If you wanted to conjure the image of an idyllic coastal resort, you wouldn’t go far wrong with magical Tenby.

Tenby is an iconic harbour town and resort in the southwest Wales area of Pembrokeshire.

It is famous for its simply beautiful rows of candy coloured houses overlooking a pretty harbour that wouldn’t look out of place in Italy.

The little resort is also known for its 13th-century town walls whilst the ruins of Tenby Castle overlook the coastline which is famous for powdery white sandy beaches and glimmering azure waters. And in addition to taking in the scenery, there is also plenty for visitors to do.

Exhibits at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery include a 16th-century wrought-iron cannon and The Tudor Merchant’s House recreates domestic life in 1500, with a merchant's shop and working kitchen.

Fbm holidays has the resort at number two on its list of the UK’s prettiest towns and villages, which it determined by analysing data including the number of Instagram hashtags for the location and the number of times it featured in articles featuring ‘UK's prettiest places’ and ‘UK's prettiest towns and villages’. The list also considered how many National Trust sites are nearby and how many Google images it has.

“We are thrilled that colourful seaside Tenby, with its 13th-century town walls and sandy beaches came in a close second, making it the prettiest town in Wales.”

It topped the charts as it had the most overall awards, is set within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and it boasts three Blue Flag Tenby beaches.

Visitors to the area often wax lyrical about it on travel review websites such as Tripadvisor, with people giving their views of one of its most famous features Castle Beach.

One said: “A treasure...

“Beyond beautiful on a sunny day. Tenby was a total gem to come upon. Beautiful place and beaches, lovely place to stroll, have a coffee and just relax.”

Another agreed. They said: “Wow, what an incredibly beautiful place…we will be back!

“The views are fantastic, a lovely family friendly day out - can’t wait for next time.”

But not everyone agrees that the beach is without its faults.

One said: “Tenby is full of dogs. They are everywhere and taking over.

“On Castle Beach, there is a sign when entering the beach saying ‘no dogs’. We counted 32 within 25 metres of the flag.”

They added: “Tenby is a lovely place but it is losing its way."
