Seven Deadly Demons #1

The Demon Court

Rate this book
He is temptation, but she will not be tempted.

As a child, Selene was left at the foot of the White Tower—given to the sorceresses who train those with magic. Her life has been spent honing her powers. But she can't fully join their ranks until she fulfills a single, impossible task. Bring the Demon King, Lust, to his knees.

Lust has ruled his kingdom for centuries. He is the reason his people live without remorse and indulge in their senses. Life is mundane and boring…until he runs into a dark haired enchantress with eyes the color of the night sky.

With one whispered sentence, she changes everything.

"I'm the beginning of something new."

Suddenly, the weight of centuries consumes him. He tries to use his powers of lust to sway her. He can bend the emotion, manipulate it, use that lust to control anyone he wants. But she's a blank slate. He can't feel anything inside her mind but ice and defiance.

All it took was one sentence to get into his castle, even less to capture his attention. And suddenly, the weakest of the sorceresses finds herself in a game of wits she has to control.

A game of deceiving a demon king while desperately trying not to fall in love with a creature who cannot feel anything but lust.

“And if, for a second, you do not feel worshiped, then you will tell me. I’ll prostrate myself onto the floor and let you step on my throat.”

"He’d cuddled with her. Lust. The demon king she’d been raised to fear more than anyone else in any of the seven kingdoms had wrapped her in his arms and cradled her until she fell asleep."

bueno y ahora a esperar a ver que otro hermano cae completamente a los pies de una minita LETS GOOO

"Where did you go, little moon?"
"Somewhere you cannot follow."
"There is no such place. I will shatter this realm if I lose you."
"Don't put this on me."
Selene shook her head, slowly rotating back and forth against him. "Don't make me the reason this kingdom falls."
"It's already at your feet."

I had a good time with this but became kinda bored with it towards the end even though the last 15% was what you'd call a rollercoaster of emotions, albeit a pretty rushed one.
I'll definitely give Emma Hamm another chance in the future, she's got potential to become a favorite.

I tried to go through this book without being too harsh with comments. It’s not necessarily bad, it’s kind of a cute idea, but it is confusing in places.

I don’t think it has the motives very well thought out. I have the feeling that it says at one point something, then all of a sudden they say somehow the opposite, but then again the first thing. It’s confusing to pinpoint a precise motive of the heroine, for example. I am not sure what to make of her.

I believe some behaviors of the MMC make no sense for his character (ex: screams in a pillow, rushes to clean his room before FMC arrives - weird for his character, he is a king…)

And to add more to the confusion - it’s the first time I am reading a book written in third person and I notice the jump from one character’s mind to another’s. So here we are in FMC’s mind, and all of a sudden it jumps in MMC’s mind, and it takes me a line or two to realize that, and I have to re-read sometimes. So that is a lot to work on.

I liked the idea. The execution though..

Beware: it is very dragged on. It didn’t need to be this long. The inner thoughts are so long and repeated.

I forgot how sappy Emma’s writing is and mixed with the spicy she’s added in? Makes me a happy girl. Emma Hamm writes fantasy so well. I always enjoy the world building and unique places she creates. Seriously, all the “worlds” are floating islands. So cool.

I know a lot of people are coming here for the spice because it’s not usually Emma’s thing and I think she does it very well. I’ve read a lot dirtier but her spice scenes really suit the book. It’s a mix of passion and dirty. We are talking about the embodiment of Lust here and he’s deliciously dirty.

A major pro for me is Lust in general. I LOVED his character. He’s practically pansexual. He has had and enjoys sex with men, women and any other way a person may identify. He appeals to everyone because again he’s the embodiment of Lust. He’s masculine and feminine, his clothes also embody that. Now Selene, I have a hate/love relationship with her. I absolutely adored the dynamic between her and Lust. I am a sucker for enemies to lovers and they’re definitely enemies. But, as their relationship furthers on I got quite annoyed of her constant back/forth internal struggle. I was like woman if you do not decide what to do and stick with it then I will lose my mind. You don’t see those type of things from Lust although he’s been alive for thousands of years so I’m not sure if that was intentional. He does have his faults though because he hasn’t experienced many other emotions so this book explores that.

