  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Minimal involvement in Week 1 loss

Sermon did not log a rushing attempt or draw a target during Sunday's 29-27 loss to the Texans. Sermon handled the No. 2 role behind Jonathan Taylor versus Houston, playing five offensive snaps while Tyler Goodson didn't take the field. No running back aside from Taylor, who rushed 16 times for 48 yards and a touchdown, factored into the game plan for Indianapolis' opener, but Sermon should mix in more frequently going forward. More opportunities could come Week 2 against a Packers defense that allowed 132 yards from scrimmage and three TDs to Saquon Barkley in Week 1.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Not on injury report

Sermon (hamstring) wasn't listed on the Colts' injury report Wednesday. Sermon has evidently moved past the hamstring issue that sidelined him last month, and as a result is in line to be available to back up starting running back Jonathan Taylor in Sunday's season opener versus the Texans. Tyler Goodson is also on hand as a reserve option, though neither Sermon or Goodson is likely to garner a high volume of weekly touches as long as Taylor is available.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Returns to practice

Sermon (hamstring) returned to practice Wednesday, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports. Sermon injured his hamstring Aug. 11 during the Colts' preseason opener, after reports from the first two weeks of training camp suggested he was the favorite for the No. 2 role in the backfield. He's now one of three backs on the roster after Tuesday's cutdowns, joined by starter Jonathan Taylor and 23-year-old Tyler Goodson. As the roster currently stands, Sermon presumably would get most of the carries in the event of a Taylor injury, with Goodson then handling passing situations and more of the targets.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Misses another week

Sermon (hamstring) didn't play in Thursday's 27-14 preseason win over the Bengals. James Boyd of The Athletic expects Sermon to have a spot on the initial 53-man roster despite missing the final two preseason games and the past couple weeks of practice. The running back was injured during the first quarter of the Colts' preseason opener, after reports out of training camp pegged him as a favorite for the second spot on the depth chart. It's a role that doesn't figure to entail many touches when Jonathan Taylor is healthy, and there's some chance Sermon's absence will lead the Colts to turn to Evan Hull and/or Tyler Goodson instead. The team may even put Sermon on injured reserve if he won't be ready for Week 1, in which case he'd be ruled out for the first four games of the season.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Misses game with hamstring injury

Sermon (hamstring) did not play in Saturday's preseason win over Arizona. Sermon left Indy's first preseason game Sunday with a hamstring injury. The severity of the injury isn't clear, but it's thought he'll be ready for the start of the regular season. Sermon had been the leader for the No. 2 RB role behind Jonathan Taylor prior to the injury, with Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull competing for the No. 3 role.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Misses practice

Sermon (hamstring) did not practice Thursday, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports. Sermon left Indy's first preseason game Sunday with a hamstring injury. The severity of the injury isn't clear, but it's not a good sign that he hasn't returned to practice this week. He seems unlikely to play in the team's second preseason game Saturday. Sermon had been the leader for the No. 2 RB role behind Jonathan Taylor prior to the injury, with Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull competing for the No. 3 role.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Exits preseason opener with injury

Sermon won't return to Sunday's exhibition contest against Denver due to a hamstring injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Sermon headed to the medical tent in the first quarter and has since been ruled out from returning. The severity of his hamstring injury isn't yet clear, but it could impact his availability for the remainder of the preseason slate and potentially prevent him from being ready for the start of the regular season as well. Sermon had been the leader for the No. 2 RB role behind Jonathan Taylor prior to the injury, with Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull lining up in the pecking order below him.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Leader for backup RB role

Sermon appears to be the clear frontrunner for the backup role to Jonathan Taylor, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports. "He's doing some really good things here," head coach Shane Steichen said. "Really good in pass pro, I've been impressed with that, with the third-down stuff, and also, running and seeing the hole has been good." The Colts showed their confidence in Sermon by not drafting a running back or signing a prominent undrafted free agent to compete for the backup role. He's competing with Evan Hull and Tyler Goodson for playing time behind Taylor. Hull and Goodson may be competing for a limited third-down receiving role, and it's not clear both will make the final roster.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Poised for backup role

With the Colts not taking a running back in the 2024 Draft, Sermon and Evan Hull are the primary backups to starter Jonathan Taylor, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports. It was a mild surprise that the Colts didn't draft a running back or sign a prominent undrafted free agent to compete for the starting role. It's possible the Colts will sign a veteran free agent this spring for depth, but at this point Sermon could have a prominent backup role. He rushed 35 times, including 17 carries in Week 15, for 160 yards to go along with three catches for 13 yards with Indy last season.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Re-signs with Indy

The Colts re-signed Sermon on Thursday, JJ Stankevitz of the team's official site reports. In 14 games for the Colts during the 2023 regular season, Sermon rushed 35 times (including 17 carries in Week 15) for 160 yards to go along with three catches for 13 yards. With Zack Moss now with the Bengals, Sermon will have a chance to carve out a complementary role behind starter Jonathan Taylor in 2024, but chances are Indianapolis will add further backfield depth via free agency or the draft.

