Autobiographical novels of best American poet and playwright Maya Angelou, originally Marguerite Johnson include I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1970).

Maya Angelou, a memoirist and actress, importantly figured in the civil rights movement. In 2001, Ladies Home Journal named her among the thirty most powerful women. Maya Angelou started her series of six with her magnum opus and nominee for a national book award. People nominated Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'fore I Die , her volume in 1971, for the Pulitzer Prize.