Highly recommend if you’re dipping your toe into spicy fantasy romance. Even monster romance because he’s practically human but he has horns. Warms you up to the idea of monster romances.

“You are everything,” he whispered. “My beginning and my end. I thought I was living before I met you, and my darling, I was merely surviving. You walked into my life and set my entire world ablaze. How could I ever let you go?”

😭😭😭 Emma Hamm is so hecking talented. Her writing is so beautiful, so lovely to read. And then you add in the fact she wrote a novel about a Lust demon?? You’ve got absolutely beautiful smut.

I’m serious. This book was very smutty, but also… so freaking SWEET!! And while it was very hot, our mains didn’t make a home run until late in the book if ya know what I’m sayin’ 😏

🌿 TROPES & THEMES 🌿
✔️ Very hot slow burn
✔️ witches, demons, spirits
✔️ banter that’ll touch your heart and light your pants on fire
✔️ character growth that is so beautiful to watch
✔️ he has HORNS 👀
✔️ burn down the world for her kinda guy

I was so lucky to have received this arc!! I truly treasured this entire book. It’s an introduction to her next big series, and the first demon brother we follow us Lust.

Selene is a witch with complicated powers who has been trained her entire life to seduce Lust and bring him to his knees so her coven of witches aka adopted evil mom and sisters can take over his kingdom. her adopted mom basically sells her off to Lust and he’s aware and thinks they are just being silly.

Selene is able to block her feelings and emotions so this obviously fascinates Lust bc he cant influence her feelings like everyone else.

The banter, the chemistry, the beauty of this book is just *chef kiss* there’s smut… and then there’s beautiful, will bring a tear to your eyes smut that Emma is so talented at writing.

I’m so excited for the rest of this series!!! I cannot wait to see what happens with the rest of his brothers!!!

“Do with me as you will, sorceress. And I will be at your feet, thanking you for whatever you decide.”

*2.5 stars*

UGH this one is so hard for me to rate. There were some aspects of the story that I really liked but I really had to push myself to finish this as I thought it was way too long.

The set-up for this story is that we have the demon Lust, the embodiment of that deadly sin. He rules the kingdom where this story is set. Selene is a sorceress who can bury all emotion and thus is unaffected by Lust's power. She is sent to intrigue Lust so that the sorceresses can gain power in the kingdom.

The good: Lust and Selene had a really unique dynamic. Lust is a bisexual king who appeals to both men and women and wears corsets. Selene has a cold and unfeeling appearance which draws Lust in, as he has grown bored with affecting everyone with his powers. Over the course of the novel, their feelings develop and Lust starts to realize that what he has been missing is ~love~. Selene is dragged along for the ride as she is always denying her feelings. The character dynamics were the strongest part of this novel for me.

The bad: oof okay. Do you ever read something and you can see that the plot points are happening just to happen and it makes no sense WHY these things are occurring? Everything with the sorceresses just felt so one dimensional and it just felt like these things were happening but I really didn't get it. The overall plot of this book was just lost. It was way too long and just dragged because the story focused so much on Lust and Selene's dynamic without developing anything else. For me, that just made this reading experience a slog.

Overall, I do not think I will be continuing with this series.

Cute, but very slow. Not what I was expecting either. Lust was not very lust like and I think that was the point, he’s supposed to be tired of the same old same old. He’s bored after 1000 years of sex, so he has to have Ms. Prim and Proper who’s not interested in him at all and isn’t like ***other girls*** ⚰️⚰️⚰️. The spirit of affection was cute though 😊.

I also didn’t like that all of these books have demon in the name and these guys aren’t demons, they are spirits of emotion. Which is mentioned a billion times throughout the book, so there is a bit of mismarketing there.

My other big issue with this book is how Selene and Lust just kept talking and circling one another for a majority of the book. It drove me nuts. I kept almost yelling at my phone for them to just do something or each other already.

