See Right Through

Devin Salvo has always remained three steps ahead: in chess, on the pitch, and in his love life. His every desire is within arm's reach, except the one person Devin has always wished would be his in the end. All it takes is one conversation to open his eyes to a new possibility, one moment to change what Devin believes about friendship and love and one person to change the rules of the game.

Sam Marshall has been fighting his feelings for his friend and roommate for two years. When an opportunity presents itself, he makes his move, only to be faced with the very real fear that what he sees in Devin, the potential waiting to be realized, may be more than their friendship can handle.

I read. I write. I talk too much and don't blog nearly as much as I should. And my muse consists of several voices in my head with a moody ringleader. Don't be scared of the voices. They mean well (most of the time).

I write romance, erotic romance, fantasy, mainstream fiction and the rare spiritual fiction.

How I rate books:

5 stars - Loved. With a passion. These are books I probably stayed up all night to finish. They made me cry, laugh, stop breathing or a combination of the three.

4 stars - Liked a great deal, but something (maybe something small) kept me from giving it another star. Still amazing books.

3 stars - Some of these I like well enough, but don't love. Some I have mixed feelings about, but don't want to give 2 stars.

2 stars - I tried to like it. I may have forced myself to finish it. Major issues with plot, characters, editing or all of the above kept me from rating higher.

1 star - I'm trying to stay away from giving these out, but these are for books I felt wasted my time and/or money. There may be a few I didn't finish, but those are rare. Mostly these are books that not only didn't resonate with me, but I hated them after a certain point for multiple reasons.

Unrated - I wrote it.

Or, the book was unusual in some way (characters or plot). I don't want to give it a low star rating because the writing wasn't bad, it just didn't appeal to my particular tastes.

Michael, Sam and Devin are roommates and best friends. Dev wants Michael, but Michael is straight. Michael feels strongly that Dev and Sam would be good together, but Dev vehemently disagrees. Sam quietly likes Devin even though Dev treats him like shit. Dev doesn’t care for their attractive neighbor and rugby teammate, Lee, because even though he doesn’t want Sam and can’t have Michael, he doesn’t want Lee to either.

Oh, the drama!

I knew that Sam would get his man in the end, and it was fun spending time with the guys while they’re playing rugby or chess, and during their long, soul-searching discussions while still managing to evade their feelings for each other.

As much as I enjoyed this story, I’m still not convinced Sam and Dev belong together and I don’t really have a desire to spend more time with these characters, except maybe Lee.

Michael is straight and he has two gay best friends. And of course both Dev and Sammy are crushing on him.

Michael thinks that Dev and Sammy are perfect for each other, so he decides to help them to see it, too.
Truth is a funny thing. I requires perspective.

The problem is with this story that it is soooo boring. Endless conversations heading nowhere, resulting in no development.

I love friends-to-lovers stories, but this one was so slow, I lost interest.

This novella gets an extra 1/2 a star for being free (yay!). Overall I enjoyed this one by I think Dev went from "I only see you as a friend" to "I love you" way too quickly for my taste. His obsession with Mike also was brushed aside rather easily, and the whole relationship between the three guys seemed a bit implausible. And what straight guy hangs out exclusively with gay men? The story rang a bit false to me but it was still surprisingly cute and pretty well written.

Wow dev seems like a real jerk. And can't say I'm a fan of the way he's bragging about how he likes to hook up with married men. Yeah home wrecking whore not an endearing character IMO. Especially when that's the first thing you learn about him. Besides he thinks of Sammy as garbage

Wow and then dev is all passive aggressive and power hungry. Abuses his power as coach to take his frustrations out on players. Especially Lee who is competition apparently.

That's great but why are we suppossed to like this douche? Or feel sorry for him that he's such a douche he has to try and make other people miserable?

Then he throws little hissy fits and pouts. For no reason. He's such a slutty dock and everyone goes out of their way to be nice to him.

And of course he doesn't like Sam but gets mad when someone else flirts with Sam. For no Other reason than he thinks Sam is a worthless bore so why should any attractive guy show interest in him? Dev Giant douche

Then Sam tells him he throws hissy fits. I like we used the same word. Then dev threw another hissy fit about how he doesn't get in a hissy.

Also pretty annoying how Sam pretty much just begs and begs for his attention. Only to not even get a second thought. Unless dev wants something.

I marked as unfinishable at 54%. The main character is just a bore. Now he sitting by himself brooding and pouring and this story is just repetitive. Nothing has happened but they having same conversations and thoughts over and over. I couldn't care less at what happens at this point. I see no connectiOn with these guys at all.

For some unknown reason Sam has loved slutty douche for years. Right, can't see that at all. And now slutty douches thoughts are 180 degree turn around from the beginning. Like everything he thought in the beginning wasn't true? I'm not sure this makes no sense and is just redundant.

