4 Reasons to Make Your Next Big Electronics Purchase at Costco

KEY POINTS

  • Costco doubles the extended warranty on most electronics from one year to two.
  • Free tech support is invaluable for those of us who are not especially tech savvy.
  • With a 90-day return window on electronics, you can buy with confidence.

When I was a kid, my parents purchased two major electronics: A huge, boxy television that I thought was gorgeous and a stereo that my mom referred to as "the hi-fi." So sophisticated.

Fast-forward to today. You can't walk into a room of our home without running into electronics, from televisions and white noise devices in the bedrooms to desktop computers, laptops, and iPads scattered throughout the house. Quite simply, we've grown to depend on the best electronic equipment we can find.

Here are four reasons we check out Costco any time we're looking to purchase new electronics.

1. Free tech support

Despite the ridiculous number of electronic items in our home, I have never been described as "technically gifted." In fact, one of the best things about buying electronics at Costco is the free tech support offered with each purchase. Whether I'm trying to figure out our new television setup or having a problem with my laptop, I have a professional I can call on to patiently walk me through the process.

Speaking of tech support, I was impressed by how helpful Costco employees were when we purchased a new television a few months ago. While the first employee we spoke with was incredibly nice, he was also honest enough to tell us that he wasn't the best person to ask. He found someone else to help us, a guy with what appeared to be encyclopedic knowledge of all things television.

In the months since that purchase, we've come to realize how lucky we were to have his advice, because the television was both simple to set up and exactly what we were looking for.

2. Free extended warranty

Typically, when I purchase electronics from another retailer, it comes with a one-year manufacturer's warranty. When I buy electronics from Costco (excluding touchscreen tablets), I receive a second-year warranty at no additional cost.

That's an especially good deal because electronics are expensive. While I always hope that a new purchase will last for years and years, Costco's extended warranty guarantees me at least 24 months.

3. 90-day return window

Say I get a new laptop computer, and after a month of trying to get used to it, I finally admit to myself that I can't stand anything about it. Looking out for my personal finances, I sought out reviews before buying it. The reviews were great, and I got the laptop on sale, but it's just not for me.

As long as I'm still within the 90-day return window, I'm not stressed because I know I can return it to Costco without a hassle of any kind. If you're going to shell out good money for an electronics item you need, you want the assurance that you're not going to get stuck with something you don't like.

4. Costco offers some pretty great deals

While Costco is generally known for its low prices, the retail giant really kicks it into overdrive by offering deep discounts during its electronics sales. For example, just in time for students returning to school, Costco is offering $300 off the HP 16" Pavilion Plus laptop with Windows 11 and $120 off a 10.9-inch, 64GB iPad Air.

As with any purchase, it pays to shop around. After all, it's about finding the best product while also protecting your household budget. Don't be surprised, though, if you find that Costco offers the lowest price and highest level of support on the electronics you need.
