Planning the perfect prom is one last “to do” on ultra-organized Charlotte Wu’s high school bucket list. So far, so good, if not for a decorating accident that sends Charlotte crash-landing off a ladder, face-first into her obnoxiously ripped archnemesis J. T. Renner. Worse? When Charlotte wakes up, she finds herself in an unfamiliar bed at thirty years old, with her bearded fiancé, Renner, by her side.

Either they’ve lost their minds or they’ve been drop-kicked into adulthood, forever trapped in the thirty-year-old bodies of their future selves. With each other as their only constant, Charlotte and Renner discover all that’s changed in the time they’ve missed. Charlotte also learns there’s more to Renner than irritating-jock charm, and that reaching the next milestone isn’t as important as what happens in between.

Navigating a series of adventures and a confounding new normal, Charlotte and Renner will do whatever it takes to find a way back to seventeen. But when―and if―they do, what then?

this was not quite what i was expecting...

i don’t have a lot to say actually so this will be quick.

first of all, i found the premise very interesting — two 17-year-old rivals that are seniors in high school waking up one day trapped in the thirty-year-old bodies of their future and discovering that they are engaged is for sure a cool concept. i was so excited to read it, especially because it had similar vibes to 13 Going On 30 and i love that movie so freaking much. but the problem is that the execution here was not the best, at least not for me. it just fell flat. i was expecting something more exciting and with more depth, and that’s not exactly what i got which was disappointing. but well, this is a young adult romance and almost all the books that i read with this genre didn’t have a lot of depth, so i can’t say i’m completely surprised.

although the main characters weren’t necessarily badly written, i didn’t really love them and it was difficult for me to connect with them. their romance was kind of sweet, but in general it was bland. i don’t think it was well-developed, it felt abrupt and some stuff were unrealistic in my opinion.

i wasn’t captivated by the characters and the story as a whole, and that’s the reason why i was bored for the majority of the book. last pages were not so boring thankfully, i liked it, but i wish it was less rushed and more detailed. i felt like some things deserved to be explained better, like for example the time travel aspect. the author didn’t give a proper explanation to that.

the message at the end was good and very much needed though, certainly my favorite thing about this book.

i do believe others might enjoy this more than me, so even though i personally didn’t have a great experience, i still highly recommend it. it’s not a terrible book by any means, i feel like it’s just not for me; mainly because of the fact that i’m not a person who usually reads YA — not the biggest fan of the trope, sadly — but if you are a fan, then you’ll probably enjoy Woke Up Like This more than i did.

✨17 Going on 30✨

Listen, the book was perfect. I don’t have much else to say. It delivered exactly what we were promised and a whole lot more. Waking up 13 years from prom engaged to your nemesis is actually such a bucket list item now??? Would I technically have to time travel back to 17 and then jump forward again? Shhhh.

There’s something about an Amy Lea book that feels so personal, and Woke Up Like This is THE example. It perfectly captures the nostalgia of 13 Going on 30, while creating a book that is incredibly unique yet entirely relatable. Char and J.T. gave incredible LJ and Peter K. vibes—literally the book references them! I love when I can tell an author is paying homage like that; it always makes the book feel more genuine. Woke Up Like This read like a love letter to romcoms.

Between Exes and O’s and Woke Up Like This, it’s safe to say that Amy Lea absolutely has my number. She’s an auto-read author for me and now she may be an auto-WATCH one as well??? I know it’s already been optioned, so I’m quite literally counting down the days until I can watch the movie version. Fingers and everything else crossed. I need it so fundamentally. In the mean time, I can’t wait for the audiobook <3

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

What would you do if you woke up engaged to your high school nemesis? Personally I wouldn’t want that 😂 but this was one was a win. The 13 going on 30 vibes were there and I loved every second of it!!! I seriously can’t count how many times I watched that movie and yes I taught myself to do the thriller dance based on the dancing with Jennifer Gardner 🤭🤭

Reading this book was like giving a hug to my 17 year old self 🫂🥹💕 I think this is a great read for someone at ANY age. When you graduate high school it’s such a big step to adulthood you’re still growing as a person and discovering who you are and what you actually like. You might lose friends, break up with the guy you thought was your forever or start a relationship with someone you never would have dated. At that age I was so insecure and unsure of myself I love looking at my growth as a woman and this book made me have to congratulate myself 💖