I like Hamm’s other work Whispers of the Deep wayyyy better. It’s more original and interesting. She has talent, but it just didn’t show through in this “demon” anthology.

This was very... okay. Not bad, not good. Just okay (and much longer than it needs to be)🤷🏻‍♀️

The characters were enjoyable albeit little hollow but the world intrigues me enough to ensure I read the next book when it comes out... Also reading from Lust's pov was kinda boring. Like yeah your dick is omnipresent in its hardness and you are horny all the time WE GET IT. Also also! This particular book was marketed as heavy unapologetic smut fest and it was really... not that. There was smut sure but it was very tame and very unispiring considering we have a demon like dude and a sorcereress involved (kudos for the shibari scene thou) 🤗

To conclude, I'm glad this didn't put me in a reading slump like her goblin king books did and that I'm officially back on the Emma Hamm track (and still waiting to be awed off my arse the faceless woman style) 💕

I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice : 🌶🌶🌶

What you can expect :
- Ennemies to lovers
- «  I was sent to kill you but… »
- Slow burn
- Lots of tension
- Great worldbuilding
- Demon / sorceress

Only Emma could write an adult spicy romantasy that turns out so cute. I love Emma’s writing and know this book would not disappoint and I’m glad I was right !!

In this book we get to meet Selene, a sorceress sent on a mission by her « mother » to destroy the demon king, Lust. It is the perfect « I was sent to kill you but end up loving you ». It is also an ennemies-to-lovers slow burn romance with lots and lots of tension between the two MC. I looooved the chemistry between these two and their character development was so nicely done. I enjoyed the fact that despite Lust’s power their relationship is not only driven by it but relies with trust above all.

The worldbuilding and the descriptions of the kingdom were great but I Hope to have more informations about all the kingdoms and the magic system in the next book. Despite that I found this story kind of unique.

I was sucked in the book and read it in one setting. Special mention to Affection who has my whole heart.

This book was provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review:

I've read a lot of the author's books - and this one definitely is in my top two or three favorites.

This story is different enough to keep my attention and was wonderfully 'new', but follows the time honored formulas of seemingly unrequited love, slow burn romance and some intrigue and magic thrown in for good measure.

I thought the two main characters Selene and Lust, were very personable and it was fun to read how they, and their relationship, grew throughout the book. I love how Lust personified the first (in this series) Cardinal Sin and am looking forward to reading how the author spins the remaining 6 Sins.

The author doesn't usually write a lot of um, 'steaminess', but this book is full of passion (after all, it is Lust) and she writes it so well. The love scenes are descriptive and sensual, without being over the top. I hope the next book(s) in the series are equally as passionate!!

Can't wait for the next book in this new series. Write fast, Emma!

It’s official. Emma Hamm could write anything and I would be on my knees begging for more. This book is the perfect blend of everything you could possibly want: stunning worlds, beautiful prose, adorable characters, fantastic banter, all of the sweetness and heart, and of course heaping helpings of “hi, can someone open a window please” spice.

Selene is an orphan who was taken in and raised by sorceresses. Only ever wanting to be a part of their family she leaps at the chance to earn her mother’s love by completing a sole mission: seduce the demon king Lust, unravel his secrets, and take back his kingdom for the sorceresses once and for all. However as Selene encounters Lust and spends time in his kingdom she soon discovers he is not what everyone assumes, and that she may be the one unraveled in the end. Lust, while being the embodiment of lust, finds himself both confused by and enamored with the sorceress who is impervious to his power, but the harder he tries to win her the more he finds she has won him entirely instead.

These two were absolutely *chefs kiss*. Lust was equal parts sunshine, seduction, and sass while Selene was made of steel, stoicism, and stubbornness. I loved how the dynamic played out between them and how the almost play on words was depicted throughout the story. The attention to detail was insane and wove everything together in this book perfectly from beginning to end.

