When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle return from their visit to Colombia this summer, they are set to prepare for a significant milestone in their family life - sending their eldest child, Prince Archie, to school.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed Archie on May 6, 2019, and as he turned five this year, he is set to start school in the coming weeks. Their youngest, Princess Lilibet, is not of school age, and is only three years old.

In America, children begin kindergarten at elementary school at around the age of five or six, but pupils in the UK usually start compulsory education in reception in September, around four years of age.

Speaking to The Cut magazine in 2022, Meghan explained Archie already does full days at pre-school. She described him as "the cheerful kid who brings a week's worth of freshly picked fruit for his fellow classmates and enjoys playing a 'roaring' game at recess".

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have largely kept their children out of the public eye, will be navigating the transition from home life to school life as their son takes this important step in his early education.

While the Duke attended private schools in the UK, most notably the prestigious Eton College, which now has an annual fee of £52,749. Archie and Lilibet's schooling however, may be very different in America.

Montecito resident, Richard Mineards, told Hello! Magazine's 'A Right Royal Podcast': "We have very good schools, which are not like England public schools but they're state schools. And we have a very good one called Cold Spring School which has got great ratings and that's in their catchment area."

When Archie was born, proud father Harry said: "As every father and parent will ever say, you know, your baby is absolutely amazing, but this little thing is absolutely to die for, so I'm just over the moon."

Harry and Meghan then introduced Archie to the world just two days after his arrival in a brief photocall at Windsor Castle.

The couple's planned tour of Colombia will be their second major tour after stepping back as working royals.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are to visit the country at the invitation of the nation's vice president, Francia Marquez, travelling to the capital, Bogota, and coastal areas.

The VP said the pair will "have the exceptional opportunity to engage with elders, youth and women who embody the aspirations and voices of Colombians... and illuminate Colombia's role as a beacon of culture and innovation."

Details of the couple’s Colombian itinerary have not been released by the Archewell Foundation, their charitable body, but the vice president also said they would "engage in several activities" related to safeguarding young people online and in physical spaces.

Harry and Meghan received criticism for embarking upon a "royal" tour in Nigeria "all but in name" earlier this year - though many commentators hailed it as a success and a reminder of what the Firm has lost.

The Office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has been approached for comment.