Tropes & What to Expect
💟 YA(normally not my fav but I really really enjoyed)
💟 Enemies to Lovers
💟 He falls first
💟 opposites attract
💟 Asian rep
💟 Single POV(I’ve gotten so spoiled with dual POV like I NEED to know the dude’s thoughts)

Charlotte is type A personality. She is 17 years old and has her shit together. She’s the type of girl that plans, achieves her goals and hates when things are out of order. JT Renner is the guy that everyone loves..he’s playful, kind and super sweet 🥹 I LOVED how he brings Char out of her shell and makes her have fun. He’s always looking out for her and has secretly been wanting her for years.. Some people are just meant to be and these two felt this way for me they’re perfect together.

The dirty dancing scene at prom 🥹🫠 oh my gahhhhhhh

Would I recommend? YES! It’s short and sweet I related to the story and feel a lot of people will no matter your age or where you are in life.

I had the BEST time reading this with Cara 💜 thank you so much love for hitting me up girl this won’t be our last BR. You are truly such a gem 🥹💕

This was an easy, fun read. Definitely very similar to 13 going on 30. However, this time 2 people go forward in time after an accident where they hit their heads.

It’s a nice book, but Charlotte, the main character was very immature for her age. She is a senior in high school in the book, but had the maturity of someone much younger. I think this book may have been written for an audience around 13-15 years old. If you are not into young adult type stories, this would not be the book for you.

There was a lot going on, a few life lessons thrown in, and it was still a fun read. I was torn between giving this a 3 and a 4, because of what I mentioned above. But I had to admit that even though it seemed to be written for a much younger audience, I still enjoyed it.

When it comes to tropes, I am never ashamed to admit one of my all-time faves is . . . .

I will never not read a book if I know there’s some sort of “Big” or “13 Going On 30” vibes. And the vibes here were vibulating when not only Charlotte wakes up and discovers she’s 30, but due to a kerplunking of noggins while decorating for the prom, her nemesis J. T. Renner has also come along on this strange trip.

I loved every single thing about this. If you have a youngster in your life who likes to read fun, light romances this would definitely be one I’d recommend as a Christmas gift. And if you’re an oldster who likes fun, light romances then it might be a winner for you too. This was my first time with both Amy Lea (I’m so excited I have an ARC of her upcoming release from Berkley) and Mindy Kaling’s book club. So far I’m a fan of both!

Woke Up Like This is such a fun and feel good YA romance. I had such a good time listening to it. I love the movie '13 Going on 30' so I was really looking forward to reading this.

Charlotte and JT are frenemies. Charlotte is a go getter and JT has ruined a lot of her senior year plans. When they are decorating for prom, something happens where they wake up together, 30, and engaged. This does a good job of the before the time jump and after. I loved both Charlotte and JT and Amy's writing is great as always. A sweet romance I highly recommend.

i started and finished this book today and want to scream because it was just DELIGHTFUL. i felt like i was wrapped in a warm hug of a 2000's romcom movie. i'm a huge fan of amy's adult romances and her YA debut lived up to all expectations and swooniness i expect from her books. i'm seriously so in love with char and renner

this book as been marketed as 'never have i ever' meets 13 going on 30 and that is literally exactly what it is in the most joyful, funny, heart warming, nostalgic way imagine being 17, trying to plan the ultimate, perfect prom as one last to-do on your high school bucket list, but one day you wake up in a strange room to discover you're go years old and in bed with your high-school-rival-somehow-turned-now-fiance???? you say high school rivals, i say SIGN ME UP

if you've ever heard me say i don't like time travel in romance books, please know that i'm a LIAR be so many books I absolutely ADORE involve time loops/travel (i.e., the do-over by lynn painter, see you yesterday by rachel lynn solomon, the seven year slip by ashley poston and now woke up like this by amy lea)

This book is something I would have read in middle school. It was a quick read but damn did the marketing team for this one on Amazon pull my leg. I feel deceived. It ended up being infinitely more YA than I expected. If you’re a fan of YA, teeny bopper, Jenny Han books… you’ll enjoy this. Otherwise, this is going to be a rough read for you with a lot of internal screaming.