Lust was absolutely nothing like I imagined but everything I never knew I needed in a character!! I am officially obsessed with him and could read a dozen books with him in it. Selene was so relatable and I loved that she was the tough one who needed to be won over but not won…she was strong on her own and I love that she never strayed from that in order to find love.

The scene stealer in this book was hands down Affection, the little spirit inhabiting Lust’s castle. As you can imagine the play on words here was pure perfection and I loved how they interacted with each other and ultimately how Affection played into the love story overall. As far as the love story itself goes, the spice was AMAZING but I loved that for being a book literally about Lust it wasn’t a smutfest. The exploration of Selene teaching Lust the value of trust while also being taught how to embrace her own feelings in order to trust, was truly the crowning glory in this book. It was seriously a beautiful read that had everything I wanted and more and I cannot WAIT for the next brother’s book because he too completely stole every page he appeared on!!

Thank you so much Emma for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. We asked for spice and you delivered and we own you eternally!!

Thank you so much for giving me an opportunity to read ARC earlier.

I have to say that it was a new style of Emma's writing. The world was set in a deliciously seductive around one of the seven deadly sins, Lust.

Lust was intrigued by a sorceress named Serene who has an ability to suppress Lust's powers whereas everyone around him greatly desire it. Serene was raised as a pawn in her mother's plan to bring down Lust and his kingdom to it's knees and wanted the throne to be ruled by the sorceress.

I loved how amazingly it was written of characters growth and passion. It was a character driven but has all the slow burn romance, magic, demons/ witches, spirits, banters. A love blossoming from two unloved persons and their life changes. I loved all the spicy scenes and kink rope play.

I can't wait to read all of other Six Deadly sins books

I cannot say how lucky I was to receive an ARC for the first book of this new series by Emma.

This could easily be one of my top three favorite books. It has everything you need and leaves you wanting more. The slow burn romance, enemies to lovers, a lovely twist of magic, amazing love story and the perfect amount of spice as the cherry on top.

It’s a refreshing take on demons and sorceresses and has so much character depth and growth that you are enthralled until the bitter end. I felt all the feels…I loved, I laughed, I cried, engrossed in every second of it. I DEVOURED this book in one day and already have plans for a reread.

I cannot wait for the next book and to dive back into the mystical world of the Seven Kingdoms!

DNF 20%. I don’t think Emma Hamm is for me. I think others who are looking for a fun, quick romantisy that don’t mind a lack of deep characters or plot (plot being a well-developed romance) may enjoy this. But this isn’t what I’m personally looking for at the moment. The authors writing style isn’t clicking with me and feels very juvenile despite the content. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the characters - the dialogue was very cliche and so were both of their personalities. Very much “she’s different than other girls”. The book is relatively short so the pacing is very quick which I think did the storyline a disservice and is why I’m ultimately dropping it. I need a bit more set-up and character development instead of this stale, flat story.

Emma Hamm introduces us to sin in her newest series, Seven Deadly Demons, a totally new twist on the Seven Deadly Sins. The series kicks off with Demon Court and what a marvelously unique story that was. Lust is up first and ready for action in the strangest battle of wills with one frosty mfc character. It was very entertaining.

When Selene is in her element she's powerful, calm, and confident but outside of it her self-confidence plummets and she hides from her emotions by burying them. Taken in by the sorceress as a baby but Selene doesn't get the love she craves, I hate to say it but she's a pawn piece and knows it but she still has hope that her family will love her. It's just so sad, it's easy to tell that Selene wants approval and is willing to do whatever her family wants to get it. I'm not even really sure if she believes the things they tell her, she just ignores anything that could paint them in a negative light until Lust. When Lust comes into the picture Selene starts to struggle with morality, loyalty, and her conscience, because she finally stops ignoring the signs. Selene changes for the better, continuing to challenge everything throughout the story.

