Drivers are cautioned to remain calm if a wasp enters their car, as panicking could result in a £2,500 fine and penalty points on their license.

With warmer weather, more drivers hit the road, but wasp colonies also become more active, increasing the chances of encountering an unwelcome passenger.

An expert has issued a piece of crucial advice for all the drivers hitting the road.

While it may seem improbable, wasp numbers rise significantly in the summer months, adding an extra hazard for drivers who may become distracted by insects entering their vehicles, especially on high-speed roads and motorways.

For those who fear bugs, flies, and other insects, the sudden appearance of one inside the car can be startling and potentially cause erratic driving behaviour.

Driving while distracted by a wasp or other insect can result in up to 9 penalty points and a £2,500 fine for careless driving in severe cases.

If the distraction leads to an accident causing injury, the penalties could be even more severe.

The experts from Motor Match added: “Even to people who don’t mind wasps, the sudden appearance of one could be quite alarming.

“When in the enclosed space of a car, it's understandable that they could prove to be a distraction to the driver.”

“Nevertheless, it's crucial that we stay as calm as possible and don’t let wasps or other insects distract us from driving safely”

Experts added that maintaining a clean and tidy car, free from food and drink containers as these are what usually attracts wasps into a car.

“If you encounter a wasp flying around your vehicle whilst driving, remember to remain calm. The calmer you are, the less likely the wasp is to sting you.

“Be sure to wind down your windows to give the wasp an opportunity to escape. Keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.”
