  • Blue Jays' Joey Votto: Making debut for Triple-A club

Triple-A Buffalo reinstated Votto (ankle) from its 7-day injured list ahead of Friday's game against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Votto had participated in 16 rehab contests between Single-A Dunedin and the rookie-level Florida Complex League, going 8-for-43 with one home run and a 14:8 K:BB in 53 plate appearances. He seems to be feeling fine physically at this point, but Toronto would surely like to see better results from Votto at Triple-A before it considers adding him to the major-league roster.

  • Blue Jays' Jackson Wentworth: Ticketed for Toronto

The Blue Jays have selected Wentworth with the 158th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Wentworth missed his first season at Kansas State due to Tommy John surgery and only recently joined the rotation this spring. His fastball isn't anything special, sitting in the low-90s without much movement, but he has a potentially plus slider and plus changeup, so there's a pretty high ceiling here if everything goes perfectly with his health and command.

  • Blue Jays' Nick Mitchell: Lands in Toronto to end Round 4

The Blue Jays have selected Mitchell with the 136th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A transfer from Western Illinois, Mitchell shook off a broken hand and emerged as a reliable top-of-the-order hitter during his lone season on Indiana. The outfielder got on base at a .458 clip this spring and showcased plus speed, though it didn't translate into big stolen-base production. Mitchell drew positive reviews with wood bats in the Northwoods and Cape Cods Leagues over the previous two summers, offering hope that the transition to the professional ranks will be a fairly seamless one.

  • Blue Jays' Sean Keys: Lands with Toronto

The Blue Jays have selected Keys with the 125th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

The third baseman had a breakout in the Cape Cod League in 2023 and carried that momentum forward into a Patriot League Player of the Year Award in 2024 at Bucknell. Keys makes hard contact and has shown a strong batting eye, but there are questions regarding the power potential of his swing and approach. He'll likely have to move off the hot corner however, putting even more pressure on his bat in the pros as a first baseman or DH.

  • Blue Jays' Johnny King: Headed north of border

The Blue Jays have selected King with the 95th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A prep southpaw who turns 18 later this month, King has a prototypical 6-foot-3, 210-pound frame. He has a low-90s fastball and touches 95 mph. King is adept at spinning the ball and is a good athlete who should be able to repeat his delivery.

  • Blue Jays' Chad Green: Closes door for sixth save

Green picked up a four out save in Sunday's 8-7 win over the Diamondbacks. He allowed a hit and struck out one in a scoreless outing.

Green was able to help the Blue Jays hang on to the win after they blew a seven-run lead in the fifth. He allowed a two-out single to Christian Walker to put the tying run on base but was able to get Corbin Carroll to fly out to end the game. Green now has piled on four of his six saves this month despite allowing runs in three of his seven appearances. He'll head into the break boasting a sparkling 2.08 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB in 26 innings so far this season.

  • Blue Jays' Yusei Kikuchi: Can't escape disastrous fifth

Kikuchi allowed seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six over 4.2 innings Sunday against the Diamondbacks. He did not factor into the decision.

Kikuchi had no trouble getting through four innings and went into the fifth with a 7-0 lead that quickly evaporated. Kikuchi loaded the bases after allowing an infield single and two walks before Ketel Marte took him deep. Kikuchi was left in the game and could not help his own cause. He allowed another walk and a base hit before punching out Christian Walker for the second out of the inning. From there, Kikuchi gave up another run-scoring single and then hit Jake McCarthy before he finally was pulled from the game. Both inherited runners went on to score before the frame concluded. The seven runs allowed were Kikuchi's most in a game this season and he now has not picked up a win since June 11. The lefty will head into the break with a 4.42 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 117:26 K:BB in 106 innings.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Homers as part of three hit day

Guerrero went 3-for-5 with a solo homer, a double and two runs scored in Sunday's 8-7 win over the Diamondbacks.

After surrendering a 7-0 lead in the fifth, Guerrero swung the momentum back in the Blue Jays direction with a monstrous solo home run to center field in the seventh to put his team back up 8-7 and the score would hold there. The home run was his first this month and his eighth three-hit performance of the year. After a blistering end to June, Guerrero has cooled off a bit in July and is slashing .229/.250/.354 with his one homer, eight RBI and seven runs scored in 50 plate appearances. He'll head into the break slashing .288/.359/.456 and leads the Blue Jays in home runs (14), RBI (55) and runs scored (47) among other batting categories.

  • Blue Jays' Brandon Eisert: Dispatched to minors

The Blue Jays optioned Eisert to Triple-A Buffalo on Monday.

Eisert's latest stint in the majors lasted just one day, with the left-hander ultimately going unused out of the bullpen in Sunday's 8-7 win over the Diamondbacks. The Blue Jays will announce a replacement for Eisert on the 26-man active roster when the team returns from the All-Star break.

  • Blue Jays' Kevin Kiermaier: Hits grand slam Sunday

Kiermaier went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Sunday's 8-7 win over the Diamondbacks.

Kiermaier capped off a seven-run rally against Zac Gallen with a first-pitch grand slam in the fourth to put the Blue Jays up 7-0. The long ball was his second this month and his fourth on the year. Sunday marked just the third time this season Kiermaier drove in multiple runs. He's now up to 18 RBI and has driven in five over his past two starts. For the year, the 34-year-old is slashing .189/.234/.306 with 11 extra-base hits, 21 runs and a 10:62 BB:K in 196 plate appearances.

  • Blue Jays' Khal Stephen: Snagged by Jays

The Blue Jays have selected Stephen with the 59th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

Stephen transferred to Mississippi State from Purdue after his sophomore season and pitched well enough this spring to come off the board in the second round. The 6-foot-4 righty has a low-90s fastball that touches 96 mph and grades as a potentially above-average pitch, and he also has a good changeup and good control.

  • Blue Jays' Trey Yesavage: Headed north of border

The Blue Jays have selected Yesavage with the 20th overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft.

A 6-foot-4, 225-pound righty out of East Carolina, Yesavage is one of the younger college starters in the class, as he turns 21 later this month. He logged an 8.9 percent walk rate this year after walking 7.4 percent of batters faced as a sophomore, but the rest of his stats ticked up in his final year with the Pirates, including a career-high 93.1 innings. His 93-to-95 mph fastball touches 98 mph, while his mid-80s slider/cutter is arguably his best pitch. Yesavage has a complete four-pitch mix, with his changeup and curveball grading as at least average offerings. His stuff could tick up in pro ball, but as things stand, Yesavage looks like a potential mid-rotation starter, assuming he throws enough strikes.

  • Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk: Taking seat Sunday

Kirk is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks.

Kirk hasn't overtaken Danny Jansen as the Blue Jays' clear No. 1 backstop, but he started in both of the previous two contests and has turned the catcher position into more of a timeshare lately. The Blue Jays have been more willing to make room in the lineup for Kirk recently due to his hot bat; he's recorded at least one hit in each of his last six games and is slashing .476/.462/.571 overall during that stretch.