Lust is just that, the spirit of Lust, he's not human and sees things differently than a mortal would. He almost had an innocent quality to him. He wants the best for his people and runs his kingdom well (in his opinion) but he doesn't quite understand humans enough (although he thinks he does). Lust didn't recognize things for what they were but he also changes throughout the book in very noticeable ways. I enjoyed seeing him figure things out or have little moments and him not realizing what they were. Both Selene and Lust were fighting their connection but somehow they manage to come together and it's so seamless I don't really know how it happened. I especially love the touch her and die moments.

Emma has created a very complex world that's mostly populated with humans but then sorceresses are thrown into the mix along with Lust and his brothers. No one really knows too much about either, including each other. Sorceress has some sort of innate magic while Lust and his brother are spirits/emotions made flesh, as I said they're the seven deadly sins but they aren't alone there are other spirits who haven't become flesh. Affection is one of them. There are unique characters that manage to work their way into my heart, I adored their upbeat, sassy, personality. As for the sorceress, from what I've seen, I don't like them as a whole. Their powers vary but they don't seem particularly strong when compared to spirits. I certainly don't trust them, the high priestess wants power and is willing to do anything to get it.

Lust and his brothers have taken kingdoms and the sorceress are peeved about it, each side trying to bring the other down, hence the cat and mouse game we follow throughout the book although at times it's hard to tell which one is the cat and which one's the mouse. The story is this back and forth between truth and lies, has hidden emotions and a great amount of misunderstanding or not understanding things. Selene has been feed lies and Lust doesn't understand humans, or himself, not really. So a lot of things happen while both Selene and Lust try to figure things out. When they do figure things out, they make for one lovely couple.

Demon Court was a little different from what Emma normally writes but different is a good thing. Emma puts a totally new twist on the Seven Deadly Sins. The story was very unique with its mythology, it had lush descriptions, distinct situations, and the characters bold. While it was a very sensual story there was also an emotional complexity layered throughout the book. Emma has really started to bring the emotional trauma lately, that ending really got me but I was saved by a HEA. I loved Demon Court and it's just the beginning of the Seven Deadly Demons series. One down, six more to go.

This is the start of @emmahammauthor
newest series covering the 7 deadly sins ~ 𝑆𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝐷𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑙𝑦 𝐷𝑒𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑠!😈

And Lust was the perfectly written character to play out this first sin! He was sexy, queer, dark and romantic! When he walks about his realm, all of his people fall at his feet with lust in their eyes and between their legs. 😂 (I really wanted to say betwixt there, I should have.)

Selene was raised since birth by sorceresses of the white tower to infiltrate Lust and bring him down. She is sassy, powerful and also super conflicted about her own self worth.

I loved the banter between these two, the enemies to lovers struggle, the super hot slow burn and the smutty scenes! The emotions, romance and trust finally shared, made for some really wonderful growth from both characters!

This book was so much fun!!! I'm excited to see how Emma writes the next deadly sin/demon!

⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 rounded up!

Holy Hot 🌶🌶🌶

Thank you, Emma, for giving me the chance to read this early!

This book is for those who are in love with Emma's writing style but want a little more spice 😉 actually let's just call it what it is. Smut. And this book had a LOT!

Lust and Selenes' relationship and dynamic is one you can not help but fall in love with. She was raised as a sorceress who wanted to please her family. Her task? Kill a demon. Easy, right? Not when that demon is literally walking Lust. This book follows their relationship as Selene begins to learn that maybe her family wasn't right after all.

This book is such an easy read. Perfect length. Not too complex but descriptive. The sass is there. The spice is there. It has everything you need and more. Highly recommend!

Love ya and don't forget to Glitter your horns 😘

So thankful to be a early bird reader (because lets be honest some places don't like when you write reviews that your a "you know reader" lol) but I was so thankful to get this book early. It came out of the blue, when she announced it to our group and I had to give it a go. I haven't found a story by her I didn't like so there's always that.

This book was everything different about demons and witches that i didn't realize i wanted until I started reading it.

It shouldn't be too hard to kill a demon right? Selene thinks that, is trained for that due to her powers and her foster mother gearing her up to help take over the demons castle. To have the sorcerers back on the throne and she would do it, do anything for the love that family had given her that her true family did not. Throughout this book you learn what is right, how to follow your heart and what certain situations will test a person, or in this case a demon. She made the demons differently, with feelings and thoughts and remembrance of destruction but now love and reverence through their kingdoms. Affection has to by my favorite rather then Lust himself.