Look Seriously some of you leaving shitty ratings and reviews need to take a chill pill and re-evaluate. For Starters if your going to give a low rating on a FREE BOOK that was a GIFT then you better be able to back it up, whining like a two yr old that the story just wasn't believable isn't going to cut it either. Again you come off as immature and many of us even wonder if your old enough to be reading this kind of story if ya get what I mean. The fact of the matter is you are not going to get chocolate drizzle and sprinkles on your free ice-cream so STFU!!!!

This one just wasn't at all believable to me. As Hannah said http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/..., I've never known ANYONE who talks about their feelings so much.

Not only that, but there was way too much back-and-forth here. I ended up losing interest in whether or not Sam and Devin ended up together by about the third "yes, I've been in love with him for years, but I'm scared, so I'm going to push him away... Wait! Kidding! Come back!"

I didn't believe these characters at all. A lot of discussion about feelings between three guys. Just didn't ring true to me -- guys don't talk like this. And Sam sure was a glutton for punishment with the repeated rejection from Dev who never showed me why he was all that important to fight for in the first place. I appreciate the effort but this story was just ok for me.

This is a rather short, well written story of unreciprocated love and I really wanted to love it but somehow just could not feel a connection to the characters – though I liked Michael, caring for his friend’s happiness and his total honesty.

Dev was not a likeable character to me….using his insecurities and blowing hot and cold on Sammy’s emotions and feelings….it felt a bit unreal and unbelievable some of the things that happened with them and in fact most of the characters. I had a hard time seeing them in my feeling head….what they looked like.

The dialogue was fine but the story kept moving from one place to another that after a while I wasn’t sure what was going on. Perhaps if the story had been a bit longer, I might have become more involved.

Not saying I hated this book exactly but that I wanted to feel more emotional about these guys, and I never had that.

I did love the cover.

A nice little love story - what I liked especially: The characters talked to each other. You know those stories, where the whole drama comes from "THE BIG MISUNDERSTANDING"? The one, that could have been solved in two minutes of honest talk? This one is missing here.

The interaction and communication seemd very natural and realistic to me.

And it was a free read from Amazon :-)

2.25 stars Hmm... this wasn't bad per se... I just didn't really like anybody.

1) Their actions didn't fit to character. Dev even says at one point once Sam starts throwing himself at him that he's acting totally different, and that's how I felt. Sam had been too shy to even flirt for two years, and all of a sudden he decides to unabashedly throw himself at Dev? Didn't seem realistic. And then Dev actually wants to have maybe a grown-up relationship and not just jump right into bed and Sam freaks and doesn't even listen to him.

2) Along the same lines as #1, the way Dev feels at the end, doesn't mesh with what he said about Sam at the beginning. I get that you can be in denial about being into someone... but he just didn't seem to think much of Sam at all at first, I didn't even think they were really friends. It was just all over the place and waaaaaaaay too angsty.

3) The way it started with Dev shamelessly hitting on Mike really bothered me. A little harmless flirting is one thing, but to flat out hit on your straight friend constantly is annoying. I find it hard to believe this has been going on since they were in 8th grade and Mike doesn't do more to dissuade it. It's rude and I found it pretty awkward overall.

4) I dunno, I just didn't really feel the connection. I heard it. A lot. Mostly via whining and pseudo-psycho analysis, but I just wasn't really feelin' these guys together (although I wanted to and obviously wanted them to end up together). Even though Dev was kind of a douche initially, it was him I ended up liking a little more. Sam was being very immature not answering Dev's calls and what-not. I get that he thought he was being brushed off and that sucks, but let the guy effen talk!

It began good, and then it all changed.

I don't like Devin, everyone was too easy on him, but I do agree with him that he doesn't deserve Sam and I'm not even talking about his past behavior, I'm just taking in consideration the way he treats Sam when the story begins, He wants to have Sam and Mike's support but he doesn't want to give anything back, He doesn't want to step up his game, too much work for him I think.

But then Sammy began acting like a little slut and my respect for him fell to the floor, one thing is acting brave and strong and make obvious for Devin that he wants him, and another entirely different thing is to throw himself at Devin's feet, the change of personality from the first part to the second was startling, it felt almost like two different characters.

More, when they are trying to talk Sam flirts and touch instead of listening to Devin, and Devin doesn't really say exactly what he's feeling, so free drama.

Oh God, it's that very fear that's never actually realized in most friends-to-lovers stories. Sam puts himself out there, taking that chance (that always pays off in the stories, right?) but it just freaks Devin out and upsets the whole balance of their worlds. It's crushing.

Overall, I caught a few gaps I just filled in for myself, but I spent half the book with my throat aching with Sam's devastation while facing that not really expected rejection. That, to me, spells success. It wasn't some kind of literary genius at work, it was simply the words put together in that way that gets the tension across. I felt the author had in mind that gut-deep reaction she wanted to express, and she did it.