Woke Up Like This is a memory lane of my high school years. Not a memory that I am fond of but it certainly memorable one. Miss Lea done a great job portraying Charlotte as a ambitious, controlling and determined young woman. Somehow I see a bit of myself on Charlotte.

I love the moral messages that being convey in this book. Again, Miss Lea done a great job narrating her story and with a help of Charlotte, this book is certainly enjoyable read.

Overall a great story.

So fun and such a cozy, cute quick read! Perfect for fans of 13 Going on 30 and time travel (which is slowly becoming a favorite trope of mine).

It had all the nostalgic high school feelings, and I absolutely loved the female main character. She gave off strong Virgo vibes 😂 Renner was precious and the friend circle seemed so realistic with all its flaws. The banter was adorable too and the inner dialogue was fun to follow.

I listened to the audio and think I found one of my new favorite narrators. Amazing job Natalie Naudus 👏🏼

Shockingly we both agree and give it 3.5⭐
Genre ~ Young Adult
Setting ~ not sure what state they're in
Publication date ~ October 1, 2023
Page Count ~ 273 (40 chapters)
Audio length ~ 8 hours 25 minutes
Narrator ~ Natalie Naudus
POV ~ single 1st
Featuring ~ high school, time travel, enemies to lovers, no steamage

This is the story told by (Char)lotte in the last week of high school leading up to prom. She and rival, J.T. Renner, took a tumble and woke up 13 years later when they're 30 and engaged, which is quite shocking to them both.

My thoughts:
I read this as someone who went to high school many, many, many (I could add a lot more many's, but you get the gist) years ago and who currently has a high schooler. I found it to be typical of a high school experience from what my old brain can recall. I don't remember being overly obsessed with prom, like these students were, but it certainly is an experience to remember.
I can totally relate to when her mom was talking about growing apart from her bff. Haven’t seen mine since my Gma’s funeral in 2019 and we rarely text anymore, but it is what it is when one moves away and life goes on.

Anyway, it's really no surprise where the story is going to take us, but the journey gave us some cute moments and some sad ones, too. I wouldn't have minded a couple of chapters from Renner's POV. I think it'd be cool to get a glimpse into the future, but it's probably just best to live each day to the fullest because you never know what'll happen.

I don't read YA much anymore, especially if there's romance involved, but luckily this only had kissing, so it didn't make it uncomfortable reading it with my child. There were a few swear words, but not used excessively.

My daughters in depth thoughts:
Kind of predictable. It was okay.

Side note ~ so we read this separately since we only have one copy. I caught her flipping back the pages looking for something and it turns out she was looking back for the same information that I had looked for when I read that particular part. How crazy is that? Maybe that means we'll be best friends forever!

Narration notes:
I did not listen to this one, but am just giving the info above for reference.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️➼i'm a mess, but i'm the mess that you wanted
.
it’s 17 going on 30.

okay…on the one hand, i loved this. i read it so fast. i think i had like 2 status updates because i was constantly reading today.

on the other hand, the constant pop-culture references got a little overwhelming. i think things like that really date a book. i love timeless books, and this isn’t that, but it’s still fun.

i thought charlotte had pretty good character development, although she could be pretty immature and annoying at times (but so can all teenagers). renner is amazing and i love him. their rivals-to-lovers relationship panned out really well, and the timeline was great. it was a good slow-burn story!

i thought it was pretty unrealistic that nori believed charlotte when she told her about time traveling, but that doesn’t really matter, considering this whole book is unrealistic.

and the second-hand embarrassment was pretty bad at the beginning.

i also thought the sex references were unnecessary for a YA book, considering i’m in high school and know people aren’t quite that obsessed with sex. (it wasn’t anywhere as bad as ‘check & mate’ if you need a reference)

however, the life lessons taught in this book are incredible, and it’s a great reminder to live in the moment and to live life to its fullest. adults don’t always have everything together, either. it’s just a really amazing coming-of-age story, and it handles topics like high school relationships and growing up so well.

i love 13 going on 30, and i really think this book did it justice. i was totally here for the vibes. overall, i enjoyed it a lot, and i’ll definitely read it again. i would totally recommend it if you’re looking for a fun romcom to read.

