The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card is good for regular Delta flyers who can take full advantage of the card's many perks, especially the lounge access and elite status boost. It also helps if you at least occasionally fly with a companion, as the annual companion pass is one of the key ways of recouping the cost of the annual fee.

Amex Delta SkyMiles Reserve review

Is the Amex Delta SkyMiles Reserve worth it?

This is a great travel rewards card if you can say yes to at least most of the following:

  • You fly Delta multiple times a year
  • You fly round-trip with a companion at least once a year
  • You prefer to purchase first-class tickets
  • You value Delta Sky Club and/or Amex Centurion Lounge access
  • You check bags when you fly
  • You visit a Resy restaurant at least once a month
  • You use a rideshare at least once a month

If this isn't you…well, then you need to do some math before you take flight with this airline card.

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card is expensive ($650 a year, see rates and fees). If you can't get back at least that much in value -- but ideally more -- then I'd suggest checking out a cheaper Delta card.

Author's note

This card is on my One Day list, since I'd like to get back to traveling enough to make it worthwhile (and the airplane metal one is just neat!). I prefer to fly first class domestically (when I can), and the companion pass has real appeal. Plus, I've always had a pleasant layover in Delta lounges, so that access has value to me. If I flew Delta just a little more often, this card would be in my wallet.

What everyone else is saying

We're not the only ones who like this card. Take a look at what other folks are saying about the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card.

What other review sites say

Average review site rating: 4.0 / 5.0 stars

We took a look at reviews from our top seven competitors, and boy were they mixed! A few give it high markings for its potentially valuable benefits, while others question its appeal to broader audiences.

Many of our competitors rightfully called out the very high annual fee. And several mentioned the upcoming restrictions on lounge access as potentially devaluing the card.

That said, everyone still lauded lounge access as a prime perk with a lot of value for Delta regulars. We also agreed across the board that the annual companion pass was a huge part of the card's appeal that could cover the card's annual fee if redeemed on a high-value route.

Online consensus

As with the more official reviewers, social media is full of folks both for and against the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card. It's quickly clear that the people who see the most value in the card are exactly who the card is meant to tempt: regular Delta flyers.

Folks on the "Why?!" side talk about the same cons we found: a high annual fee and very low rewards rates. On the other side, defenders simply counter with, "That's not the point." They cite the perks, like the companion pass and lounge access, as more valuable than a higher earning rate.

The one thing that has the loyalists fired up? Upcoming negative changes to the Sky Club lounge access perk. I happen to agree here, and I highlighted those changes below under "What could be improved."

Amex Delta SkyMiles Reserve features and benefits

Take the stress out of layovers with Sky Club and Centurion Lounge access

Once you're used to having airport lounge access, it's hard to go back. Cardholders of the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card can get access to several lounge networks:

  • Access to Delta Sky Club lounges when flying on a same-day Delta-operated or Delta-marketed flight. (Exclude basic economy tickets.)
  • Access to The Centurion Lounge locations when flying on a same-day Delta-operated or Delta-marketed flight. (Flight must be booked using an eligible Amex card.)
  • Access to Escape Lounges when flying on a same-day Delta-operated or Delta-marketed flight. (Flight must be booked using an eligible Amex card.)
  • Terms apply

Cardholders also get four one-time guest passes for the Delta Sky Club each year. After that, you'll need to pay for guests at all lounges (terms apply).

Starting Feb. 1, 2025, Sky Club access will be limited to 15 visits per year unless you meet spending requirements. Read more on the changes below under "What could be improved."

Fly a companion roundtrip for pennies with the companion pass

This is arguably where the biggest value of the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card lies: Cardholders get an annual companion certificate good for a buy-one-get-one round-trip Delta cash fare (terms apply).

The certificate is good all the way up to domestic first class -- and that's pretty much where the best value lies. For example, roundtrip from Boston to Seattle in the Main cabin only runs around $400, while first class would be over $1,100.

If you and a companion already pay for round-trip first-class tickets each year, then this is an easy win.

