As far as beautiful city breaks go, Florence is up there as one of the most popular among global travellers.

Not only is it the capital of the Tuscany region in central Italy but also one of the most walkable spots on the world map, according to new data.

A recent list revealed that the quintessentially romantic destination earned the top spot due to its five main attractions all being located within half a mile of each other.

Financial website Insider Monkey earlier this year released its ranking of the globe's most pedestrian-friendly cities based on data from Tourlane and WalkScore, plus a consideration of the air quality and crime indexes.

Described as “a city that offers Renaissance history and timeless architecture with each step”, the ranking suggested that Florence's walkability seeps through its historic centre which is home to its most famous landmarks.

The entire historic centre of the city is a designated UNESCO site, housing fascinating attractions; the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Piazza del Duomo, and Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

All are within 0.5 miles of each other, making it possible to wander through the quaint, winding passageways in a mere 10 minutes.

Florence was actually the first city in Europe to pave all its streets, back in 1339 and remains the perfect European destination to explore on foot. From tiny villages and roads that meander away from the city to the many hidden nooks and crannies, there’s so much to discover without the need for public transport.

There’s no shortage of guided routes to take either, with plenty of top-rated walking tours as shared by TripAdvisor. Some even include food and wine.

The travel website recommended the Florence Sunset Walking Tour with Food and Wine tasting - a three to four hour excursion that explores the city’s rich heritage; both culinary and cultural.

Reviews described it as a “wonderful touring, eating, drinking adventure”.

One person praised its riverside route, alongside the Arno River which swoops its way into Florence from the sky-high Apennine mountain range.

For those more focused on culture and history, the Florence in a Day tour is well reviewed by tourists as “a wonderful way to see some key sites in Florence” with “a wealth of information” from willing guides as you explore.

As for hidden gems, Piazza della Passera is a less crowded square that rivals its cousins like Piazza Signoria. Loved for its “very genuine local atmosphere”, as described by Love From Tuscany, it’s the perfect pitstop.

For the best view, the terrace on top of La Rinascente department store boasts a lookout over the city’s rooftops and the Duomo and serves light refreshments including coffee. Alternatively, visit the Santarosa gardens in the Oltrarno and enjoy a comfortable meal or cocktail outdoors.

Flight deals to Florence are easy to find via Skyscanner with Iberia, Vueling, or British Airways. October is by far the cheapest month to visit with prices starting at £48 from London direct to Florence.
