  • Padres' Jagger Haynes: Struggling to find zone at High-A

Haynes has accrued a 4.23 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 56:40 K:BB across 66 innings over 14 appearances (13 starts) with High-A Fort Wayne this season.

A 2020 fifth-round pick for the Padres, Haynes didn't make his professional debut until April 14, 2023 after a prolonged recovery from Tommy John surgery. After making 11 starts for Single-A Lake Elsinore in 2023, Haynes has jumped up a level in 2024, but he hasn't demonstrated much progress in honing his command, which had been a concern dating back to his prep days. The 21-year-old lefty stands at 6-foot-3 and 170 pounds and lacks a reliable third pitch beyond his fastball and curveball, and he could be ticketed for the bullpen in the long term.

  • Padres' Fernando Tatis: Receives good news from MRI

An MRI this week on Tatis' injured right quadricep showed improved healing, and the outfielder is expected to incrementally increase his baseball activities, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Tatis -- who is recovering from a femoral stress reaction -- has already begun playing catch and swinging a bat. A clearer timetable for Tatis' return from the 10-day injured list is unlikely to be available until he resumes running with no issues, but he certainly looks to be trending in a good direction.

  • Padres' Carson Montgomery: Shut down with injury

Single-A Lake Elsinore placed Montgomery on its 7-day injured list April 27 with an unspecified injury.

Montgomery's absence is closing in on three months, but the Padres haven't provided any details regarding his injury nor offered word on if he's on track to pitch again in 2024. The 21-year-old right-hander made three appearances (two starts) for Lake Elsinore before landing on the shelf, striking out 10 over seven innings while allowing three earned runs on four hits and six walks.

  • Padres' Tirso Ornelas: Added to 40-man roster

The Padres selected Ornelas' contract and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

Ornelas has spent the entire 2024 season at El Paso, slashing .316/.390/.515 with 12 home runs and five stolen bases across 310 plate appearances. Though he'll remain with El Paso coming out of the All-Star break, the 24-year-old outfielder is now a part of the Padres' 40-man roster. The transaction should improve his chances of receiving his first big-league call-up at some point later this season.

  • Padres' Leodalis De Vries: As advertised at Single-A

De Vries is slashing .266/.389/.506 with five home runs, five steals and a 23.2 percent strikeout rate in his last 20 games for Single-A Lake Elsinore.

The consensus top prospect in this year's Jan. 15 international signing class, De Vries was aggressively assigned to Single-A for his pro debut as a 17-year-old. He struggled to start the year but has quickly found his footing and is showcasing five-category fantasy upside.

  • Padres' Luis Arraez: Out of All-Star Game with thumb injury

Arraez will attend All-Star festivities in Texas but won't play for the National League in Tuesday's game due to a jammed left thumb, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Arraez first hurt the thumb while sliding into third base June 25. He has played in all but two of San Diego's games since then, most recently sitting out Sunday's 6-3 loss to Atlanta. While Arraez has mostly been able to remain in the lineup despite the injury, he admitted that the thumb hurts "a lot" when he swings and catches the ball. The issue probably won't be anything that causes him to miss much, if any, additional time in games that count, but he'll use the All-Star break to rest the jammed thumb rather than risking further injury in the exhibition contest.

  • Padres' Kavares Tears: Lands with San Diego

The Padres have selected Tears with the 134th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Tears had to be patient for his opportunity at Tennessee, but he took advantage of it in 2024. He possesses elite bat speed and strength from the left side, allowing him to spray the ball all over the field with a line drive approach. Tears doesn't have one standout tool but offers a well-rounded profile, but he will need to prove his standout line was repeatable after only one year of a significant sample in college.

  • Padres' Kale Fountain: Popped by Padres

The Padres have selected Fountain with the 151st overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A big-bodied prep third baseman who is listed at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, Fountain is a power-over-hit prospect from Nebraska. There were mixed reports on the caliber of the hit tool, but power is his calling card, and there should be plenty of swing-and-miss in his game, even in a best-case scenario.

  • Padres' Tyson Neighbors: Heads to San Diego

The Padres have selected Neighbors with the 118th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Neighbors is purely a relief pitcher and is regarded as the best bullpen prospect in the class. He consistently sits between 94-96 mph with his fastball, but his slider is his primary swing-and-miss pitch. Neighbors is considered a potential future closer and could reach the majors quickly.

  • Padres' Clark Candiotti: Headed to San Diego

The Padres have selected Candiotti with the 135th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A 6-foot-4, 237-pound righty whose father Tom was famous for his knuckleball, Candiotti has a four-pitch mix with the potential to be a No. 5 starter someday. He lacks a plus pitch, so despite the fact he is already 23 years old, there may not be enough pure stuff for him to fit in a relief role.

  • Padres' Cobb Hightower: Lands in San Diego in third round

The Padres have selected Hightower with the 88th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A six-foot, 180-pound prep middle infielder, Hightower lacks any loud tools but possesses good bat speed and rates as an above-average runner. San Diego will need to pry Hightower away from his commitment to North Carolina to secure him as part of its draft class.

  • Padres' Randy Vasquez: Takes fifth loss

Vasquez (2-5) took the loss Sunday against Atlanta, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings.

Vasquez kept Atlanta off the scoreboard through three frames before eventually surrendering a run in the fourth and another in the fifth. He was pulled after five at just 73 pitches while registering six whiffs. Vasquez will head into the All-Star break on a bit of a nice groove. Over his last four starts, the righty has posted a 2.21 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB in 20.1 innings. On a larger scale, Vasquez hasn't been as sharp, as he owns a 4.57 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 43:15 K:BB in 63 innings.

  • Padres' Luis Campusano: Homers in loss

Campusano went 1-for-1 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 6-3 loss to Atlanta.

Campusano entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh and took A.J. Minter deep for a two-run blast to make it a 5-3 deficit for the Padres. The long ball was his first hit in eight at-bats since being activated from the injured list July 5 and was his sixth homer on the year. Campusano has started just two games since his activation and will need to recapture his form from 2023 if he is to earn a larger role. The 25-year-old backstop is slashing .230/.276/.376 with 19 extra-base hits, 33 RBI, 26 runs and a 14:29 BB:K in 228 plate appearances.

  • Padres' Boston Bateman: Picked by Padres

The Padres have selected Bateman with the 52nd overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A prep southpaw from California, Bateman has a big curveball and can touch 97 mph with his fastball. Bateman stands 6-foot-8, 240 pounds and turns 19 in September, so he should be an intimidating presence on the mound. He'll need to find a useful third pitch and work on improving his command and control in order to make it as a starter.

  • Padres' Kash Mayfield: Headed to San Diego

The Padres have selected Mayfield with the 25th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

The two main quibbles with Mayfield are unrelated to his stuff or control: he took last summer off so pro teams didn't get to see him face the best competition on the showcase circuit, and he is one of the older high schoolers in the class, having turned 19 in February. Other than those two factors, there's a lot to like. The 6-foot-4 lefty has a great fastball/changeup combination, with his heater ticking up into the mid-90s at times this spring and his changeup grading as one of the better ones in the entire class. His breaking ball is still a work in progress, and his control should be good enough to start.