  • Trey Sermon: Not tendered by Colts

Sermon wasn't tendered by the Colts, making him an unrestricted free agent, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Sermon rushed 35 times for 160 yards as a member of the Colts in 2023, but the team didn't retain his rights as a restricted free agent, even after watching fellow running back Zack Moss sign with the Bengals in free agency. Sermon will look to sign with another team and compete for a roster spot in camp.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Won't play versus Houston

Sermon (coach's decision) is inactive for Saturday's game against the Texans, Raven Moore of the Colts' official site reports. The move comes with Zack Moss (forearm) returning from a two-game absence for the regular-season finale. Sermon saw the field in spells due to both Moss and Jonathan Taylor missing time this season. He'll finish the regular season with 160 rushing yards on 35 carries while adding three catches for 13 yards over 14 games.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Has 32 yards rushing in win

Sermon had five carries for 32 yards and two receptions for nine yards on two targets in Sunday's win over the Raiders. Sermon played 18 snaps on offense as he got playing time late in the game when Jonathan Taylor was briefly banged up. Sermon looks set to be the primary ball carrier behind Taylor with Zack Moss (forearm) out, while Tyler Goodson works in a pass-catching role among the backup running backs.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Just two carries in loss

Sermon had two carries for three yards in Sunday's 29-10 loss to Atlanta. Both Goodson and Trey Sermon played 14 snaps on offense in reserve roles behind Jonathan Taylor (thumb), who made his return from a three-game absence while Zack Moss (forearm) sat out Sunday. Goodson, who had one carry and two receptions, drew more opportunities than Sermon, but both were used sparingly with Taylor available again. Sermon looks to be the top runner behind Taylor while Goodson profiles as superior pass-catching options, but both could see their roles on offense disappear entirely if Moss is able to play Week 17 against the Raiders.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Week 16 Waiver Priority List

The Colts are hopeful Jonathan Taylor (thumb) and Zack Moss (shoulder) can play in Week 16 at Atlanta, but if both are out then Sermon and Tyler Goodson (1 percent rostered) would share the workload for Indianapolis. That's what happened in Week 15 against Pittsburgh with Taylor out and when Moss got hurt. Sermon led the team with 17 carries for 88 yards, and Goodson added 11 carries for 69 yards and two catches for 10 yards on two targets. I'd lean toward Sermon as the one to add, but both Colts running backs are worth monitoring in case Taylor and Moss can't play in Week 16.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Thrust into large role in Week 15

Sermon racked up 88 yards on 17 carries during Saturday's 30-13 win versus the Steelers. Prior to Week 15, Sermon had just 11 rushes through his first 11 appearances of the campaign, but after Zack Moss (arm) exited early in the second quarter, the former earned the second-highest carry count in a game in his three-year career. Even subtracting his game-high 19-yard scamper, Sermon still averaged 4.3 yards on his 16 other rushes. Also out of the Colts backfield Saturday, the elevated Tyler Goodson totaled 13 touches for 79 yards from scrimmage. The top of Indianapolis' RB depth chart includes question marks for both Jonathan Taylor (thumb) and Moss, but there seems to be a chance for the former to return next weekend. If neither are available, though, Sermon and Goodson likely would be the team's primary runners Sunday, Dec. 24 in Atlanta.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Gets three carries in loss

Sermon had three carries for 13 yards in Sunday's loss at Cinncinati. Sermon played just three snaps on offense while Tyler Goodson played on six snaps. It's not clear Sermon would be the lead back if both Zack Moss and Jonathan Taylor (thumb) were out.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Sliding up to No. 2 on depth chart

Sermon is expected to work as the top backup to Zack Moss for the duration of No. 1 running back Jonathan Taylor's absence while Taylor recovers from thumb surgery, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. Taylor sustained the thumb injury in this past Sunday's win over the Buccaneers and appears likely to miss multiple games, potentially even requiring a stint on injured reserve. Sermon previously backed up Moss when Taylor opened the season on PUP list while recovering from ankle surgery, but Sermon hasn't had more than six touches in a game this season. Per Stephen Holder of ESPN.com, head coach Shane Steichen said the Colts don't plan to sign a running back to compete with Sermon, though Steichen also suggested that Moss will see the overwhelming majority of backfield touches, as was the case during Taylor's prior absence.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Plays just three snaps

Sermon did not have a carry or target in Sunday's win over Tennessee. He played three snaps on offense. It was bit of a surprise that Sermon was on the field on offense with the return of Jonathan Taylor from an ankle injury. He should have a minimal role as long as Taylor and Zack Moss are healthy.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Gets three carries in loss

Sermon had three carries for seven yards in Sunday's overtime loss to the Rams. Sermon played on 10 of the offense's 64 snaps as the backup to Zack Moss, who played 53 snaps on offense. Sermon may not play any snaps on offense this week if Jonathan Taylor (ankle) is activated from the reserve/PUP list.
