Top Senators News

  • Senators' Tim Stutzle: Good to go

Stutzle (shoulder) feels good ahead of the 2024-25 season, per Claire Hanna of TSN.

Stutzle dealt with shoulder and wrist issues during the 2023-24 campaign while supplying 18 goals and 70 points in 75 regular-season contests. If he remains healthy, the 22-year-old forward could return to the 39-goal, 90-point pace he showcased in 2022-23. Stutzle will likely log heavy minutes in the upcoming campaign while skating on the first line and the top power-play unit.

  • Senators' Thomas Chabot: Ready to rock

Chabot (wrist) will be available for the start of the 2024-25 season, per TSN 1200 Ottawa.

Chabot feels good to go for training camp after dealing with a wrist issue for the better part of two years. He produced nine goals, 30 points, 118 shots on net, 88 blocked shots and 44 hits across 51 regular-season appearances in 2023-24. If Chabot can stay healthy, he could be a solid multi-category contributor for fantasy managers in the upcoming campaign.

  • Senators' Alex Formenton: Reportedly ends hockey career

Formenton (personal) is not pursuing a hockey contract in 2024-25 while awaiting a September 2025 trial for charges of sexual assault from an alleged incident that occurred during a 2018 Hockey Canada event, Steve Warne of The Hockey News reports.

Two of the other players facing charges from that incident, Dillon Dube and Michael McLeod, have signed KHL contracts for 2024-25. Formenton is instead working in construction, and given that he is two years removed from any NHL action, it is unlikely he will resume his playing career once his trial is complete. Ontario Superior Court Justice Bruce Thomas said, "It is clear each of the applicants has a need to work or find work not only to sustain themselves, but to pay their expenses, which at this point include legal fees." Formenton will remain on the Senators' reserve list as an unsigned player until his signing rights lapse Sept. 13, 2026. All four of the other players facing charges were effectively released by their teams in June when none of them received a qualifying offer, but Formenton's status is different since he has played overseas the last two seasons while not signed to an NHL contract.

  • Senators' Nikolay Kulemin: Signs PTO

Kulemin inked a professional tryout agreement with the Senators on Thursday.

Kulemin hasn't played in North America since the 2017-18 campaign. He had 13 goals and 25 points in 46 regular-season outings with the KHL's Ufa Salavat Yulayev in 2023-24. At his height in the NHL, Kulemin had 30 goals and 57 points in 82 contests with the Maple Leafs in 2010-11, but at the age of 38, he's unlikely to serve in more than a bottom-six role if he makes the Senators' roster at all.

  • Senators' Calen Addison: Secures tryout

Addison penned a professional tryout agreement with Ottawa on Thursday.

Addison saw action in 60 games for the Sharks last season in which he tallied one goal and 11 assists while averaging 17:21 of ice time. The 24-year-old blueliner didn't quite live up to his 2022-23 numbers when he posted 29 points in 62 contests while with the Wild. Still, the Manitoba native could be given some leeway for having struggled on the worst team in the league last year. If Ottawa can get 30 points out of Addison in 2024-25, he will be well worth whatever full contract the club might give him.

  • Senators' Josh Norris: Slated to be ready for camp

Norris (shoulder) is on track to be a full participant during training camp, general manager Steve Staios told Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia on Wednesday.

Norris didn't play past Feb. 27 last season due to his shoulder injury. He had 16 goals and 30 points in 50 outings with the Senators in 2023-24. Provided the 25-year-old is healthy, Norris should serve in a top-six capacity and as a member of the first power-play unit.

  • Senators' Nick Cousins: Agrees to one-year deal

Cousins inked a one-year, $800,000 contract with Ottawa on Thursday, RDS.ca reports.

Cousins will be suiting up for his seventh NHL franchise over the course of his 10-year NHL career, having most recently won the Stanley Cup with the Panthers. With Florida last year, he saw action in 69 regular-season contests in which he generated seven goals and eight assists while dishing out 129 hits. Look for Cousins to fill a bottom-six role with his new team that won't include power-play minutes. As such, his fantasy impact figures to be minimal at best.

  • Senators' Travis Hamonic: Recovers from injury

Hamonic is considered fully healthy after undergoing a knee surgery, Steve Warne of The Hockey News reports.

Hamonic missed 24 of Ottawa's final 25 games last season. The 34-year-old defenseman has been absent for significant stretches of three of the past four campaigns, so it's tough to see him exceeding the 70-game mark in 2024-25, especially given his propensity to block shots. Hamonic will be competing with Jacob Bernard-Docker for a third-pairing spot in 2024-25.

  • Senators' Carter Yakemchuk: Signs entry-level deal

Yakemchuk signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Ottawa on Tuesday.

