  • Pirates' Thomas Harrington: Dominant at Double-A

Harrington has thrown five-plus innings in eight straight starts for Double-A Altoona, logging a 2.80 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 47 strikeouts in 45 innings over that span.

Harrington's season numbers are even better, but he wasn't pitching as deep into games early in the season. The 23-year-old righty matched a career high with 11 strikeouts in his most recent start July 10 against Bowie. He has three above-average-or-better offerings (fastball, changeup, slider) and also throws a cutter and a curveball. His 3.5-percent walk rate is the fourth-best mark among Double-A pitchers who have thrown at least 50 innings.

  • Pirates' Braxton Ashcraft: Heads to Triple-A IL

Triple-A Indianapolis placed Ashcraft on its 7-day injured list July 6 with an unspecified injury.

Ashcraft had previously been placed on Indianapolis' IL on June 28 before being activated July 6, but it's unclear if his latest injury is related to the previous one or a new concern. While the IL stints in quick succession certainly aren't ideal, Ashcraft has otherwise continued to excel when he's been able to take the mound. Over his last 10 outings between Indianapolis and Double-A Altoona, Aschraft has rung up a 1.39 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 59:10 K:BB in 51.2 innings.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Comes off Triple-A IL

Triple-A Indianapolis reinstated Burrows (elbow) from its 60-day injured list Tuesday and assigned him to the rookie-level Florida Complex League.

Burrows had been on the shelf all season while he completed his recovery from April 2023 Tommy John surgery. He began a rehab assignment in the FCL on June 17 and later moved on to Single-A Bradenton, posting a 7.36 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 11:7 K:BB in 11 innings across his five rehab starts. Though Burrows appears to be fully healthy again, the Pirates will have him stick around in Florida a little longer to iron out the kinks before he's deemed ready to reclaim a spot in the Triple-A rotation.

  • Pirates' Will Taylor: Snatched by Bucs

The Pirates have selected Taylor with the 145th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A desire to play football as well as baseball in college caused Taylor to miss a chance at a big payday out of high school in 2019. Injuries at Clemson led to multiple knee surgeries however, forcing him to give up the gridiron, but he had an impressive 2023 season as a hitter before a broken wrist ruined his 2024 campaign. The lost development time have hurt his ability to turn his athleticism into power at the plate, and the knee surgeries have sapped his foot speed, although he can still handle center field defensively.

  • Pirates' Eddie Rynders: Selected by Bucs in fourth round

The Pirates have selected Rynders with the 112th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

The prep shortstop from Wisconsin is committed to Kent State, but the Pirates will look to lure him to the pro ranks after selecting him in the fourth round. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Rynders boasts plus power from the left side of the plate and sprays the ball around the field, but he lacks quickness and will likely need to move from third base to shortstop once he begins his professional career.

  • Pirates' Josh Hartle: Nabbed by Bucs in third round

The Pirates have selected Hartle with the 83rd overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A southpaw from Wake Forest, Hartle is a big 6-foot-5 hurler, but his 90-mph fastball is his weakest pitch at the moment. Hartle is a pitchability starter with four pitches who may not have played up to his abilities as a junior. His slider, changeup and cutter are all useable and he has above-average control.

  • Pirates' Quinn Priester: Follows Keller for win

Priester (2-5) allowed one earned run on three hits across two innings to earn the win Sunday against the White Sox.

Priester entered the game in the fourth inning after Mitch Keller struggled through his start. He wasn't dominant in the outing but did induce four groundball outs to earn his second win of the season. He's also pitched well in two outings since returning from the injured list, allowing three earned runs across eight innings with an 8:2 K:BB. Priester is still an option for the rotation out of the All-Star break with both Jared Jones (lat) and Bailey Falter (triceps) sidelined.

  • Pirates' Joey Bart: Blasts three-run homer

Bart went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run Sunday against the White Sox.

Bart started seven of the last nine games behind the plate for Pittsburgh heading into the All-Star break. He's gone only 4-for-21 in that span, though two have been home runs while also tallying seven RBI and five runs scored.

  • Pirates' Hunter Stratton: Kicking off rehab assignment

Stratton (tricep) will begin a rehab assignment Monday in the rookie-level Florida Complex League.

The right-hander has been on the shelf since June 14 with a tricep strain but has now reached the final stage of his throwing progression. He'll likely need at least a couple of tune-up outings in the minors before being activated from the 15-day injured list, potentially as soon as Friday, when the Pirates open their second-half schedule. Stratton turned in a 4.26 ERA and 1.11 WHIP while gathering two wins, one save and four holds over 31.2 innings before landing on the IL.

  • Pirates' Mitch Keller: Pulled after three innings

Keller didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the White Sox, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over three innings. He struck out three.

The Pirates opted not to bring Keller out for the fourth inning, providing the 28-year-old with additional rest ahead of the All-Star Break. Keller has thrown 114.1 innings in the first half of the campaign and is on pace to shatter his career highs in starts and innings pitched, so it's possible the Pirates monitor Keller's workload during the back half of 2024. Still, Keller should be a strong fantasy option when on the mound, as he has posted a 3.46 ERA with 105 strikeouts this season while cruising to a 10-5 record.

  • Pirates' Bryan Reynolds: Stays hot

Reynolds went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two additional runs scored during Sunday's 9-4 win over the White Sox.

After going 4-for-5 at the dish Saturday, Reynolds added another pair of hits Sunday, including an eighth-inning homer off John Brebbia. The outfielder enters the All-Star break with a .284/.347/.487 slash line. He ranks 11th in OPS (.834) and ninth in home runs (18) among National League players.

  • Pirates' Wyatt Sanford: Drafted in second round

The Pirates have selected Sanford with the 47th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A lefty-hitting shortstop from Texas, Sanford is a plus runner with a chance to be a plus defender up the middle. He is a better real-life prospect than a fantasy one, as his power is fringe-average and his hit tool is just average. He hits from the left side and could get to more power as he fills out his 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame.

  • Pirates' Levi Sterling: Popped by Pirates

The Pirates have selected Sterling with the 37th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

One of the most projectable prep pitchers in this year's class, Sterling was a two-way player at his California high school, but the 6-foot-5 righty has more upside on the mound than in the field. His delivery is easy and athletic, and the assumption is that his low-90s fastball will tick up a couple notches at maturity. Sterling is adept at spinning the ball, with his low-80s curveball and mid-80s slider each showing plus potential. He doesn't turn 18 until September, which is a big mark in his favor, and his athleticism portends starter-level control.

  • Pirates' Konnor Griffin: First prep player selected

The Pirates have selected Griffin with the ninth overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Griffin, the consensus top prep position player in this year's class, has four loud tools, while his hit tool is more of a question mark. A 6-foot-4, 215-pound righty hitter who plays a good shortstop and an even better center field, Griffin has 70-grade speed, a 70-grade arm and plus power that could tick up even more at his physical peak. He turned 18 in April, so he's on the younger side, and most sluggers who are as tall and as young as Griffin come with some hit tool risk. Projecting prep hit tools is one of the toughest tasks for amateur scouts, so there's not going to be much clarity on whether that's a clear weakness or a non-issue until the Mississippi high schooler gets to full-season ball. He has a very high ceiling as a 30/30 candidate whose defensive utility should keep him in the lineup every day.
