CLEVELAND, Ohio – In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day, giving all Americans the excuse to enjoy a bowl or a cone filled with cold, creamy goodness – in spite of the calories.
Not that many Americans need to look for an excuse to eat the frozen treat. We’ve been in love with ice cream since the Quaker colonists arrived on our shores, bringing their ice cream recipes with them.
Today, 87 percent of Americans keep ice cream in their freezers at home at any one time.
And then there is the story that two brothers from Akron are responsible for inventing the ice cream cone – that edible portable “handle” that gave us all the opportunity to enjoy ice cream no matter where we are!
As we approach National Ice Cream Day on July 21, cleveland.com’s Best Of team, Yadi Rodriguez and Brenda Cain, want to inspire you to celebrate America’s favorite dessert.
Last summer, we got a sneak peek, er, taste of all of the flavors available on opening day at the Cleveland area’s first Graeter’s. We spooned through each flavor, and then ranked them. Check out what we thought, then hit them up for your own taste test.
