  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Returns to practice

Sermon (hamstring) returned to practice Wednesday, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports.

Sermon injured his hamstring Aug. 11 during the Colts' preseason opener, after reports from the first two weeks of training camp suggested he was the favorite for the No. 2 role in the backfield. He's now one of three backs on the roster after Tuesday's cutdowns, joined by starter Jonathan Taylor and 23-year-old Tyler Goodson. As the roster currently stands, Sermon presumably would get most of the carries in the event of a Taylor injury, with Goodson then handling passing situations and more of the targets.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Could return to practice soon

Colts coach Shane Steichen said Sunday that he's hopeful for Sermon (hamstring) to return to practice next week, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.

Sermon has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury during the preseason opener Aug. 11, and he missed Thursday's 27-14 win in the exhibition finale against Cincinnati. Steichen's phrasing seems to indicate that the 25-year-old might return in the week immediately leading up to Indianapolis' season opener against the Texans on Sunday, Sept. 8. Sermon stretched with his teammates ahead of Sunday's practice, though he still wasn't in uniform, according to Bremer. When he's healthy, Sermon is considered to be the leading candidate to slot in as the No. 2 running back behind Jonathan Taylor. The former's lingering injury could leave a chance for either Evan Hull or Tyler Goodson to step in behind Taylor in Week 1.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Misses another week

Sermon (hamstring) didn't play in Thursday's 27-14 preseason win over the Bengals.

James Boyd of The Athletic expects Sermon to have a spot on the initial 53-man roster despite missing the final two preseason games and the past couple weeks of practice. The running back was injured during the first quarter of the Colts' preseason opener, after reports out of training camp pegged him as a favorite for the second spot on the depth chart. It's a role that doesn't figure to entail many touches when Jonathan Taylor is healthy, and there's some chance Sermon's absence will lead the Colts to turn to Evan Hull and/or Tyler Goodson instead. The team may even put Sermon on injured reserve if he won't be ready for Week 1, in which case he'd be ruled out for the first four games of the season.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Misses game with hamstring injury

Sermon (hamstring) did not play in Saturday's preseason win over Arizona.

Sermon left Indy's first preseason game Sunday with a hamstring injury. The severity of the injury isn't clear, but it's thought he'll be ready for the start of the regular season. Sermon had been the leader for the No. 2 RB role behind Jonathan Taylor prior to the injury, with Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull competing for the No. 3 role.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Misses practice

Sermon (hamstring) did not practice Thursday, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.

Sermon left Indy's first preseason game Sunday with a hamstring injury. The severity of the injury isn't clear, but it's not a good sign that he hasn't returned to practice this week. He seems unlikely to play in the team's second preseason game Saturday. Sermon had been the leader for the No. 2 RB role behind Jonathan Taylor prior to the injury, with Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull competing for the No. 3 role.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Exits preseason opener with injury

Sermon won't return to Sunday's exhibition contest against Denver due to a hamstring injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Sermon headed to the medical tent in the first quarter and has since been ruled out from returning. The severity of his hamstring injury isn't yet clear, but it could impact his availability for the remainder of the preseason slate and potentially prevent him from being ready for the start of the regular season as well. Sermon had been the leader for the No. 2 RB role behind Jonathan Taylor prior to the injury, with Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull lining up in the pecking order below him.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Leader for backup RB role

Sermon appears to be the clear frontrunner for the backup role to Jonathan Taylor, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports. "He's doing some really good things here," head coach Shane Steichen said. "Really good in pass pro, I've been impressed with that, with the third-down stuff, and also, running and seeing the hole has been good."

The Colts showed their confidence in Sermon by not drafting a running back or signing a prominent undrafted free agent to compete for the backup role. He's competing with Evan Hull and Tyler Goodson for playing time behind Taylor. Hull and Goodson may be competing for a limited third-down receiving role, and it's not clear both will make the final roster.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Poised for backup role

With the Colts not taking a running back in the 2024 Draft, Sermon and Evan Hull are the primary backups to starter Jonathan Taylor, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.

It was a mild surprise that the Colts didn't draft a running back or sign a prominent undrafted free agent to compete for the starting role. It's possible the Colts will sign a veteran free agent this spring for depth, but at this point Sermon could have a prominent backup role. He rushed 35 times, including 17 carries in Week 15, for 160 yards to go along with three catches for 13 yards with Indy last season.
