I really liked the theme of this book based on 'the lost generation' or children in England that were orphans or living rough were sent to the colonies to better their lives but sometimes, as in Colin's case were mistreated.
The story interests me because that age, the world is seen through the eyes of a fourteen year old kid. I was fascinated by the courage Colin had in which he explores the unknown with his friend. I also like how this story is very realistic with Colins drunkard adoptive dad and also Colins older friend from the war , who is very interesting. I like how this child sees the world and can immediately identify some of the wrong things happening while the adults just seem to turn a blind eye to it including the so called good people like the father in the church. Overall this book is good but I didn't enjoy some of the creepy parts where Colin's adoptive mum is behaving like a supernatural ghost or a spirit and when the father in the church thinks Colin is affected by the devil. Some of the parts have r18 content which i didn't get as this book is supposed to be young adult fiction. This book is written by Bernard Beckett, a New Zealander