This story is more of a promising first draft, as opposed to a well-crafted finished product. It needed an editor to sharpen the believability factor (it didn't make sense to see the rapidity with which Dev "discovered" his feelings for Sam, right after being talked out of his feelings for Mike), to make the characters more engaging (I had a hard time caring about any of them), to ensure that character behavior in one scene did not seemingly contradict the character's stated intentions from the prior scene, and to carry out line edits so that the dialogue was stronger. The story has good bones, though. It would be interesting to see a re-write.

Found it hard to finish this book. It is difficult to connect with a main character you dislike, and that was certainly the case with Dev. While I did enjoy the first half of the book, I found Sam's character changed too quickly from very shy to being so forward, this didn't seem realistic. I would like to read more from this author in future as I did enjoy her style of writing.

Love triangle

Devin has wanted Mike dined he discovered he was gay as a young teenager, but Mike says he’s straight. Sam wants Dev. Will Dev ever let go of his unrequited fantasies i oh d Mike and realize someone else loves him? Will Sam ever realize that he’s acting to Dev just like Devin’s acting to Mike?

Beautifully Written!

Sometimes Love sneaks into our lives without any fanfare, without any warning. It takes root in your life, waiting to be noticed. We never realize we're falling in love until we've already fallen. I loved every moment in this book! Every. Single. Moment.

Eh... there's an astonishing amount of nonsensical drama stuffed into these 80 pages, and most of it doesn't make much sense. I didn't feel any connection either to or between the characters. On the upside, I didn't have to spend overly much time with them, so... yay for that?

“I see right through to you. I see your every move. I know you now; I reach your mind. You've shown somehow, what I could find on the inside. There you will see, we're alike you and me.”~ Engelina

When someone is afraid of something, they will often overcompensate by acting the reverse of what they feel. This is certainly what Devin Salvo does in 'See Right Through'. Life proved to Devin early that being himself made him lose people in his life who were important to him. Therefore, when he realizes that Sam Marshal, his roommate and friend wants him, Devin is overwhelmed. He has a very serious decision to make, either keep acting like a shallow, promiscuous, jerk, keeping everyone at arm's length, or give up the mask and take a chance on never having to be lonely again.

I loved Sam. He watches and waits and is wise enough to know that until Devin comes to his senses about his feelings for his straight friend, Mike, there is no point in approaching him with the growing feelings Sam has for Devin. Sam sees right through him. When Sam finally makes his move, Devin hasn't yet conquered his demons, so he rejects Sam, thinking it's best so he doesn't hurt him. My heart was broken right along with Sam's and I felt his intense pain and longing. I wanted to slap Devin, yet, at the same time I felt sorry for him. I was beginning to see the quagmire of unresolved feelings and irrational fears in which he was stuck. He couldn't move for fear of it being in the wrong direction. In a way, he is protecting Sam as well as himself. It's just a shame that Sam gets caught up in Devin's whirling dervish but can't pull him out of it long enough for him to see things as they truly are. Devin is the only one who can do that for himself.

This short story had a powerful effect on me. There are so many emotions flying around that it was difficult to completely pin them down. There was a lot of puzzling things together in an attempt to understand the characters, particularly Devin, who was fighting the internal battle of the century in an attempt to be authentic and get what he needed to be happy. This was quite a commendable task to have undertaken in a mere 23 pages. It's a reminder to us that sometimes what we need most is right under our noses. Thanks, Sara, for an intense story.

Wow, this was a fun read and the characters involved very, very interesting.

We have Devin and Michael who have been friends since kids, and are now roommates living in the same house along with their third friend Sam. Michael is the first person Dev came out to and after his family threw him out when he came out to them, Michael’s family became his. But Michael is straight and while he knows what Dev feels for him, there are some things that will never change. But Devin’s belief that one day Michael will see how good they could be together forces the latter to throw in the comment that maybe Devin’s been holding in unrealistic dreams and not seeing what’s in front of him for so long. And that is exactly how Dev’s world changes in the span of a heartbeat. The notion that he and Sammy would be good together has him reeling, but when Sam comes right out and makes his move with the most seductive way Dev could possibly think of, the fear that he might lose his best friend due to a failed relationship has him pushing Sam away and practically achieving what he so much fears; Sam feeling hurt from the rejection and moving away.

This little novella was quite fun and hilarious in its way. The main character goes from having complete control of every aspect of his life into losing it all in the span of days. Emotions going in a wild roller-coaster of highs and lows and every line of the text had tension hidden in between. I enjoyed the most the fact that Sam is on his way to become a psychologist yet he loses his bearing as if he was a teenager when love and rejection take over.

I admit that there was a great amount of drama there toward the end that somehow pulled me back and the end itself was a bit hasty and easy, but the result was that I loved this story, enjoyed it a lot and I’d recommend it for those who love friends-to-lovers romantic stories.
