KEY POINTS

  • The Wells Fargo Attune℠ Card earns an unlimited 4% in cash rewards in unique categories, like purchases at hobby shops and garden supply stores.
  • The card can fill in gaps in your credit card lineup, especially for recreational purchases that don't earn more than 2% on other cards.
  • Wells Fargo appears to be selective about who it approves for the card.

In the past, hobbyists have been best served by credit cards that dish out more rewards on online shopping or at retail stores. Cards like the Prime Visa and the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card have been stellar choices, as they earn extra for online shopping. Even a 2% credit card like the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card (see rates and fees) is a good catch-all card for non-categorized purchases like gardening, camping, and crafting supplies.

But recently, Wells Fargo released a rewards credit card with massive earnings potential for hobbyists -- the Wells Fargo Attune℠ Card. If earning 4% in cash rewards on your favorite hobby sounds good to you, here's what this card has to offer.

Earns 4% back on almost 50 sub-categories

The Wells Fargo Attune℠ Card is an excellent no fee credit card that rewards you for purchases that impact your well-being, your pets, and the world around you. In essence, it earns an unlimited 4% cash rewards on three main categories: Self-Care; Select Sports, Recreation, and Entertainment; and Impactful Purchases.

These three categories break out into 48 subcategories, such as craft shops, game shops, florists, sewing shops, photographic supply stores, and book stores. The card isn't designed just for hobbyists, but hobbies make up a large portion of its subcategories. Let me repeat: No other rewards credit card will earn an unlimited 4% cash rewards quite like this one. While some might earn bonus rewards at specific retailers, like a store credit card, very few will do so at so many stores all in one.

Better yet, the rewards you earn can be redeemed for cash rewards, like statement credits. This differs from many store credit cards, which typically limit your use of rewards to the retailer where you earned them. For example, the Michaels Credit Card earns 9% back at Michaels Stores, but you have to use rewards at Michaels. You can't redeem your rewards for cash deposits or statement credits.

The only downside might be the approval process. It appears Wells Fargo is being very selective initially with who it approves. Based on what I've seen on social media, those who were approved had good credit and hadn't opened new credit card accounts within the last six months. Likewise, those who were denied had recently opened at least one new credit card. While there isn't any specific information on who will and won't be approved for this card, it might be prudent to review Wells Fargo's credit card requirements before applying.

Since I have opened new cards this year, I'm going to let some time pass before I try. It would fill some gaps in my credit card lineup -- like earning 4% cash rewards at bookstores and secondhand shops -- but I'll be patient and give it some time before I let Wells Fargo run a hard inquiry on my credit.
