An incredible 3,365-mile road trip that takes 60 hours from start to finish takes you through 12 states in the United States of America. The US Route 20, often referred to as the “longest route in America”, runs from Boston, Massachusetts in the east to Newport, Oregon in the west.

The US Route 20 was established in 1926 as part of the original US Highway System. Route 20 traverses several major cities (Boston, Cleveland, Chicago) and numerous small towns across 12 states.

For much of its journey between these large cities, Route 20 remains a quiet, two-lane road.

Embarking on this road trip allows you to experience a diverse cross-section of America, from bustling urban centres to serene rural areas and iconic national parks like Yellowstone.

The road journey kicks off from the coastal city of Newport, Oregon. Known for its marine life and aquariums, one can spot the best of both at the popular Yaquina Bay. Pay a visit to the area’s iconic lighthouse followed by a scrumptious seafood meal before heading off to the next spot.

The next state on the journey east is Idaho, passing through downtown Boise at the base of the Rocky Mountain Foothills. Stop at Craters of the Moon to see unique landscapes made of old lava fields. Then, visit the Idaho Potato Museum for tours, exhibits, and "Free Taters for Out of Staters!"

The Route 20 stretch through Montana is only 10 miles long, but it's enough to mark off another state.

In Wyoming, you will find Yellowstone National Park, the world's first national park, spanning three states.

The park features geysers, hot springs, alpine rivers, and lush forests, along with wildlife like bison, moose, elk, grey wolves, and grizzly and black bears.

Yellowstone provides plenty of information on how to safely and respectfully share the park with these animals.

Shortly after arriving in Nebraska, you might spot Carhenge, a replica of Stonehenge made from old cars. Built in 1987 by engineer Jim Reinders as a memorial to his father after working in England, it has become a popular spot for locals and visitors to view celestial events.

In Illinois, Route 20 takes you along the Mississippi River and past Chicago's South Side. Stop to enjoy famous hot dogs, deep-dish pizza, and the vibrant atmosphere of the Windy City, or keep driving to enter the industrial landscape of Indiana.

In Ohio, visit Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to see Elvis Presley's car, David Bowie’s costumes, Jimi Hendrix's drawings, and Lady Gaga's meat dress.

Then head to Cedar Point amusement park, known as the roller coaster capital of the world, located on an island in Lake Erie.

As you stay by Lake Erie, the fourth-largest of the Great Lakes, you will cross into Pennsylvania and explore the rural upstate landscapes of the eastern states. New York is just ahead, where Albany County offers a charming mix of Romanesque revival, Art Deco, and modern architecture to explore.

From there, head toward the final stop at Massachusetts and take a bow for covering the long route that took you through the scenic views.
