Prince William and Princess Kate have paid tribute to a pizza seller who died from cancer, with the moving letter being read out at his funeral.

Peter Morris, 47, died in May, just months after Kate was diagnosed with the disease.

He met the royal couple last April when Kate and William purchased dozens of pizzas from his converted van during an engagement in Wales.

After hearing the tragic news, Prince William wrote a letter to Peter’s widow, Tracey, expressing their sympathies and recalling their first meeting. The moving letter was read at Peter’s funeral.

“We can only begin to imagine what an immense hole he will leave in your life and my heart goes out to you and your family,” William wrote. “Catherine and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Pete.

“We know that Pete was a hugely dedicated and highly valued member of the community which has been evident from the response to his passing.

"I did want you to know just how much you and your family are in our thoughts at this time.”

Kate and William met Peter last April, when they purchased £127.50 on 12 pizzas from his converted VW van.

They then handed out the slices to Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team members on a visit to Dowlais Rugby Club, Merthyr Tydfil.

Four months after the engagement, Peter's doctors found cancer in his adrenal gland and liver.

Tracey, 40, said William’s letter came “as a massive surprise” and is something her family will treasure.

“I don’t even know how they found out Pete had died,” she told The Sun. “It may have hit a chord with them because Kate is going through treatment

“He said how down to earth they were. We had so many letters from people who loved Pete but the one from William and Kate was very special.”

William’s letter will be framed for Pete’s daughters aged eight and five.

In March, the Princess revealed that she had been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer and is undergoing preventative chemotherapy.

She gave an update in June, ahead of her attendance at Trooping the Colour, where she said she continues to be treated for cancer.

But Kate assured the public that she’s “making good progress” and is “starting to do a little work from home”.

A month later she attended the men’s singles final at Wimbledon with her daughter Princess Charlotte, nine, and sister Pippa Matthews.
