Richard and Judy reflect on wardrobe blunder at award show

Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan may be best remembered as the king and queen of daytime TV, but many fans will recall their embarrassing National Television Awards incident even 24 years later.

The TV legends took to the NTAs stage in 2000 to collect an award for their hosting duties on This Morning, but hilarity ensued when Judy’s dress came undone and exposed her bra.

Adding to the mortifying moment, neither Judy nor Richard were aware of the wardrobe malfunction, despite the raucous reaction from the crowd.

To make it even more awkward, Richard mistakenly thought the crowd wanted him to do his Ali G impression.

Thankfully, former This Morning presenter John Leslie put the pair out of their misery when he ran on stage and helped Judy cover up her chest.

The duo have relived the malfunction in a new documentary, Our Best Bits – In Our Own Words, which aired on Channel 5 on Sunday night.

Richard, 68, says: “I was blissfully unaware, until John Leslie stood up, and we thought, ‘What is he doing'. He raced up the steps, I thought 'What is he playing at', he reached out for Judy and hoisted her dress up.

“As we had come up [on stage] quite a few people had shouted at me, 'Do your Ali G', I thought that's what they were saying, and I was like 'No, I'm not doing it'. It was nothing to do with that, it was all about your dress, but we didn't know.”

Judy, 76, added that she “didn’t notice” her halter neck dress had fallen down because she was wearing a coat over it.

The couple's children Jack, 38, and Chloe, 36, also appear in the documentary. Reacting to the famous scene, Jack said: “I just remember turning around in slow motion towards the telly, and there is mum with her bra out.”

Chloe echoed: “She basically just had her boobs out.”

Personal trainer Chloe, who shares daughter Bodhi with ex James Haskell, previously reflected on the incident saying it gave her an insight into life in the spotlight.

She told The Sun: “My older brother was like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, no’, obviously having a complete meltdown.

“I thought, ‘Thank God for John’, as obviously we knew him as a family. Then I saw her and she was laughing and I was like, ‘OK, she’s fine’. All I cared about was her.”

Chloe said she called Judy as soon as she left the stage. She revealed: “She revealed: “And she was like, ‘Oh, it’s fine. It’s funny. Thank God I was wearing a bra. Imagine if I hadn’t been’.”
