Cons
  • Too firm, per some reviewers

Don’t sleep (heh) on Amazon when it comes to nice mattresses! This near five-star rated option with over 4,000 glowing reviews has won the hearts of thousands of customers. It has a unique, flippable design, which means you have two mattresses in one. The plush side of it is incredibly soft and gives off that “sinking in” feel, while the other offers a medium-firm support. Great for any type of sleeper, with this mattress, you can have the best of both worlds.

Glowing customer review: Get this mattress. You won’t regret it. I bought it for our master bedroom three years ago and it is holding up amazingly (and my husband is a large man). We love it so much that we have since bought one for our guest bedroom and recommended it to other family members. They have bought it as well and are very happy with their purchase. It feels so soft, is comfortable, and is structured enough to give great spine support. My lower back pain went away after upgrading to this."

Pros
  • Compatible with most frames
  • Breathable cover
Cons
  • Edges aren't supportive, per some reviewers

What if I told you this mattress will feel like it was made just for you? Sounds too good to be true, I know! But the adaptive and open-cell structure of this Tuft & Needle mattress legit moves with your body and adjusts with you to help provide pressure relief. It only gets better… On top of that, it has cooling technology that’s infused with cooling gel and heat-conducting graphite for a comfortable night’s sleep. According to the brand, it’s recommended specifically for back and stomach sleepers!

Glowing customer review: This is our fifth time buying a T&N original so we're due for a review. We have them as all the mattresses in our house and even bought one for the guest room at my in-laws to get a good night's sleep when staying there! We find them very comfortable and they hold up well; this purchase was to replace the first one that we've been sleeping on regularly for nearly a decade and finally started getting less comfortable due to compression dents where we lay. No complaints!

Beautyrest Harmony

Harmony

Pros
  • AirCool Foam ensures airflow and breathability
  • White glove delivery included
Cons
  • Too plush, per some reviewers

You'll be happy to hear that this mattress is earth-friendly. Its top surface layer is made with recycled plastic hand-collected from coastlines and ocean-bound waterways—and yep, it’s super soft. It also offers head-to-toe support thanks to the brand's exclusive Precision Support System which consists of individually pocketed coils—aka coils that’ll each conform to your body for the most supportive and responsive experience. The Harmony mattress in particular has T1 pocketed coils in the center third of the mattress (aka the lower back region)" for extra support.

Glowing customer review: I must say the Beautyrest Harmony Cypress Bay is amazing! I am thoroughly impressed. This medium-firm mattress has been a game-changer for my sleep routine. One of the key factors for me is its excellent back support and it has lived up to its promise. I wake up every morning without any back pain, which is a huge relief. The mattress's height is perfect, catering to both short and tall individuals. Its balanced elevation has contributed significantly to the overall comfort level. Despite continuous use, I have also noticed no dips or bows, which speaks volumes about its durability and quality. The Beautyrest Harmony Cypress Bay has exceeded my expectations, offering a comfortable and pain-free sleep experience. I highly recommend it to anyone searching for a reliable, supportive, and long-lasting mattress.

Pros
  • Protected by a chemical-free and fiberglass-free fire barrier
  • Payment plan available
Cons
  • According to some customers, it feels hard

If you consider yourself a Goldilocks type of sleeper (aka someone who wants a mattress that’s not too firm, yet not too soft, but something that’s juuuust right) then look no further. This highly raved-about medium-firm mattress has a four-layer construction that consists of a breathable, cooling knit cover, contouring memory foam, pressure-relieving transitional foam, and a high-density support foam. It’s supportive—especially for the hips and shoulders—without having to sacrifice a plush feel. A medium-firm mattress like this one is ideal for side and combination sleepers as its perfect balance of firm and soft allows for ultra-comfy body contouring.

Glowing customer review: The Leesa Studio Mattress is heaven-sent. It's like sleeping on a cloud. It conforms perfectly to my body and provides an unparalleled sleeping experience. It's easily the comfiest mattress I've slept on. The only problem is that it's becoming hard to get up in the morning because I'm so comfy! Thank you, Leesa, for an affordable luxury mattress.

Nora by Wayfair Sleep Nora 12" Medium Memory Foam Mattress

Pros
  • Each layer is infused with green tea extract which helps make it last longer
  • Comes compressed in a box
Cons
  • Per some reviews, it doesn't fit adjustable beds

Calling all sweaty sleepers! This mattress with a cooling gel-infused memory foam and a cover made of cooling fibers will make sure that you’re not overheating while you’re catching Z’s. Because of its plush top layer and supportive base layer, you get that sweet combination that’s not too bouncy or stiff. The brand says that using a mattress topper is fine with this style, but be wary that if you do, it could lessen its cooling effect. Depending on your preference, it’s available in two thicknesses: 12-inch and 14-inch.

