Then, step right up—or lie down comfortably, actually—for the lazy dog sex position. “Some say lazy, I say energy-saving!” says Samantha Marshall, marketing director and in-house sex educator at Smile Makers. “The lazy dog is for those times when you want to save some energy because you’re both sleepy but horny, or want a break during a long, lively sex session.”
Lazy dog isn’t exactly doggy, but it’s definitely doggy adjacent. “Think collapsed doggy style,” says Marshall. “One partner lies flat on their belly while the other lies on top, vaginally or anally penetrating them.” And it’s got a lot to offer! In addition to being comfortable, the lazy dog can feel much more romantic than regular doggy. "Since the giver is laying on top of the receiving partner, both people get a lot of skin-to-skin contact, which heightens intimacy,” says sex educator Searah Deysach, owner of Early to Bed. “The giver can also cover the bottom partner’s neck and back with tender kisses.”
Plus if you’re the bottom person, having someone cover you like that can be incredibly comforting—like a weighted blanket, but sexy. It also has less of an animalistic vibe than classic doggy, if that element of it tends to turn you off. “The lazy dog provides a more sustained kind of penetration. Rather than focusing on fast thrusting, it encourages small, deeper motions,” says Marshall. It’s great for fans of slow sex, sleepy morning sex, or languid weekend sex.
Although this position doesn’t have space for a ton of clit stimulation—of which a majority of people with vulvas need to climax—there are workarounds. Marshall recommends slipping a flattish vibrator between the bed and the bottom person’s clitoris. A hand or something else to grind on works too.

Both of you lie flat facing down. The giver lies over the receiver’s back, resting most of their weight on their elbows and knees to minimize crushing their partner. “Play with how it feels for each partner to have their legs open or closed.