Seeing the changes through the story and the moments were you don't know if you want to cry, scream or dance is what i always want from a book. Words that lead you to accept what happens and then be shocked when its not what it sounds like.

What an amazing read and a way to show that even authors can write different genres/ levels of intimacies!!

The first half of the book, I liked a lot. There is a lot of tension, some humour and such. Then it got quite spicy and less interesting for me (this is mainly because the plot was weaker and I have a pet peeve with all the previous men comparisons in spicy books). I actually enjoyed Lust a lot, Selene I do not know. She was a bit indecisive.

All in all, interesting start of the new series.

Bland mess. She’s no seductress even if that’s what the blurb says. She’s more a judgemental frigid witch, and he’s an immature lacklustre lust demon.

There’s so many plot holes I can’t keep track. He knows she’s out to seduce and replace him as king of the realm so why is he keeping her around? Her only tactic is seduction and over 50% of the way in she’s still uncomfortable with sex. Keeps saying “I could have him on his knees if I wanted” girl please a racy nightgown scares you. He’s lust personified but one person isn’t affected by him and he gives everything up? There’s just so many inconsistencies. I hate to be a hater but I haven’t struggled with a book in so long.

The premise is so good but the execution is terrible. 1 star. Sex is not the only thing women have of value or the only tool that they have to “keep a man” & if a whole book surrounds that notion it’s not a good book.

I was very excited to beta read this one as not only do I love Emma Hamm's work but this book also has S P I C E!

Set in a kingdom literally ruled by the embodiment of Lust, our main girl Selene is a sorceress raised with the mission to bring down the demon king (Lust) from the inside *wink*.
Meanwhile, Lust has ruled simply forever and is even getting kind of bored with town-wide orgies. He meets sassy Selene and is obviously instantly interested in her ability to resist him.
This book has brilliant character development and some very lovable side characters to boot. I laughed, I cried, and I read the whole thing in one sitting.

Spice rating for me is probably 3.5/5, but I think its the appropriate amount that adds to the story instead of becoming the focus. I can't wait to read more in this series.

I am unsure where Emma Hamm creates these complex characters with dynamic relationships, layered trauma/hurt, and progression from - but I need her to keep doing it.

The Demon Court really struck a cord with me - I almost feel like the FMC was written for me to cry and heal a bit through (isn't that the magic of reading, that reading words you've needed to hear your whole life can touch your soul?). We have an FMC that can be hard to relate to, because she shoves her feelings down down down - conceal don't feel Ice Queen; a MMC who gives playboy energy, but is a sexy golden retriever once someone gets to know him; and a lovable companion that gives me grown up Chip from Beauty & the Beast vibes.

10/10 recommend giving this a read, and if you have ever felt like you're alone on your island, like you've had to suck it up and be the strong one for everyone else, like you aren't lovable aside from what you can do for others - grab tissues.

3.5 / 5.0

This started out really good, the character dynamics were on point and the world building was clear and concise, but somewhere around 40% the slow-burn became a muddle of words that resolved, but it’s messy. I enjoyed the first half of the book and didn’t like the writing of the last part of it. I think too much of it was forced to happen and there was not great angst at the end, no devastating scene of love and triumph that eradicates the evil sorceress… it just fizzled.

The smut was on point, but the setup of the HEA was iffy and the preview of the next book was so rushed and brief, there was no real hook to continue.

I really like this author and might check her other series before I seek out the second in this one.

Until Next Time,
MC

3.5 ✨

This took me ages to complete because the first half way SO slow. I understand it was "enemies" to lovers, forced marriage and building up, but it felt so incredibly so. Once the second half of the book hit, the pacing was better and same with the tension. I found the first half closer to 2 stars and the second half closer to 5 stars. Hard balance of a book, but I'm willing to try the second