A competitive welcome bonus can boost your SkyMiles balance quickly

New cardholders can earn 60,000 bonus miles after they spend $5,000 in the first 6 months.

Although Delta SkyMiles can be hard to maximize for top value, the welcome bonus could go a long way toward domestic main cabin flights.

Keep in mind that the welcome bonus for Amex cards can vary quite a bit (even more than most welcome bonuses). So always do a bit of research before you apply for a new Amex card to ensure you're getting the best welcome offer possible.

Receive up to $360 a year in Resy and rideshare statement credits

In true Amex style, this card has a couple of statement credits you can earn on purchases from partners. Specifically, cardholders can earn:

  • Up to $20 a month ($240 a year) in statement credit for U.S. Resy restaurants (you don't need to book through the app, the restaurant just needs to appear on it).
  • Up to $10 a month ($120 a year) in statement credit for select U.S. rideshare purchases (no, food delivery won't count).
  • Terms apply; enrollment may be required

If you're already making these purchases, then that's an easy $360 a year that makes this card significantly more affordable.

However, these are use-them-or-lose-them credits that expire at the end of each month, which may make them harder to maximize. These perks are likely best suited for folks who live in larger cities with more options for using the credit organically.

Earn MQDs with your card to jet your way to Medallion elite status

Before the recent Medallion program overhaul, you had to buy (and fly) a lot of Delta flights to get status. Now, Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card holders can get status through card purchases alone -- and they don't have to start from $0, either.

First, you'll get a $2,500 MQD Headstart each year. This gets you halfway to Silver Medallion status, the first tier.

Then, you can earn $1 MQD per $10 in purchases on your card. This means you'll need $25,000 in eligible card purchases to get the rest of the way to Silver status. Terms apply.

What could be improved

The $650 annual fee is a huge chunk of change

Let's address the elephant-sized fee in the room: The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card costs $650 a year (see rates and fees). This is not a small annual fee.

I have several cards with comparable fees, and I can tell you from experience it always makes me wince when it hits. I get value from them, or I wouldn't keep them, but it's still a really big number.

Before you apply (and even after you have the card), make sure you're doing the math on how much value you're going to realistically get out of it. And note I said "realistically" -- this card is too expensive to open it out of some idealized notion of how much value it could offer.

Sky Club lounge access is getting nerfed in 2025

I touched on this above, but it's worth its own section because it could definitely change the game for some cardholders. Starting Feb. 1, 2025, there will be a 15-visit cap on cardholder access to the Sky Club lounges.

The only way around the new rules is to spend at least $75,000 on your Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card within the calendar year. After you reach the cap, you can choose to visit the lounges for $50 a pop. There won't be anymore guest passes, and you can't use your 15-visit allotment to bring a guest.

While this is probably plenty of visits for average flyers, folks who use Delta frequently -- i.e., the card's most ardent users -- are definitely not pleased about these developments. It could be a gamechanger for some cardholders.

The miles you earn on purchases are pretty unimpressive

Other than the annual fee, this is probably the most obvious drawback to this card. You'll earn:

  • 3X Delta SkyMiles per $1 on Delta purchases
  • 1X Delta SkyMile per $1 on other purchases
  • Terms apply

That's it. That's all you earn. There are no other bonus purchase categories, not even the nearly ubiquitous restaurants and dining category.

If you're looking to maximize your purchases on, well, pretty much anything, this isn't the card for you. This isn't even the best card for maximizing Delta purchases! (That would arguably be The Platinum Card® from American Express.)

  • Foreign transaction fee: None
  • See rates and fees

Credit limit

Your credit limit is based on several factors, including your income and credit profile.

Should you apply for the Amex Delta SkyMiles Reserve?

This card is designed for people who fly Delta regularly, at least a few times a year. It will be difficult to recoup the annual fee otherwise.

Folks who don't fly Delta often enough to justify this card can check out the less expensive Delta cobranded cards. Or compare other cards to find an even better fit.
