The nostalgic hit movie, Independence Day, was first shown in cinemas in 1996. It marked a watershed moment for big-budget Hollywood blockbusters, while also reviving interest in disaster and science fiction films towards the end of the 90s.

For those unacquainted with the movie classic, it is all about an eclectic group of people who meet in the Nevada desert after Earth is ambushed by a formidable alien invasion.

This causes people over the world to band together to stage a defiant counter-offensive on July 4 - otherwise known in America as Independence Day.

While countless fans can recall every twist and turn, one detail seems to have slipped through the collective memory regarding a pivotal character.

Social media users have been left mindblown after Becky Tyler took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to reveal a startling casting fact about the much-loved movie.

In a shocking revelation, it appears we've all seen the actor who played the President's daughter before - we just never connected the dots. Becky confessed: "I was today years old when I realized that Mae Whitman was the president's daughter in the first Independence Day film."

As this bombshell spread across the web, people have been left mindblown. They're totally baffled that they overlooked the presence of such a notable actress for so long.

Despite Independence Day being nearly three decades old, fans are amazed they missed spotting Mae in her earlier role.

One social media user exclaimed: "Just had this same moment!" Meanwhile, another expressed their disappointment, stating: "I refused to see the sequel because they recast her part. Turns out there were plenty of other reasons not to see it."

Born to voice actor Pat Musick and Jeffrey Whitman, a personal manager and set construction coordinator, Mae has carved out her own successful path in acting. Beyond her on-screen achievements, she's candidly shared her battle with endometriosis - a condition that remained undiagnosed for over a decade.

She's appeared on our screens in various roles for decades, and people can't believe they're only now learning this wild fact about her. It seems film fanatics learn something new every day.