Glowing customer review: I am absolutely in love with this mattress. I had previously bought another well-known and very expensive mattress for my main bedroom. I continue to find myself in my guest bedroom sleeping on this mattress instead. It has just the right amount of support while still being plush and comfortable. I have significantly less back pain and find I can sleep for longer periods. It is cool to the touch but I stay warm on those long winter nights in the North country. I have not noticed any sagging and I've been sleeping on this mattress for 2 years now. All of my friends who have stayed with me end up sleeping in and then reporting that they had the best night's sleep that they can remember. The design is beautiful. I just adore this mattress!! I will be buying another one to replace the one in my main bedroom. I will forever sleep on a Nora mattress.

Silk and Snow The S&S Mattress

Pros
  • Has an antimicrobial cover which inhibits bacteria growth
  • Free shipping and returns
Cons
  • Has an unusual smell, according to some reviewers

Now a five-star rated mattress means it's gotta be the crème de la crème. The best-selling S&S mattress is a luxurious option made with high-density memory foam which makes it even more durable and supportive compared to others. Because it has more foam packed into a cubic foot it reacts slower than other memory foam which offers more support as there's less of an instant sinking effect. Side sleepers will love this one as it targets hip and shoulder pressing points. FYI: High-density memory foam mattresses are known to not retain heat as well, but this one uses open-cell memory foam infused with cooling gel!

Glowing customer review: I have been sleeping on the mattress for eight months. The mattress still remains oddly firm and yet soft at the same time. I sleep through the night and even find myself sleeping in on the weekend now and then. I am 6' 2' and 220 lbs. and no longer wake up with that nagging back pain. The bed frame is solid and I never hear a squeak or any shift.

Wayfair Sleep 14 Inch Medium Hybrid Mattress

Pros
  • Compatible with an adjustable base
  • Available in six sizes (Twin XL to Cal King)
Cons
  • Per some reviewers, there's arrived torn

With this hybrid mattress, a wrapped-coil innerspring system and a gel-infused memory foam come together for a sturdy, long-lasting, and ultra-supportive foundation. Hybrid mattresses like this one are loved because of their plush and thick feel, even weight distribution, and their ability to support different body types. This incredibly affordable from Wayfair is also hypoallergenic and has optimized edged support, so you can comfortably sit at the edge/corners of the mattress and feel secure.

Glowing customer review: I purchased this as a less expensive alternative to a Dreamcloud mattress. I have low back pain, due to an SI joint issue, so was looking for something that would help alleviate back pain. This mattress definitely did it! I woke up after a long day of moving and my first night on this mattress and no back pain! Usually, it would be hard for me to stand up straight after a day like that due to the strain on my back. I'm very pleased that it cost three times less than the mattress I was going to get and still gave me the results I wanted! The mattress is soft, but firm enough for back support (I'm a stomach sleeper). It's a Goldilocks bed and it's just what I was looking for.

Pros
  • Compatible with an adjustable bed frame
  • CertiPUR-US certified BioFoam made from plants
Cons
  • Density isn't uniform, per some reviewers

This mattress comes in two different types of thickness levels: 11-inch and 13-inch, both of which are ideal for side sleepers. Its hefty makeup combined with medium soft/gentle firm firmness level options will prevent any sort of sinking and pain in the hips and shoulders. Bonus: This style is infused with charcoal which has natural cooling benefits that move moisture and heat away from the body.

Glowing customer review: This is the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on. I did a ton of research because I experience some lower back pain and this was definitely the winner. Whenever I’m at a hotel or someone else’s house I look forward to coming back and sleeping in my bed. It’s on the softer side without sacrificing being supportive.

Rejoice! This mattress was specifically made to target lower back pain and promote proper spinal alignment. It has multiple layers of memory foam to cradle your body and relieve painful pressure. BTW, it's also a hybrid mattress with an individually wrapped innerspring at the bottom layer for more stability. Other features include a hypoallergenic design, a quilted euro-top knit cover with a corded edge, and controlled edge support.

Glowing customer review: This bed is AMAZING. The mattress is so soft yet firm enough to where I don’t feel like I’m sinking in. My back pain is slowly starting to dissipate after sleeping on this mattress and I wake up feeling energized. I’m so glad I purchased it. It was well worth the price!

What to look for when shopping for the best mattresses under $1000:

cosmo line breaker
Cosmopolitan

When shopping for a mattress, you want to keep in mind your personal sleep style and preferences. We spend a third of our life sleeping apparently, so the experience should be the best of the best! And a big part of that is having a mattress that makes you feel comfortable and supported. Here are some things to look out for when you're buying your new mattress.

