As an Australian living in the UK, beach holidays, and the consequential sand that comes with them, were a big part of my childhood growing up. It wasn't Christmas holidays unless my feet were permanently covered in sand. My husband and three-year-old son however, are true Londoners and thus are not a fan of the feeling of sand between their toes post-beach.
To make things even trickier, my son is slightly scared of showers, which makes a quick rinse off at the beach a much more dramatic ordeal than it needs to be. Nor is he willing to sit still long enough to be tediously dusted off with a towel. Which means inevitably, sand ends up coming back to our hotel room with us, much to my husband's chagrin.
On the hunt for a solution to this beach conundrum before a recent family trip to the Maldives, I discovered Beach Powder on Amazon. There are a couple of these type of products on the market but Beach Powder is seemingly the original invention, appearing on Dragon's Den.
Made from a mixture of plant and mineral powders, and – despite how it appears – completely talc-free, the powder works by absorbing moisture on the skin so that the sand falls off easily. This particular formula is also scented with vanilla and once rubbed off, leaves the skin feeling silky and smooth. It works fast too, enough for me to quickly dust off an energetic three-year-old, although I did find it tricky to use on feet and in between toes – in this instance a quick tap rinse does a better and faster job. It also feels incredibly gentle, and didn't irritate my son's sensitive skin.
For an extra bit of glamour, the brand even has a shimmer formula, which when applied, leaves the skin with a subtle glitter-effect on it. This formula is also natural and plastic-free, so perfectly fine to use on the beach or wear into the water. Whichever you prefer, this for me is now a beach bag essential.