This was such a delight! I absolutely loved this premise. This story is basically the high school version of 13 Going on 30 and it made for such a fun rom-com read. This might be a YA book, and I’m sure teens will love it, but I’m equally confident that readers who were teens when 13 Going on 30 came out will enjoy it just as much. I got the exact same feelings from reading this book and I did from watching that movie for the first time. It’s all about living in the moment and not spending too much time worrying about the future or looking back on the past.
The romance in this was so good! I always enjoy an academic rivals to lovers story and Charlotte and Renner’s relationship fit this trope so well. Their banter was entertaining and I really enjoyed getting to know more about their history as the story went on.
I also really liked that friendship was a big focus in this. Charlotte goes on a long journey (from 2024 to 2037 and back) and learns a lot about herself and the kind of friends she deserves to have in her life. It was so nice seeing her eventually stick up for herself and open up honest communication with a certain problematic friend.
I’ve really enjoyed Amy Lea’s adult romances and I’m so happy that I liked her YA debut just as much!
Thank you so much to the author and publisher for providing me with an early copy in exchange for an honest review!

Incredibly heavy-handed, yet outrageously shallow

Mediocre overall. Cute, sure, but not long enough to have ANY depth. So what does it have instead? Every reference you might need to feel exactly how the author wants you to feel. The MMC is a "Noah Centineo type," the other, very minor male love interest is a "Cole Sprouse type," the main female friend is a "Blake Lively type," her boyfriend is a "Michael B. Jordan type."

The story is incredibly referential. It's not content to let you feel "To All the Boys..." vibes, it reminds you the Asian FMC and charming MMC are dead ringers. It's not content to let you feel "13 Going on 30" vibes, it directly references it. The one reference it never makes is "Never Have I Ever" but if you've seen that adorable Netflix show, you can definitely skip this.

Worst of all is that some of the characters have real moments that could have been expanded. The adorable premise could have been so much better if it were expanded. I even had moments where I was like "well I'm going to hate this character" but then you barely saw that character and it didn't matter.

Zero depth, no original content, it could have been so cute but it fell way short for me. In fact, it did itself a major disservice by referencing all the way better material it steals from.

I siup 4/5, bo bardzo bardzo mi się podobała! Jest zdecydowanie warta przeczytania, jeśli szukacie lekkiej, słodkiej i wciągającej historii 💜

•enemies to lovers
•podróż w czasie

„Jasne, może i widziałam naszą potencjalną przyszłość. Może wiem dokładnie, jak sie potoczy. A jednak tutaj, teraz, jestem obecna. Nie bedę młodsza, niż jestem teraz. I choć nie zdołam kontrolować tego, co się wydarzy ani kogo stracę w życiu, to wiem, że mogę cieszyć się tym tu i teraz. I chcę żyć tą chwilą.”

Co zrobić, by znów wrócić do 2024 roku? I jeszcze raz - DLACZEGO Z KIMŚ, KOGO NIENAWIDZICIE?

12+, więc dla najmłodszych, sięgajcie śmiało! Gwarantuje naprawdę dobrze spędzony czas ❤️

A 17-going-on-30 YA romance! There's so much nostalgia in this book. While it’s not a new concept, it was still fresh with new ideas and takes on things. The bickering and banter was chef kiss! I honestly did not expect to enjoy this so much.

If "13 going on 30" had a modernized remake, this would be it.

Charlotte Wu and her arch-nemesis, Renner get plunged 13 years into the future, when they're both thirty - and engaged to each other. Definitely not their ideal situation. But being in the future comes with its own perks, and both of them get the chance to get a rare glimpse into what their and their loves ones' lives will be like around a decade later (while bickering and coming to the realization that adult life isn't all that it's made out to be).

An enemies-to-lovers trope rom-com is one of my favorites and this one delivers almost everything it should. There is humor, actual arguments, sweet life lessons, romantic confessions - all that makes it a delightful YA romance read. I read this almost in one sitting, and found myself wishing it had been longer at the end.

While the book seems to have been written for the YA crowd, I feel like an adult will find this to be a lovely read as well, and might just take them back to what it all felt like, having that innocent high-school love.

NIE TAK MIAŁO BYĆ - Amy Lea

[współpraca reklamowa @wydawnictwoyoung ]

4,25/5 ☆
