down as he fills out.

  • Phillies' Luis Ortiz: Gets Tommy John surgery

Ortiz underwent Tommy John surgery Thursday to repair a torn UCL in his right elbow, MLB.com reports.

After spraining his left ankle in his 2024 debut March 30, Ortiz was placed on the injured list a day later. He began a rehab assignment at Single-A Clearwater in late April, only to be shut down again after experiencing right shoulder inflammation following his second rehab outing. Ortiz shook off the shoulder injury and resumed his rehab assignment June 11 before being shut down just over a week later with forearm discomfort. The reliever was recommended for surgery after undergoing further testing and will now miss the rest of the season and the majority of the 2025 campaign.

  • Phillies' Michael Rucker: Restarts rehab assignment

Rucker (hand) resumed his rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday, working one inning while striking out a batter and giving up one run on three hits and one walk.

Rucker had been pulled off his rehab assignment last Sunday due to turf toe in his right big toe, but he evidently made a swift recovery from that injury. The 30-year-old is still in the process of building back up while he's been on the injured list all season due to a right hand arterial vasospasm. He'll likely work in middle relief for the Phillies once he's activated from the 60-day IL.

  • Phillies' Spencer Turnbull: Plays catch Saturday

Turnbull (lat) was cleared to resume playing catch Saturday at the Phillies' facility in Clearwater, Fla., MLB.com reports.

Turnbull looks to be trending positively in his recovery from the strained right lat he sustained June 26, but he still has several checkpoints to hit in the rehab process before making his return from the 15-day injured list. Phillies manager Rob Thomson previously said that Turnbull was likely facing a 6-to-8-week recovery timeline, so the right-hander shouldn't be expected back from the IL until middle or late August.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Unlikely for Pittsburgh series

Manager Rob Thomson said Sunday that Realmuto (knee) likely won't be activated from the 10-day injured list when the Phillies open their second-half schedule Friday in Pittsburgh, MLB.com reports.

Realmuto is reportedly progressing well in his recovery from the meniscectomy he underwent June 12, but his return date looks to have been pushed back a few days after poor weather in Philadelphia this past weekend prevented him from getting in his scheduled on-field work. The veteran backstop should continue to take part in baseball activities on his own during the All-Star break this coming week, but the Phillies will likely want to monitor him in a few more workouts before reinstating him from the IL. A return to action in the week of July 22 still looks to be in the cards for Realmuto.

  • Phillies' Samuel Aldegheri: Moves up to Double-A

The Phillies promoted Aldegheri from High-A Jersey Shore to Double-A Reading on Tuesday.

He made his Double-A debut three days later, taking the loss in a start against Akron after striking out eight over five innings while allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks. The 22-year-old lefty joined the Reading rotation after dazzling over his 13 starts at the High-A level, where he turned in a 3.18 ERA and 1.06 WHIP while striking out 94 batters over 68 innings.

  • Phillies' Jean Cabrera: Moves up to Double-A

The Phillies promoted Cabrera from High-A Jersey Shore to Double-A Reading on Tuesday.

Cabrera made his Reading debut Thursday, striking out three and allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks over five innings in a loss to Akron. The 22-year-old righty had previously accrued a 3.39 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 91:25 K:BB over 77 innings at the High-A level.

  • Phillies' Justin Crawford: Bumped up to Double-A

The Phillies promoted Crawford from High-A Jersey Shore to Double-A Reading on Friday.

Crawford didn't immediately report to Reading over the weekend since he took part in the All-Star Futures Game in Arlington, Texas, so his Double-A debut will have to wait until the second half of the season. The 20-year-old outfielder earned the promotion to Reading after slashing .301/.349/.438 with six home runs and 27 stolen bases across 317 plate appearances with Jersey Shore.

  • Phillies' Dante Nori: Drafted in first round

The Phillies have selected Nori with the 27th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A lefty-hitting prep outfielder, Nori has borderline 70-grade speed and has a chance to be a plus center fielder. He is one of the best athletes in the class, but he is also one of the older high schoolers expected to be drafted, as he turns 20 in October. Nori is clearly hit-over-power, and the hope would be that he either hits enough to be a leadoff hitter or develops enough power to not slide to the bottom third of the lineup.
