University of Houston holds 9/11 memorial event on 23rd anniversary

HOUSTON – It’s been 23 years since the tragic events on September 11, when hijacked planes crashed at the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania killing nearly 3,000 people in 2001.

The catastrophic event is etched in our memories as the pain and disbelief remain present. This is why on this day, we reflect on the tragedy and honor the victims and heroes of September 11th.

A remembrance event was held at the University of Houston Wednesday at 9 a.m. on the South Lawn of the Student Center, where there’s a steel beam from the Twin Towers.

If you will be taking part in any remembrances, here is the timeline of that fateful morning with the key moments listed in Central/Houston time.

  • 7:46 a.m. CT - American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of New York City’s World Trade Center.
  • 8:03 a.m. CT - United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
  • 8:37 a.m. CT - American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
  • 8:59 a.m. CT - The South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed.
  • 9:03 a.m. CT - United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
  • 9:28 a.m. CT - The North Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed.
