BBC Breakfast collapses into chaos as set falls apart around gobsmacked reporter

BBC Breakfast was almost derailed during a live segment as the set for a new sitcom based on a 70s classic began to fall apart around reporter Jane McGovern

BBC Breakfast descended into hilarious disarray when a set started to crumble around a reporter, prompting an alarmed reaction.

Correspondent Jane McGovern was on location to interview the cast of a new stage adaptation of the classic 70s sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, while presenters Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell were anchoring from the studio. The beloved series, which chronicled the calamitous life of the hapless Frank Spencer, is being revived as a theatrical comedy.

Now, over half a century since the original aired, actor Sam Denia is stepping into Frank's shoes, eager to give Jane a sneak peek at the set. However, it was a crew member who ended up giving her the tour and that's when things took a comical turn.

"He's done a lot of work, as you can see, on the house. Everything is as solid as a rock," he boasted, only to accidentally knock several banister railings loose. "Sorry, sorry about that," he quickly apologised, as Jane couldn't help but let out a startled yelp followed by laughter.

The mishaps continued as a cupboard door came off in her hands, prompting Jane to jest: "Completely reliable!", and then a chair offered to her turned out to be missing a leg. She was humorously cautioned: "You might want to sit down here, but not on that chair either!" reports the Mirror.

It was all a playful nod to Frank's notoriously shoddy DIY skills, with the crew member quipping: "When you've got a house built by Frank, with his DIY skills, there's lots that can go wrong. And it does!"

In the studio, Sarah couldn't help but quip: "You just know Michael Crawford did all his own stunts, and in the 70s perhaps health and safety wasn't quite what it is now!" The legendary series may have only lasted for 22 episodes, yet it swiftly became an enduring British classic.

Meanwhile, Sally Nugent's absence from the show has been causing a stir after she vanished some weeks ago, with Sarah stepping into her shoes on the iconic red sofa. Viewers, concerned about Sally's future on the programme, flooded X with queries.

Sally was seen anchoring BBC News at One back in June, fuelling speculation that she might be branching out. Desperate for answers, one user pleaded on social media: "Has Sally left Breakfast?" while another pressed Jon Kay: "Most excellent but does this disrupt my early morning viewing when I expect to see you and @sallynugent on the sofa?"

At the time, Jon reassured fans that Sally was not departing, and the new lunchtime news slot would feature familiar faces like Ben Brown, Nina Warhurst, Tina Daheley, and Anna Foster instead.

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
