Smith missed Tuesday's practice with an illness, but it appears he's already moved past the issue after returning to the field Wednesday. The 31-year-old outside linebacker has recorded eight-plus sacks in each of his last three seasons, and he's expected to remain a solid pass rusher in 2024.

The details of Smith's ailment are unknown at this point. It's not likely the veteran was planning on playing much during the Packers' preseason finale versus the Ravens on Saturday, but if he's absent, it could open up a few additional reps for 2023 first-rounder Lukas Van Ness.

Packers' Preston Smith: Restructures deal for cap purposes
Smith and the Packers agreed to a restructured contract Wednesday, creating $2.4 million in cap room, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Smith has three years left on a four-year, $52 million extension he signed in 2022. The veteran edge rusher has at least eight sacks in four of his five seasons with Green Bay and started all 17 games in 2023 on his way to 48 tackles (28 solo), eight sacks and two forced fumbles.

Packers' Preston Smith: Another productive season
Smith stacked up 48 tackles (28 solo), 8.0 sacks, four passes defended and two fumble recoveries over 17 games in the 2023 regular season.
Smith played a little less than he did in 2022, but he still started every game and recorded at least 8.0 sacks for the fourth time in his five years with the Packers. He also added 1.5 sacks across the Packers' two playoff games. Green Bay could decide to move on from Smith over the offseason as he's due a $5.4 million roster bonus in March, but cutting him would incur a dead cap hit of nearly $14 million. The 31-year-old's consistent production might encourage the team to pursue a restructure instead.

Packers' Preston Smith: Ready to go for divisional round
Smith (ankle) does not carry an injury designation into Saturday's divisional-round contest versus the 49ers, Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers official website reports.
Smith was considered a limited participant at the Packers' walkthrough Wednesday and he followed it up with a limited practice session Thursday, apparently doing enough to shed an injury designation for Saturday's game. The linebacker recorded a sack and a pass deflection in Green Bay's 48-32 win over the Cowboys in the wild-card round.

Smith (ankle) was limited in Wednesday's walk-through practice.
Smith has been dealing with the ankle issue for a couple weeks but was able to play through it in the wild-card upset of the Cowboys last weekend. After being estimated as DNP Tuesday, Wednesday's limited session in the walk-through is a good sign for his Saturday availability against the 49ers.

Smith (ankle) was listed as a DNP on Tuesday's estimated injury report, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.
Smith played through his ankle injury during Sunday's win at Dallas, so it's possible the Packers are just giving him extra rest. If he can manage a full practice Wednesday and/or Thursday, he could potentially shed his injury designation prior to Saturday's game in San Francisco.

Smith has been hindered by an ankle injury over the last week or so, but it seems as if that issue won't stop him from suiting up in the Packers' wild-card affair. The veteran pass rusher has logged 41.5 sacks in his five-year tenure with Green Bay, and he'll look to cause problems for Dak Prescott and the Cowboys' offense Sunday.

Smith (ankle) was estimated as limited at Wednesday's practice walkthrough.
Smith sat out a pair of practice sessions last week but was ultimately able to suit up for Sunday's win against Chicago. Barring any setbacks, it seems likely that he'll be able to take the field against Dallas in Sunday's wild-card contest. Smith recorded 2.5 sacks over the final three weeks of the campaign and finished with 8.0 sacks overall this season.