Yakemchuk produced 30 goals, 71 points and 120 PIM in 66 regular-season contests for WHL Calgary in 2023-24. The 18-year-old defender will likely return to the junior ranks for the upcoming campaign. The Senators selected Yakemchuk with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

  • Senators' Jake Chiasson: Dealt by Edmonton

Ottawa acquired Chiasson and Xavier Bourgault from Edmonton on Monday in exchange for Roby Jarventie and a 2025 fourth-round pick.

Chiasson notched nine goals and 20 points in 68 regular-season contests with ECHL Fort Wayne in 2023-24. He also earned two PIM and a minus-1 rating in one AHL appearance with Bakersfield during the regular season. The 21-year-old forward doesn't have any NHL experience yet. Chiasson will likely begin the 2024-25 campaign in the minors.

  • Senators' Xavier Bourgault: Acquired in trade

Ottawa obtained Bourgault and Jake Chiasson from Edmonton on Monday in exchange for Roby Jarventie and a 2025 fourth-round pick.

Bourgault produced eight goals and 20 points in 55 regular-season appearances for AHL Bakersfield in 2023-24. The 21-year-old forward hasn't seen any NHL action since being the No. 22 overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He will compete for a bottom-six spot with the Senators during training camp.

  • Senators' Mads Sogaard: Signs two-year deal

Sogaard signed a two-year, $1.55 million contract with Ottawa on Monday.

Sogaard posted an 18-9-3 record with two shutouts, a 2.45 GAA and a .916 save percentage in 32 regular-season outings for AHL Belleville in 2023-24. The 23-year-old netminder also went 1-3-0 with a 4.04 GAA and an .859 save percentage in six NHL appearances with Ottawa last season. Sogaard will likely begin the upcoming season in the minors, as Linus Ullmark and Anton Forsberg are expected to open the year as the Senators' NHL goalies.

  • Senators' Jan Jenik: Grabs two-way deal

Jenik penned a one-year, two-way contract with Ottawa on Friday.

Jenik saw action in just five NHL games for the Coyotes last season, tallying one assist, six hits and two shots while averaging a mere 8:23 of ice time. The 23-year-old center will get a new start with the Senators after the organization acquired him in a minor-league swap from Utah HC on Wednesday. Still, even with his new team, the Czech will likely be hard-pressed to secure regular minutes at the NHL level and figures to spend the bulk of the campaign in the minors.

  • Senators' Jan Jenik: Acquired in trade

Jenik was acquired by the Senators from Utah HC on Wednesday in exchange for Egor Sokolov.

Jenik had 16 goals and 36 points in 55 regular-season contests with AHL Tucson in 2023-24. He also registered an assist in five outings with Arizona. Jenik might get a long look during training camp, but it will be difficult for the 23-year-old to make Ottawa's Opening Night roster.

  • Senators' Matthew Andonovski: Agrees to entry-level contract

Andonovski signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Senators on Wednesday.

Andonovski was selected by Ottawa with the 140 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. He had seven goals, 32 points and 124 PIM in 65 regular-season outings with OHL Kitchener in 2023-24. The 19-year-old also recorded an assist and 14 PIM in 10 playoff games with the junior club.

  • Senators' Shane Pinto: Staying in Ottawa

Pinto signed a two-year, $7.5 million contract with the Senators on Tuesday.

After some concern that Pinto would request a trade or be priced out of the Senators' budget, the two sides were able to get a bridge deal done. Pinto had 27 points, including six on the power play, over 41 contests in 2023-24. The 23-year-old should be a consistent top-six presence in 2024-25, and he could be poised for a breakout year. He will be a restricted free agent at the conclusion of the contract.

  • Senators' Adam Gaudette: Signs two-way deal

Gaudette signed a one-year, two-way contract with Ottawa on Tuesday.

Gaudette accumulated 44 goals and 71 points in 67 regular-season contests for AHL Springfield in 2023-24. He notched four goals and 12 points in 50 regular-season appearances with Ottawa during the 2021-22 campaign. The 27-year-old forward will compete for a depth spot on the roster at training camp, but it wouldn't be surprising if he started 2024-25 in the minors.

  • Senators' Hayden Hodgson: Secures one-year deal

Hodgson put pen to paper on a one-year, two-way contract with the Senators on Tuesday.

Hodgson failed to get into an NHL game last season, spending the entirety of the campaign in the minors with AHL Ontario. For the Reign, the 28-year-old winger notched six goals and 10 assists in 49 regular-season contests. While Hodgson should be on the list of potential call-ups next year, he figures once again to spend the bulk of the campaign in the minors.

  • Senators' Filip Roos: Snags two-way deal

Roos penned a one-year, two-way contract with Ottawa on Tuesday.

Roos was limited to just four NHL games for the Blackhawks last season, registering zero points, two shots and eight hits while averaging 14:44 of ice time. While he likely faces an uphill battle, the 25-year-old Swede should at least have a chance of making the Opening Night roster as a third-pairing defenseman.
