Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence: Sees second-half downturn Sunday

Lawrence completed 12 of 21 passes for 162 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions while adding one rush for eight yards in the Jaguars' 20-17 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.
Lawrence had the Jaguars' offense clicking early, helping lead Jacksonville to 17 first-half points via a trio of impressive drives. He capped the second one of those off with a 14-yard touchdown pass to rookie Brian Thomas, but he was a different quarterback in the second half. The Dolphins defense turned up the heat and made Lawrence uncomfortable, particularly in the fourth quarter when the Jaguars were badly in need of some points to fend off Miami's ultimately successful rally. He displayed the most chemistry with his two new pass catchers -- Thomas and Gabe Davis -- who combined for seven receptions, 109 yards and a touchdown -- while only finding the incumbent duo of Christian Kirk and Evan Engram on two of eight passes. Lawrence and the Jaguars will look to regroup ahead of a Week 2 home matchup against the Browns next Sunday.

Lawrence played two drives and capped each with a touchdown pass to Evan Engram. Lawrence played one drive in the preseason opener at Kansas City and none in Saturday's exhibition win over Tampa Bay. It sounds like he'll get a lot more work in the final tune-up before a Week 1 matchup with Miami.

Lawrence was in on the Jaguars' first two possessions and looked sharp during his time on the field, leading the Jaguars to an opening-drive touchdown that came via a nine-yard scoring pass to Travis Etienne. Lawrence's third and final completion of the night notably came to offseason addition Gabe Davis for 20 yards to open the second drive of the game, and the overall play of the first-team members of Jacksonville's offense was encouraging. Lawrence could be in for even more playing time in the Jags' second preseason game next Saturday night at home against the Buccaneers.

It doesn't sound like Lawrence will get enough run to be a desirable option in preseasons DFS contests, but fantasy players may be interested to see him take the field with new wide receivers Gabe Davis and Brian Thomas. It's not clear the latter will get much first-team work at this point, but the Jaguars figure to give their rookie first-round pick a good look at some point this year even if Parker Washington gets more snaps early on (which is far from a sure thing).

Lawrence suited up for one less game last season after playing all 17 in 2022, but despite Ridley's presence atop the depth chart, he took a step back in terms of passing yards (4,016 vs. 4,113), touchdowns (21 vs. 25), and increased his interception total (14 vs. eight). That said, the loss of Ridley to free agency still represents a knock to Lawrence's prospects for 2024, especially with Zay Jones also being a speculated cap casualty. The addition of Gabe Davis from Buffalo, who joins Christian Kirk (groin), does something to mitigate those concerns, and the Jaguars still have plenty of time to make further moves in free agency or April's draft.

He's scored 16.7 Fantasy points or less in each of his past two outings against Baltimore in Week 15 and Tampa Bay in Week 16. The Titans have also allowed just one quarterback to score more than 14.9 Fantasy points in their past four games, and Tennessee would love to play spoiler in this game to knock Jacksonville out of the playoffs.
