Grocery store chain Stop & Shop said it would be closing 32 “underperforming” stores, including locations in Carlstadt, Ringwood and 8 other New Jersey sites by the end of this year.

“Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand,” Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said Friday in a statement.

Stop & Shop will continue to have more than 350 stores across its five-state footprint.

The chain has done remodels on nearly 200 of its stores since 2018, but ultimately "it's not enough, and it's not where we want to be or need to be," said Stop & Shop CEO JJ Fleeman.

All Stop & Shop workers will be offered other potential positions within the company, said spokesperson Daniel Wolk.