Mattress type and materials

It's important to know what your mattress is made of as it affects how it will feel and how much you will pay for it. Let’s get into the nitty-gritty information you should know about some of the common types of mattresses, shall we?

All-foam/memory foam mattresses
: You'll see that all-foam mattresses are the most popular type. Most mattresses are made of memory foam which molds to your body and has minimal motion transfer, making it a great pick for anyone who loves that sinking-in feeling or is sharing a bed with a partner who’s a light sleeper and can’t stand you tossing and turning (soz…). They also tend to be more affordable than most other types of mattresses. But because it naturally compresses and sinks, it’s also hard to move around on. Not to mention, memory foam isn’t always the most durable in terms of longevity and it tends to retain heat, making it a tough choice for sweaty sleepers (aka me).

Hybrid mattresses
: This type of mattress, is made up of two or more support systems, with the most typical style being a combination of both memory foam and innerspring coils. With a hybrid mattress, you’re able to get the best of both worlds: a plush, body-conforming layer and a sturdy, coiled one. The innerspring coils are at the bottom layer of the mattress and provide stronger support for more weight and therefore have a longer shelf life. A drawback to hybrid mattresses though is that they can get pretty pricey. But, it’s worth it if it means you won’t have to buy another mattress for a long time, IMO!

Latex mattresses: An all-natural mattress made from rubber tree sap, latex mattresses are hypoallergenic and known for their pressure relief capabilities. They are long-lasting, durable and, contouring, but more responsive to movement compared to all-foam/memory foam mattresses. Its open-cell structure makes it a cooling, breathable product too! (Sweaty sleepers, I’m talkin’ to you!)

Innerspring mattresses: The innerspring mattress is the most traditional one of them all. It consists of a metal coil support system that usually sits under a thin foam or cotton layer. It’s known for its super bouncy feel. It also sleeps cool because of the space between the springs which makes lots of room for airflow. Plus, it maintains its shape! Out of all the options you can choose from, this type is definitely the most cost-effective—so if you’re on a budget and don’t have a preference for a mattress, go for this style!

Sleeping position

Ask yourself: What is your predominant sleeping position? Whether you usually sleep on your back, stomach, or side, each sleeping position needs particular types of support and firmness levels from your mattress.

If you’re a back sleeper
: A medium-firm mattress is ideal as it conforms to your body and keeps your spine supported. You want a mattress that’ll hug the natural curvature of your spine, so getting a mattress that has a balance of soft and firm is perfect.

If you’re a side sleeper: Side sleepers put a lot of pressure on their hips, shoulders, and neck while sleeping which results in pressure on the spine. Overall, this can lead to pain and body aches at those pressure points. A mattress on the firmer side can make these spots feel really harsh and can even cut off circulation in those areas. Therefore, a softer mattress (but not too soft as you don’t wanna mess up your spine’s natural alignment) would be the best decision in this case as it will cradle the hips and shoulders while still supporting the spine.

If you’re a stomach sleeper: For stomach sleepers, a mattress on the firmer end will feel the most comfortable. A firm mattress will maintain the best possible alignment while you’re laying face-down. You don’t want the mattress to be too soft as this position pulls your spine down and creates an exaggerated curve. It’ll also keep the hips elevated, thus minimizing the risk of lower back pain. Stomach sleepers are often hot sleepers, and if this sounds like you, look into ones that have cooling features.

Trial period, returns, and warranty policies

Make sure that the company you're buying your mattress from offers a trial period and has a long warranty policy. I can't stress that enough! A mattress isn't a cheap buy and it takes some time (weeks to months!) to see if it's the right fit for you. Tons of brands offer 100+ days trial periods, free shipping and returns, and 10+ year warranties so you have time to test your mattress. So to ensure that you're getting your money's worth, read the fine print!

Is a $1,000 mattress worth it?

cosmo line breaker
Cosmopolitan

In my opinion, if there's anything you should be splurging and investing in it's your sleep. I mean, a good night’s sleep is everything! Many mattresses over $1,000 come with standout features like cooling gel grid structures (looking at you, Purple Hyprid Premier Mattress) and breathable, knitted covers. But, of course, there are tons of great mattresses with top-rated reviews for under $1,000 (I mean, this story is chockful of ‘em!)—and a lot of them will even have those sought-after features. So while a fancy-schmancy, expensive mattress might be worth the splurge, know that you won’t necessarily have to throw down that much cash to get the mattress of your dreams. Instead, shop any of these under-$1,000 gems!
